Principle of Operation

A pressure relief valve is a throttling pressure controldevice that opens and closes to ensure the down-stream pressure does not rise above a predeterminedpressure. Fisher relief valves cannot be used as ASMEsafety relief valves. A backpressure regulator is adevice that controls and responds to changes in theupstream pressure. It functions the same as a reliefvalve in that it opens on increasing upstream pressure.

Relief Valve

As long as the inlet pressure is below the set pres-sure, the pilot control spring keeps the pilot valveplug closed. Inlet pressure passes through the pilotrestriction and registers as loading pressure on top ofthe main valve diaphragm and plug assembly. Forcefrom the main spring, in addition to pilot loadingpressure, provide downward loading pressure to keepthe main valve diaphragm and plug assembly tightlyshut off.

When the inlet pressure rises above the set pressure, the pressure on the pilot diaphragm overcomes thepilot control spring and opens the pilot valve plug. Thepilot then exhausts the loading pressure from the topof the main valve diaphragm and plug assembly. Thepilot continuously exhausts gas when the inlet pres-sure is above the set pressure. The inlet pressureunbalance overcomes the main spring force and opensthe diaphragm and plug assembly.

As the inlet pressure drops below the set pressure, thepilot control spring closes the pilot valve plug and theexhaust to atmosphere stops. Force from the mainspring, along with pilot loading pressure, pushes thediaphragm and plug assembly onto the knife edgedseat, producing tight shutoff.

Backpressure Regulator

As long as inlet pressure remains below setpoint, thepilot control spring keeps the pilot valve plug closed.Inlet pressure passes through the upper port aroundthe upper portion of the valve plug and then throughthe hollow passage in that valve plug. Force from themain spring, in addition to pilot loading pressure, provide downward loading pressure to keep the mainvalve diaphragm and plug assembly tightly shut off.

When inlet pressure rises above the set pressure, pressure on the pilot diaphragm overcomes the controlspring to close the upper port and stroke the valve plugto open the lower port. The pilot exhausts loadingpressure from the top of the main valve diaphragm.Inlet pressure unbalance overcomes the main springforce to open the diaphragm and plug assembly.

While the main valve is throttling, the upper port of thepilot stays closed. The pilot exhausts only when itrepositions the main valve. As inlet pressure dropsbelow setpoint, the pilot control spring overcomes thediaphragm force to stroke the valve plug down to closethe lower port and open the upper port. Force from the

main spring, along with pilot loading pressure, pushesthe diaphragm and plug assembly onto the knife edgedseat, producing tight shutoff.

Pilot Descriptions

The following pilot configurations are available for theType EZR relief valve or backpressure regulator.

Relief Valve

The Type EZR relief valve uses the Types 6358B,6358EB, and 6358EBH relief pilots. The pilot bleedsconstantly while the relief valve is in operation. The pilotdoes not bleed when inlet pressure is below setpressure. The pilot exhaust can be connected directly tothe main valve exhaust pipe if the pilot connection andthe exhaust pipe are designed to prevent significantbackpressure buildup during full-flow conditions.

The pilot restriction code is indicated by a letterstamped on the bottom of the pilot body: an H for theyellow, small-diameter, high gain restriction (standard);S for the red, medium diameter, medium gain

restriction; and L for the blue, large-diameter, low gainrestriction. The high gain restriction has the lowestbuildups and fastest speed of response.

Type 6358B—Set pressure range from 20 to 125 psig(1,4 to 8,6 bar) in two ranges. This pilot is availablewith a high, medium, or low gain restriction.

Type 6358EB—Set pressure range of 75 to 350 psig(5,2 to 24,1 bar) in three ranges. This pilot is availablewith a high or low gain restriction.

Type 6358EBH—Set pressure range of 250 to 600 psig(17,2 to 41,4 bar) in two ranges. This pilot is availablewith a high or low gain restriction.

Backpressure Regulator

The Type 6358 is a low bleed pilot, so it only exhaustswhile it is repositioning the main valve. There is noconstant bleed with this construction. This minimizes dirtbuildup in the pilot. The Type 6358 has a set pressurerange of 20 to 125 psig (1,4 to 8,6 bar) in two ranges. TheTypes 6358B, 6358EB, and 6358EBH pilots can be usedin backpressure applications. Pilot exhaust can be pipedinto the downstream system when no bleed is required.

Optional Travel Indicator

The travel indicator responds with the precisemovement of the diaphragm and plug assembly toshow actual valve position. A travel indicator can beused for in-line inspection and troubleshooting, remotestem positioning and alarming.

Optional Inlet Strainer

The stainless steel inlet strainer is designed with holessmaller than the cage slots to prevent pipeline debrisfrom becoming trapped in the main valve body. Oncetrapped in the body, the debris can clog the cage slotaffecting shutoff performance. Inlet strainers are

typically not used on relief valves because debris canclog the strainer, restricting the flow through the body.

Optional Pilot Supply Filter

The Type 252 pilot supply filter prevents pipeline debrisfrom entering the pilot; a primary cause of pilotclogging. The aluminum body is rated for 2150 psig(148 bar) and the stainless steel body for 2750 psig(190 bar). Both are available in standard or extendedlength with a pipe plug or a drain valve. When theupstream system is free of debris, the Type EZR maybe installed without a filter. Pilot supply filters are nottypically used on relief valves because debris can plugthe filter, hampering pilot operation.

main valve body or pilot. Also, make sure that alltubing and piping are clean and unobstructed.

When installing Type EZR trim in anexisting Fisher E-body, damage canresult if flow is not in the correct direc-tion. Look at the body web to confirmthat flow is in the correct direction—upthrough the center of the cage and downthrough the cage slots. Change theexisting flow arrow if necessary.

After assembly, check for shutoff andleakage to atmosphere.

2. A Type EZR relief valve or backpressure regulatormay be installed in any orientation, as long as flowthrough it matches the direction of the arrow on themain valve body.

3. Figure 1 shows the standard mounting position.Rotate the bonnet (key 2, figure 8) or the pilot(figures 15, 16, or 17) for other mounting positions.

4. An upstream control line is required and must beinstalled—as shown in figure 5 drawing—into the 1/4-inch NPT connection in the pilot body assembly(figure 16), if required. Do not make the upstreampipeline connection in or directly downstream of a

Installation

Personal injury, equipment damage, orleakage due to escaping gas or bursting ofpressure-containing parts may result if theType EZR is installed where its capabilitiescan be exceeded or where conditionsexceed any ratings of the adjacent pipingor connections. To avoid this, install aType EZR relief valve or backpressureregulator where:

• Service conditions are within unitcapabilities (including those in the Specifi-cations section).

• Service conditions are within applicablecodes, regulations, or standards.

Additionally, physical damage to the reliefvalve or backpressure regulator couldbreak the pilot off the main valve, causingpersonal injury and property damage dueto escaping gas. To avoid such injury ordamage, install the unit in a safe location.

1. Only personnel qualified through training andexperience should install, operate, and maintain a reliefvalve or backpressure regulator. Before installation, make sure that there is no damage to, or debris in the

turbulent area such as a swage, or elbow. A filter maybe installed in the control line upstream of the pilot toprovide clean operating gas. Inspect and clean thisfilter regularly to make sure it is not plugged, whichcan prevent proper pilot operation.

5. Apply a good grade of pipe compound to the malepipeline threads for a screwed body, or use suitableline gaskets for a flanged body. Use approved pipingprocedures when installing the regulator.

When used in relief valve service, theType EZR main valve and pilot bothexhaust gas. In hazardous or flammablegas service, personal injury, death, orproperty damage may occur due to fireor explosion of vented gas that hasaccumulated. To prevent such injury ordamage, provide piping or tubing to ventthe gas to a safe location. The exhaustpiping must be designed and installed toguard against excessive flow restriction. This piping must be protected againstcondensation or debris that could clog it.

For safety during shutdown, vent valvesare required immediately upstream anddownstream of the main valve on abackpressure or bypass installation.

6. If system operation during maintenance isrequired, install isolating and vent valves as needed.

7. If the vent assembly (key 16, figure 13, 14, or 16)remains in the pilot body (key 1, figure 13 or 15), thenit must be pointed down if possible or otherwiseprotected. If the exhaust is to be piped to the mainvalve exhaust or remotely vented, remove the ventassembly and install tubing or piping into the 1/4-inchNPT pilot exhaust connection. Protect the open end ofthe exhaust pipe by installing a screened vent cap.

8. The pilot spring case vent (key 16, figure 13, 14or 16) must be kept open to atmospheric pressure.Protect the vent assembly from icing, moisture, ordebris that may cause blockage, as required. Tochange the vent orientation, twist the vent assembly inthe spring case. To remotely vent the pilot spring case, remove the vent assembly and install tubing or pipinginto the 1/4-inch NPT spring case vent tapping.Protect the open end of the vent line by installing ascreened vent cap.

Startup and Shutdown

If pressure is introduced first to the mainvalve before the pilot, the main valve maygo wide-open and subject the downstreamsystem to full inlet pressure.

Note

The maximum inlet pressure for specificconstructions are given in tables 1, 2, and6 or 7. Use a pressure gauge to monitorinlet pressure during startup.

Relief Installation (Figure 4)

Startup1. Close vent valve (not shown).2. Slowly open block valve and hand valve, if

Shutdown1. Close block valve and hand valve, if installed.2. Slowly open vent valve (not shown).

Backpressure Installation (Figure 5)

Startup1. Close upstream and downstream vent valves

(not shown).2. Slowly open upstream block valve first and then

downstream, make sure the pilot exhaust is pointed inthe correct direction.

Shutdown1. Close upstream block valve first and then close

the downstream block valve.2. Open downstream and upstream vent valves

(not shown).

Pilot Adjustment (See figure 13 or 14)If set pressure adjustment is necessary, monitor relief(inlet) pressure with a gauge during the adjustmentprocedure. Remove the pilot closing cap (key 12) andloosen the locknut (key 11). Turn the adjusting screw(key 10) into the spring case to increase the set

pressure. Turn the adjusting screw out of the springcase to decrease the set pressure. When adjustment iscompleted, tighten the locknut to lock the adjustingscrew in position and replace the pilot closing cap.

MaintenanceRelief valve and backpressure regulator parts aresubject to normal wear and must be inspectedperiodically and replaced as necessary. Due to the careFisher takes in meeting all manufacturing requirements(heat treating, dimensional tolerances, etc.), use onlyreplacement parts manufactured or furnished by Fisher. Also when lubrication is required, use a good qualitylubricant and sparingly coat the recommended parts.

The frequency of inspection and replacement dependsupon the severity of service conditions and uponapplicable codes, government regulations, andcompany standards. Table 8 lists various regulatorproblems and possible solutions.

Avoid personal injury or damage toproperty from sudden release of pres-sure or uncontrolled gas or other pro-cess fluid. Before starting to disas-semble, carefully release all pressuresaccording to the appropriate shutdownprocedure. Use a gauge to monitor relief(inlet) pressure while releasing it.

Type EZR Main Valve Maintenance

Trim Parts

Instructions are given for complete disassembly andassembly. Key numbers are referenced in figures 8through 12 unless otherwise noted.

Avoid personal injury or damage toproperty from sudden release of pressureor uncontrolled gas or other processfluid. Before starting to disassemble, carefully release all pressures accordingto the shutdown procedure. Use gauges

to monitor inlet and outlet pressureswhile releasing these pressures.

Note

The regulator may remain in the pipelineduring maintenance procedures.

Disassembly

1. Shutdown, isolate, and depressurize the mainvalve and pilot.

2. Remove the cap screws (key 3). Lift up andremove the bonnet (key 2) from the body (key 1).

3. Remove the diaphragm and plug assembly (key 9)and bonnet O-ring (key 28).

4. Pull out the cage (key 7), O-ring (key 8), and inletstrainer or strainer shim (if strainer is not used) (key 23).

5. Clean parts and replace if necessary.

Converting a Fisher E-Body to Type EZR:

Remove all trim parts from the main valve and clean thebody interior. Then follow procedure in Assemblysection to convert a Fisher E-body to a Type EZR.

When installing a Type EZR trim packagemake sure flow is up through the centerof the cage and down through the cageslots. In some cases, correct flow path isachieved by removing the body from theline and turning it around. If this is done, change the flow arrow to indicate thecorrect direction. Damage may result ifflow is not in the correct direction. Afterassembly, check the regulator for shutoffand leakage to atmosphere.

Assembly

1. Install the inlet strainer or shim (key 23) into thebody (key 1).

Note

For installation in a vertical orientation, lubricant can be applied to the bottom ofthe inlet strainer or shim (key 23) to helphold parts in place while the cag assem-bly is installed.

2. Lightly lubricate and install the cage O-ring (key 8).

3. Apply lubricant lightly to all O-rings or the matingpart before installing them.

4. Install the cage (key 7) and lightly lubricate andinstall the bonnet O-ring (key 6).

Note

For the 6-inch, secure the cage (key 7) tothe restrictor plate (key 71) using the capscrews (key 126), using a torque of 10 to12 foot-pounds (14 to 16 N•m).

5. Lubricate the top and bottom of the outer edge(bead area) of the diaphragm and place diaphragm andplug assembly (key 9) on the cage (key 7).

6. If travel indicator was removed, lightly lubricate thetravel indicator assembly threads and screw it into the

bonnet (key 2). See Travel Indicator Assembly Mainte-nance for maintenance.

7. Install the bonnet (key 2) in proper orientation.

Make sure to use a Type EZR bonnet. TheType EZR bonnet is NOT interchangeablewith other Fisher E-body bonnets.Installing an improper bonnet can resultin stem assembly breakage and unitfailure. The bonnet can be identified bythe EZR markings on the top.

8. Lubricate cap screws (key 3) and secure the bonnet(key 2), using an even criss-cross pattern. It may benecessary to push down on the bonnet to start the capscrews. Tighten cap screws to the proper torque (seetable 9).

6358 Series Pilots

Key numbers are referenced in figure 12, 13, 14 and 15unless otherwise noted. Unless replacing or removingthe body assembly (key 1), the pilot may remain onthe pipe nipple (key 29, figure 15) during maintenance.

Avoid personal injury or damage toproperty from sudden release of pres-sure or uncontrolled gas or other pro-cess fluid. Before starting to disas-semble, carefully release all pressuresaccording to the shutdown procedure.Use gauges to monitor inlet, loading, and outlet pressures while releasingthese pressures.

Disassembly

1. If necessary to check the outlet end of the bodycavity and the seating surfaces for moisture or debris, remove the body plug (key 3) and body plug O-ring(key 13) from the body (key 1).

2. Remove the closing cap (key 12), loosen thelocknut (key 11), and back out the adjusting screw(key 10) until compression is removed from the controlspring (key 7).

3. Remove the machine screws (key 17) andseparate the spring case (key 2) from the bodyassembly. Remove the control spring seat (key 8), thecontrol spring (key 7), and, if used, the diaphragmlimiter (key 40).

4. Lift out the diaphragm assembly (key 5) and valveplug (key 4). Check the stem guide (key 9) andrestriction (key 20) for damage or plugging. TheType 6358 has a restriction plug, not a restriction.

5. If necessary to replace the diaphragm assembly, the valve plug (key 4), the valve spring (key 14), orthe stem O-ring (key 37), remove the connector cap(key 6) and connector cap O-ring or gasket (key 36)from the top of the diaphragm assembly.

Assembly

1. If removed, install the body plug O-ring (key 13)over the body plug (key 3), and install the body pluginto the body (key 1).

2. Install the stem guide (key 9), if removed, andmake sure to install the connector cap O-ring or gasket(key 36) between the body (key 1) and the stem guide.

Note

In step 3, if installing a different sizerestriction, be sure to remove the codeletter on the bottom of the pilot andindicate the new letter.

3. If the restriction or restriction plug (key 20) wasremoved, coat the threads with lubricant and install it.

4. If replacing the stem O-ring (key 37), sparinglyapply lubricant and install the O-ring over the valveplug (key 4).

5. If removed, install the valve plug (key 4) and valvespring (key 14) into the diaphragm assembly (key 5).Install a replacement connector cap O-ring or gasket(key 36) on the diaphragm assembly, and secure withthe connector cap (key 6).

6. Install the diaphragm assembly (key 5) and pushdown on it to see if the valve plug (key 4) movessmoothly. The diaphragm assembly should strokeapproximately 1/16-inch (2 mm) after the valve plugcontacts the port.

Note

In step 7, if installing a control spring of adifferent set pressure range, be sure toremove the set pressure range on thespring case and indicate the new range.

7. Stack the control spring (key 7), the control springseat (key 8), and, if used, the diaphragm limiter(key 40) onto the diaphragm assembly (key 5). Makesure to install the diaphragm limiter beveled side up.

8. Install the spring case (key 2) on the body (key 1)with the vent assembly (key 16) oriented to preventclogging or entrance of moisture. Install the machinescrews (key 17) and tighten in a crisscross pattern, using 5 to 7 foot-pounds (7 to 9 N•m) of torque.

9. Replace the closing cap gasket (key 19) ifnecessary, and install the closing cap (key 12). Whenall maintenance is complete, refer to the Startup andShutdown section to put the relief valve orbackpressure regulator into operation and adjust thepressure setting.
