    TUESDAY, 10:23AM. An old Chevy Pick Up rolls intoHaiku. The exhaust pipe is only fixed with one screw andthe oil track reveals a lot of the 300.000 miles on thespeedometer. On the tail-gate the gear piles up, waitingto hit the water. Micah Buzianis presses the horn andafter repeating this twice Nik Baker comes out of thedoor of his winter pad. After loading up another twoboards and four rigs the truck is on its way to Hookipa.

    The weather is supposed to be fine; a few clouds overthe bay seem to fade moving towards Haleakala a fewmiles away. While driving it becomes quite clear that thewind has increased during the last hour. Nik takes a lastsip from the coffee cup before they finally reach theirdestination. Hookipa Beach Park is already reachingmaximum capacity with the parking lot jam-packed, butMicah skilfully manoeuvres into some free space rightnext to the guys from Paia Connection. "Lookin goodare the last words before both of them fully concentrate

    on rigging the sails, sails from NORTH SAILS as well assails from other competing brands. Nik and Micahs taskis to compare the on the water performance of the newSUPERSTAR, INSTINCT, TRIPLE XXX to the correspon-ding sails from the competitors. Only a week ago the finalprototypes arrived from NORTH SAILS loft in Haiku.

    After a detailed briefing, Australian designer and ex worldcupper Kai Hopf handed over the sails to Nik and Micah.Due to the lack of waves they headed straight over toKanaha Beach Park to do the mandatory flat waterperformance check. Now that it seems a big swell hasfinally reached the North Shore its time to tear apartsome big waves at Hookipa.

    AT THE SAME TIME IN GRAN CANARIA... which isone of the toughest spots in Europe; nowhere else is thewind more merciless and the beaches harder to reachthan in Gran Canaria. Fast breaking waves, tough localsand of course the critical eye of the press is the dailyprogram. You have to give more than 100% if you wantto be at the top. And there is no time for a break: Daidaand Iballa Ruano Moreno, better known as the Moreno

    twins, are sitting together with the Jensen brothers, Vidarand Orjan in the Jensens apartment. They hack in theresults of todays tests in their computers. Hard work ismade even harder at Pozo, with winds consistently 30knots plus and the shore break reaching mast high, itsone of the best places in the world to test small sails and

    jumping qualities. The new VOODOO, INSTINCT andSUPERSTAR were on the test menu and everybodyknows how much Kai needs their feedback.

    Back to Hookipa... In the meantime Micah and Nik wereon the water more than an hour. As if planned they meeton the beach after a big set to exchange first impres-sions. Improvements in handling, a little more luff tensionfor higher wind, the new setup seems to work pretty wellaltogether. After changing the rigs again they go onshooting through the waves to compare their gear.Radical bottom turns, a back loop from Nik as high as askyscraper, a goiter and a few tricks in the direction ofthe shore. They shout words of encouragement to eachother while managing their way through the white water.

    Kai shows up around noon with foot-long sandwichesand some cokes from Subway. Kai is waiting for firstcomments while Nik and Micah start eating. They com-ment and discuss between tuna and chicken. Micah andNik describe exactly the advantages and disadvantagesof each concept and give constructive criticism to areasthat need improvement. Kai takes notes carefully. Straightafter leaving Hookipa Beach Park, Kai races back to thecomputer to figure out changes that need to be made onthe luff to increase the elasticity demanded by Micah andNik. A few days later the result is named: TRIAX.LUFF.On the same day an e-mail arrives at the loft. Sender:Daida Moreno, GC. Two days later 6 new prototypes areleaving the loft and the country straight to Pozo.

    2 WEEKS LATER IN WESTERN AUSTRALIA...Everybody from the NORTH SAILS team meets in Perthto test this years wave range prototypes for finalapproval. Margaret River, Geraldton and Gnaraloo arenoted in the road book. In addition Kai as a local showsspots that were almost unexplored by surfers. Neverbefore have the conditions been better "down under.

    Unbelievable breaks, deserted bays and action of thehighest level are documented by the pictures on the firstpages. A real paradise! Perfectly shaped sets, glitteringwhite caps: on a few days the point breaks are unbelie-vable, shaping unreal sets of waves, so clean and long,that even some team riders have to leave the water. Fullyexhausted they sit on the beach watching the scenewhile Kai is already approaching them with his notebookin hand.

    STORIES LIKE THIS MAKE OUR HISTORY. It is aboutobsessed windsurfers for who only this one thing counts they have been at the most important spots all over theworld to give all they have. Ma ny years ago we found thePros at these places who were responsible for thedecisive steps in our development. We hand mouldedthem into the NORTH SAILS International Research &Development Team, detected their strengths, supportedthem and let them do what they wanted to do: even morewindsurfing.     R-TYPE There was a time when windsurfing used tobe double the fun no, stop, we simply spent double thetime on the water! At that time it didnt matter very muchhow strong the wind was, just getting out with your fri-ends and having fun trying out new things was a blast nomatter what the wind was blowing. During the years weall got better, some even way better. This brought up theproblem that the conditions also had to get better: morewind, higher waves and more extreme moves.

    Soon it seemed that without planing windsurfing wasnothing and the amount of active days went down anddown until one day the racing scene was forced (by thereduced wind limit) to develop shorter and wider boards.

    These boards planed extremely easy and on top becamevery stable. The next step was to modify these boards sothat they could also be used by regular skilled guys. Thisis how the widebody-boards of today were generated.

    They are short and wide, plane extremely easily, get veryfast, are easy to turn and are stable on the water.

    FORMULA WARP Vice-world champion Micah Buzianisdeveloped a Formula dream machine together with ourdesigners and here it i s. The Formula-1 machine amongthe sails, derived directly from the World Cup. Followingthe new rules the design team fully concentrated on therelevant sizes necessary for winning; maximum low endpower to match the minimum wind limit, maximum speedon deep downwind courses and unbeatable upwind per-formance. Even completely overpowered the FORMULAWARP remains controllable due to 4 hollow BOX.BATTEN(2 out of Carbon!) and 4 cambers. An absolute specialistsail developed for high-end racer exclusively.

He found he could increase the twistingsection (top) of the sail and not affect the power section(bottom). This enabled him to create sails with improvedtwist, more power and more control.     OPTIMUM COMBINATION OF HANDLING AND

    POWER! There is one thing everyone wants: to planeeven earlier! Normally achieved with deeper profileswhich have a negative effect on handling, our designerssolved this problem 2 years ago. They changed thebatten distances, the angles and the positions, so that inthe manoeuvre-oriented sails the centre of effort could bemoved down while at the same time supporting the bigarea around the boom. This batten configuration we callthe CROSS.BATTEN.CONCEPT. You will immediatelynotice it through the X formed by the boom and thebatten enabling remarkably more power and superior

    control through a wide wind range.

    EASY BATTEN ROTATION IS A SNAP! Everyone knowsit: the harder the batten snaps during rotation, the moreuncomfortable the handling is. Therefore all our nocamsails come with the FLIP.ROTATING.SYSTEM, eliminatingthe hated snap during rotation. This was made possiblethrough our CONSTANT.DRIVE.CONCEPT which pre-profiles our sails. So our sails always show profile evenwithout wind pressure enabling the battens to freely rotate behind the mast.
