Next Weeks 2nd Collection: will be to Help Our Elders

In good times and bad, senior Catholic sisters, brothers,
and religious order priests have dedicated themselves to ser-
vice and acts of mercy. Today, they pray for an aching
world. Yet years of serving for little or no pay have left their
religious communities without enough retirement savings.
Your gift to the Retirement Fund for Religious next weekend
helps provide medications, nursing care, and other necessi-
ties. Please be generous.

A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE by Bud Ozar

Today’s gospel shows John the Bapst and par-
ents have similar vocaons. Like the Bapst, par-
ents are asked to make “rough ways smooth” and
to “prepare the way of the Lord” for their families.
This Advent ask: “Does my life hinder or help my
family to know Jesus?”

Pray: Lord, please help us to prepare not only for Christ-
mas celebrations, but also for your arrival in our hearts.
Amen.
Think: How does your family prepare for Christmas? How
can you help?
Act: If you get distracted or are tempted to talk during mass
in church or mass online, remain silent and focus on pre-
paring your heart for God.
Liturgy Notes
Today, on this Second Sunday of Advent, we
once again hear the predictable story of John the
Baptist. We again hear the resounding message :
“make straight the pathway”, “a voice crying
out in the desert to ‘prepare the way of the
Lord.’
As well as most of us being able to anticipate
what today’s message is, as the readings always
echo the same theme each weekend of Advent,
through all three cycles, we might still experience
a sense of excitement. After all, we are waiting,
anticipating something very big to happen in a
few weeks.
Typically sung in all major Christian denomina-
tions today, would be the great hymn “On Jor-
dan’s Bank the Baptists Cry”. Also, on a more con-
temporary line, the Monks at Westin Priory in VT
wrote a nice song depicting today’s Gospel,
“Locusts and Wild Honey”.
This will be sung this morning, also.
