Knights dominate the Vikings

Another robust all round team performance, again led by captain Jez Pestell, ensured the MK Knights ran out victors by 23-13.

Niall Strudwick sustained no serious injuries from a hor-rific crash in heat 5, though his bike did suffer serious damage.

The win means the MK Knights remain top of the league.

They now look forward to an away trip to Belle Vue on the April 28 and the visit of Kings Lynn on May 4 for the next home meeting.

The Milton Keynes Knights saw off a determined chal-lenge from The Coventry Vi-kings in a top of the table clash on Sunday.

Coventry used two riders from their National League team and looked to provide MK with their toughest chal-lenge of the season so far.

Milton Keynes drafted in Connor Mountain, from the Mildenhall Fen Tigers, to re-place the ill Rik Mullins.

The Knights provided four out of the six heat winners and picked up second or third in all but one race.

TOUGH SEASON: Dean Lewington admits injuries have been hard, but says the players haven’t been good enough.

Captain Dean Lewington ad-mitted MK Dons simply haven’t been good enough this season, as they missed out on a play-off spot for the second year in a row.

Lewington, who will make his 500th appearance for the club this Saturday against Rotherham, said some play-ers haven’t stepped up to the mark when times have been tough this season.

Defeat on Good Friday to Port Vale put the icing on what has turned out to be quite a sour cake this season as reach-ing the play-offs became math-ematically impossible.

Although injuries have been a key contributor to Dons’ lack-lustre season, the captain says responsibility must lie with the players.

He said: “This season has been a real struggle to be hon-est. There has been no real form to speak of at any time, and we’ve been a bit sporadic.

“We’ve clicked into gear a few times, but we haven’t re-ally got going.

“A few players know they’ve not been good enough.

“Everyone knows the inju-ry situation and losing Patrick (Bamford) was a big loss to us, but we’ve not been good enough.”

Looking ahead to his 500th appearance on Saturday though, Lewington admitted it was a statistic that caught him by surprise.

He said: “You don’t re-ally think about it in terms of number of games, sitting around counting them up.

“It feels like it has come about really quickly, and it feels like it came out of no-where.”

Swans ending the season in strong form

Newport Pagnell Town hit a purple patch over the Easter weekend, picking up four points from six.

It was a five-star per-formance on Saturday which ensured Town’s safety in the UCL Premier Division, as they ham-mered bottom club Stew-art & Lloyds Corby 5-0.

Goals that day came from manager Darren Lynch, Craig Ralph, Lewis Smith, Luca Seminero and James Gregory, who com-pleted the rout.

It wasn’t as comfortable on Easter Monday, but the 1-1 draw with AFC Kemp-ston made it three unbeat-en for the Swans.

Matt Brady gave New-port a second half lead, but Steph Kemoanga equalised with 17 minutes to go.

Newport’s final game of the season is at home to Wisbech on Saturday, kick off at 3pm.
