As an undrafted free agent, Oak- land Raiders running back Jalen Richard made quite the impres- sion during the preseason to make the team’s 53-man roster. In Week 1 of the 2016 season mid- way through the fourth quarter against the New Orleans Saints, Richard would make another grand impression for his “Wel- come to the NFL” moment. “The story couldn’t get any better,” Richard said. “To go through all the obstacles that I went through to make the 53- man team and my first game is in New Orleans? LSU fresh- man Jake Slaughter took that to a new level Saturday afternoon at Alex Box Stadium. He didn’t know about it until it was over. “I had no idea,” the freshman from Ouachita Christian in Monroe said after senior left-hander Jared Poche of Lutcher became the first LSU pitcher since 1979 to throw a no-hitter as the No. 3 Tigers defeat- ed Army, 6-0, in a seven-inning game in front of about 5,000 to sweep a doubleheader. The Tigers (2-0) won the first game, 9-0, also in a scheduled seven innings. “After we made the last out, I saw Cole running out there to the mound,” Slaughter said. “And I was like, ‘What’s he doing?’” Freeman ran in from second base after John McCarthy ground- ed out to third base for the third out. The last LSU pitcher to throw a no- hitter was Bobby Landry on March 14, 1979, for a 1-0 win over Southern Mississippi in a seven-inning game.
