Take a heritage walk around the former Tanglin Barracks. Be sure to visit Loewen by Dempsey Hill, which was home to the SAF Music and Drama company back in the 1970s. An established art company, its famous alumni include illustrious local celebrities such as Jack Neo, Dick Lee, Najip Ali and Gurmit Singh. Loewen by Dempsey Hill also occupies an area where the old military hospital used to stand, when Singapore was still a British colony in the 1800s.

In the 1850s, the British government bought over Mount Harriet and started construction for Tanglin Barracks. The first barracks were built in the area where Dempsey Hill and Loewen by Dempsey Hill are currently located. After Singapore’s independence, the Singapore government gained ownership of Tanglin Barracks.

Tanglin Barracks remained unused until the Ministry of Defence made the compound its headquarters in 1972. The property housed the Central Manpower Base, where 18-year-old boys starting their National Service reported to the military.
