TestDirector

1). What is meant by Test Lab in TestDirector?

Test lab is a part of TD where we can execute our test ondifferent cycles creating test tree for each one of them. We needto add test to these test trees from the tests, which are placedunder test plan in the project. Internally TD will refer to this testwhile running them in the test lab.

2). Can we map the Defects directly to the requirements(not thru the test cases) in the TestDirector?

I do believe the following method is the most likely to use in your

case.

Create your req. structure.

Create the test case structure and the test cases

Map the test cases to the app. req.

Run and report bugs from your test cases in the test lab module.

The database structure in TD is mapping Testcase todefects, only if you have created the bug from the app. Testcasemaybe you can update the mapping by using some code in thebug script module (from the customize project function), as fareas I know, its not possible to map defects directly to an req.

3). How do run reports from TestDirector. Does anyonehave good white paper or articles?

This is how you do it:

1. Open the TestDirector project.

2. Display the requirements module.

3.Chose report

4). Can we upload test cases from an excel sheet into

TestDirector?

Yes, You can do that. Go to addIn menu in TestDirector,find the Excel add in, and install it in you machine.Now open excel, you can find the new menu option export to

TestDirector . rest of the procedure is self explanatory

5). Can we export the files from TestDirector to ExcelSheet? If yes then how?

Requirement tab -- Right click on main req/ click onexport/ save as word, excel or other template. This would save allthe child requirement.

Test plan tab-- only individual test can be exported. Noparent--child export is possible. Select a test script. Click on thedesign steps tab. right click anywhere on the open window. Clickon export and save as....

Test lab tab-- select a child group. Click on execution gridif it is not selected. right click anywhere . Default save option isexcel. but can be saved in doc and other formats. select 'all' or'selected' option.

Defects tab -- right click anywhere on the window, exportall or 'selected' defects and save excel sheet or document.

6). I use TestDirector 8.0 SP2 and I want to customize thereports generated. I understood that it is possible to useVB scripts with TestDirector. Can somebody give me anexample of a VB script used with TestDirector? Or another

solution to customize my report. I used the filters inTestDirector but I need a deeper customization.

This depends a lot of what you are interested in "reportingon". You have to combine both SQL and VB script to extract datafrom TD to Excel. To give an example on "general purpose" istherefore somewhat dificult.

Its also possible to "customize" the standard reportsgiven from the "analyze" tab, this is written in XML if you arefamiliar with this language.

If you log in to Mercury support you will be able to find a lot of

code examples.

7). How Many Types tab in TestDirector and explain it

There are 4 tabs available in TestDirector.

1. Requirement -> to track the customer requirenments

2.Testplan -> to design the testcases & to store the testscripts

3.Testlab -> to exectue the testsets & track the results

4.Defect -> to log a defect & to track the logged defects

8). How to map requirements with testcases inTestDirector?

1. In requirements TAB select coverage view.

2. Select requirement by clicking on Parent/Child or grand Child.

3. On right hand side (in Coverage View Window) another windowwill appear. It has two TABS (a) Tests Coverage (b) Details. TestCoverage TAB will be selected by default or you click it.

4.Click on Select Tests Button. A new window will appear on righthand side and you will see a list of all tests. You can select anytest case you want to map with you requirement.

9). How to use TestDirector in real time project

Once completed the preparing of the test cases.

1. Export the test cases in to TestDirector. (It will contain total 8steps).

2. The test cases will be loaded in the Test Plan module.

3. Once the execution is started, we move the test cases fromTest Plan tab to the Test Lab module.

4. In Test Lab, we execute the test cases and put as pass or failor incomplete. We generate the graphs in the test lab for daily

report and sent to the onsite (where ever you want to deliver).

5. If you got any defects and raise the defect in the defectmodule. When raising the defect ,attach the defect with thescreen shot.

10). Difference between WEBINSPECT-QAINSPECT andWINRUNNER/TESTDIRECTOR

Parent requirement is nothing but Title of the requirements itscovers hign level functions of the requirements.

Child requirement is nothing but sub - Title of the requirents itscovers low level functions of the requirement.

We can change the name of Tabs, as we like. TestDirectorenables us to rename the Tab . In TD there only 4 tabs areavailable.

13). How to generate the graphs in TestDirector

The generation of graphs in the TestDirector that to Test Labmodule is :

4.Select the graph type as Summary and click the Next button.

5.Select the show current tests and click the next button.

15). In Quality center, when you email a defect, the subject linefor the email is shown as the project name + defect ID. How canwe customize this subject line to be the SUMMARY of the defect?(Not for each individual defect but I would like to customize thetemplate so that I can use it for all the defect the I email)

You can always change the subject line by deleting the defaultsubject and typing your own .

16). How to upload test cases from excel into TesDirector(steps to upload)?

First we have to activate Excel in TestDirector with the help ofadd-in page.

after activation, we can view the option as 'export toTestDirector' in Excel under tools tab.

TestDirector is software management tool. It is a MercuryInteractive product.

Rational Robot is a Rational product. It comes included with"TestManager" module for software management.

Integrating TestDirector and Rational robot is not feasible.

Diff b/n data validation and data integrity.... In datavalidation we check whether the input data/output data is valid interms of its length, data type etc

In data integrity we check out database contains only accuratedata. We implement data integrity with the help of integrityconstraints. So in data integrity we check whether the integrityconstraints are implemented correctly or not.

Use Of Filters in TestDirector:

Limits the data displayed according to the criteria you specify.For example, you could create a filter that displays only thosetests associated with the specified tester and subject.Each filter contains multiple filter conditions. These areexpressions that are applied to a test plan tree or to the fields ina grid. When the filter is applied, only those records that meetthe filter conditions are displayed.

You create and edit filters with the Filter dialog box. This openswhen you select the Filter command. Once you have created a

filter, you can save it for future use.

This helps QA Manager to review what extent the requirementsare covered.

25). What are the 3 views and what is the purpose of eachview?

The 3 views of requirement are:

1) Document View-tabulated view

2) Coverage View-establish a relationship between requirementand the test associated with them along with their executionstatus. Mostly the requirements are written in this view only.

3) Coverage analysis view-show a chart with requirementassociated with the test, and execution status of the test.

26). How many types of reports can be generated usingTestDirector?

Reports on TestDirector display information about testrequirements, the test plan, test runs, and defect tracking.

Reports can be generated from each TestDirector module usingthe default settings, or you can customize them. Description tab, displaying a description of the selected test inthe Test Grid.

History tab, displaying the changes made to a test. For eachchange, the grid displays the field name, date of the change,

name of the person who made the change, and the new value.

28). How will you generate the defect ID in TestDirector?Is it generated automatically or not?

When you 'll add a new defect and submit it to TestDirector it willgenerate a new ID for that defect.

5. What is Test Lab?

In the Test Lab the test cases are executed. Test Lab will alwaysbe linked to the test plan. Usually both are given the same namefor easy recognition.

6. How to customize the defect management cycle in QualityCenter?

Firstly one should collect all the attributes that has to be part ofthe defect management like version, defect origin, defect details,etc. Later using the modify options in QC one can change thedefect module accordingly.

7. What is the advantage of writing test cases in Quality Centerthan writing in excel sheet?

Although creating test cases in excel sheet will be faster thandoing it in QC as excel is more user friendly when compared to

QC one require to upload them to QC and this process may causesome delay due to various reasons. Also QC provides link to othertests which in turn is mapped to the requirements.

8. What is the difference between TestDirector and QualityCenter?

The main difference is QC is more secured than TestDirector. InQuality Center the login page shows projects associated only tothe logged in user unlike in Test Director where one can see allthe available projects. Also test management is much moreimproved in QC than TD. Defect linkage functionality in QC ismore flexible when compared to TD.

9. What is meant by Instance?

Test instance is an instance of test case in Test Lab. Basically itmeans the test case which you have imported in Test lab forexecution.

10. What is the use of requirement option in TestDirector?

Requirement module in TD is used for writing the requirementsand preparing the traceability matrix.

11. Is it possible to maintain test data in TestDirector?

Yes one can attach the test data to the corresponding test casesor create a separate folder in test plan to store them.

12. If one tries to upgrade from TestDirector 7.2 to QC 8.0 then isthere risk of losing any data?

No there is no risk of losing the data during the migrationprocess. One has to follow proper steps for successful migration.

13. How is a bug closed in TestDirector?

Once the test cases are executed in the Test Lab and bugs are

detected, it is logged as a defect using the Defect Report Tab andsent to the developer. The bug will have 5 different status namelyNew, Open, Rejected, Deferred and Closed. Once the bug hasbeen fixed and verified its status is changed to closed. This waythe bug lifecycle ends.

14. In TD how are the test cases divided into different groups?

In the test plan of TestDirector one can create separate folder forvarious modules depending on the project. A main module in thetest plan can be created and then sub modules be added to that.

15. What is the difference between TD and Bugzilla?

TestDirector is a test management tool. In TD one can writemanual and automated test cases, add requirements, maprequirements to the test cases and log defects. Bugzilla is usedonly for logging and tracking the defects.

16. Are TestDirector and QC one and the same?

Yes TestDirector and Quality Center are same. Version of TD 8.2

onwards was known as Quality Center. The latest version ofQuality Center is 9.2. QC is much more advanced when comparedto TD.

17. What is the instance of the test case inside the Test Set?

Test set is a place containing sets of test cases. We can storemany test cases inside test set. Now instance of test case is thetest case which you have imported in the test tab. If an anothertest case has the same steps as this test case till half way thenyou can create the instance of this test case.

18. What are the various types of reports in TestDirector?

In TD reports are available for requirements, test cases, testexecution, defects, etc. The reports give various details likesummary, progress, coverage, etc. Reports can be generatedfrom each TestDirector module using the default settings or it canbe customized. When customizing a report, filters and sortconditions can be applied and the required layout of the fields inthe report can be specified. Sub-reports can also be added to themain report. The settings of the reports can be saved as favoriteviews and reloaded as required.

Using the 'associate defect' option in TestDirector one can mapthe same defect to a number of test cases.

20. Is it possible to create custom defect template inTestDirector?

It is not possible to create ones own template for defect reportingin TestDirector but one can customize the template that isalready available in TestDirector as required.

21. Can a script in TD be created before recording script inWinrunner or QTP?

Any automation script can be created directly in TD. You need toopen the tool (Winrunner or QTP) and then connect to TD byspecifying the url, project, domain, userid and password. Andthen you just record the script like you always do. When you savethe script, you can save it in TD instead of your local system.

22. How to ensure that there is no duplication of bugs inTestDirector?

In the defect tracking window of TD there is a find similardefect icon. When this icon is clicked after writing the defect, if

anybody else has entered the same defect then it points it out.

24. What does the test grid contain?

The test grid displays all the relevant tests related to a project inTD. history tab that displays the changes made to a test.

25. What are the 3 views in TD?

The three views in TD are Plan Test which is used to prepare a setof test cases as per the requirements, Run Test which is used forexecuting the prepared test scripts with respect to the test casesand finally Track Defects which is used by the test engineers forlogging the defects.

26. How to upload data from an excel sheet to TestDirector?

In order to upload data from excel sheet to TD firstly excel addin

has to be installed, then the rows in the excel sheet which has tobe imported to TD should be selected, and then finally the Exportto TD option in the tools menu of TestDirector should be selected.

In TD data is stored on the server.

30. Why should we create an Instance?

Test Instance is used to run the test case in the test lab. It is thetest instance that you can run since you can't run the test case intest set.
