According to a report of the Southern Metropolis Daily, quot- ing the Shenzhen railway office, signs giving priority to women will be put up at the stations of the four lines that will introduce the service. The move is to improve the commuting experience and safety of female passengers and will be expanded to other Metro lines if it proves to be good. Unlike Guangzhou Metro’s similar rule, which applies only during rush hours, Shenzhen Metro Co. provides the service all day to give priority to female passengers in some designated carriages. Guangzhou Metro Group said Friday that it would pilot a similar program on Line 1 start- ing Wednesday, giving priority to female riders who take the designated carriages during rush hours. Earlier in the month, Wang Rong, chairman of the Guangdong Provincial Com- mittee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Confer- ence, visited Shenzhen and Guangzhou Metro companies to research the setting up of women-only carriages follow- ing a proposal by local political adviser, Su Zhongyang, at the annual session of the provin- cial political advisory body. Su said that women-only carriages would show the society’s respect and protection of women, as women often feel embarrassed when they are jammed too close to others in train cars. Some netizens said the idea was good, but hard to imple- ment, as it could reduce the overall capacity of trains and easily cause disputes when male passengers enter the carriages. Statistics show the city’s eight Metro lines handle around 4.5 million passengers a day, accounting for 40 percent of all commuters that use public transport. Han Ximin [email protected] IN the latest move to improve driving civility, Shenzhen traf- fic police will tighten checks on drivers who illegally park in the restricted yellow-grid areas, which have been designated at intersections and entrances or exits that could easily cause congestion. Starting July 3, police will impose a 1,000-yuan (US$146) fine on each parking violator after a one-week grace period. If a violation causes congestion or a traffic accident, the fine will double to 2,000 yuan. If a driver is caught dropping off or picking up passengers in the yellow-grid areas, the driver will be fined 200 yuan and have three penalty points added to his/her driver’s license. When the vehicles in the front go slowly due to traffic conges- tion or waiting for a traffic light, vehicles that enter the yellow- grid areas will be treated as “occupying a yellow grid while waiting for traffic.” Under this circumstance, drivers will be fined 300 yuan each time if they don’t move within 5 seconds, or if they intentionally drive slowly and fail to exit the restricted area within 10 seconds, according to the traffic police. So far this year, police have checked 996 yellow-grid viola- tions, of which 62 percent were made by light vehicles and 59 percent were locally registered vehicles. Police also revealed the 10 road sections where yellow-grid areas are most often illegally occupied by vehicles. The road sections include the intersection of Gongming and Huangjiang roads, the entry area of Tongle Checkpoint for southbound vehicles on Guangzhou-Shenzhen Express- way, Dongbin-Shahe West Road Flyover, Pingdi section of Long- gang Boulevard, Wanghai Road and Houhai Boulevard. Police will send patrol officers to check for violations at hospi- tals, schools, business areas and entrances to expressways with monitoring cameras. The public is encouraged to report such violations via the traffic police’s WeChat account, microblog or Alipay. Police will fine the violators and give a 100- yuan reward for each verified clue. The individual cap for rewards is 500 yuan a month. The public is also encouraged to call 8333- 3333 to report yellow grids that are improperly designated. In another action to improve driving civility, Shenzhen police caught 149 drivers Friday for fail- ing to give priority to pedestrians at intersections without traffic lights. A total of 758 pedestrians and bikers were fined for going against red lights and 1,551 pedes- trians and bikers were warned for using motorist lanes. Guilemond said he used to invite some friends to dance with him but they didn’t know how, so he taught them. “At first it was between friends. Little by little, friends invited their friends and it grew like this,” said Guilemond. Now they have a WeChat group called “Salsa begin- ner class” with over 125 people. “But mostly around 10 people come to the class each time.” Guilemond said he just wants to share the fun of dancing with friends. “Salsa, and dancing in general, is a great way to meet new people, to make new friends, while having fun, and doing a bit of body exercises, you can burn a few calories too.” “Dancing is also a great way to express yourself and gain confidence. It’s the best remedy against feeling down,” said Gui- lemond, who used to be very shy but now seems pretty outgoing. ‘Dancing is the best remedy against feeling down’ City pilots women-only Metro cars Patrice Guilemond More trains SHENZHEN railway authority will add a train from Shenzhen Railway Station to Xi’an and three temporary round-trip trains from the city’s east railway station to Maoming, Nanxiong and Nanchang in the new operation schedule that will take effect July 1.
