It was considered important that the new structure not clash with any of the existing architecture in the area - as there are already so many different styles of architecture present (with the addition of the modern Architecture building in the near future) it was decided that the roofing structure must have a soft, understated aesthetic. With this in mind, the concept of an organic curved shell was formed, in order to determine the exact shape a number of different points of inspiration were investigated. POINTS OF INSPIRATION DESIGN PROGRESSION The initial point of inspiration for the form of the structure was based on the curved hulls of timber clad and ribbed ships - the shape of the hull offers a subtle shape which would not compete with the surrounding architecture. There is also an element of patterning with the ribs at equally spaced distances, framing the longitudinally spanned cladding. Another source of inspiration of form came from bones, specifically the skeletal system of a whale and the wishbone of a turkey - both sources complement the concept of a gently curving shell. The rib bones of a whale were mimicked in the design as part of the supporting steel structure - it is intended that the thick supporting members both tie the structure to the ground and give the feeling strength and security. Continuing the exploration of whale bones as a point of inspiration, whale vertebrae were considered when designing the interface between the two steel supports and the glass ridge line. // With the aim of creating a roof structure which achieved all of the goals outlined previously, the focus shifted to the form which the structure would take.

POINTS OF INSPIRATIONDESIGN PROGRESSIONThe initial point of inspiration for the form

of the structure was based on the curved hulls of timber clad and ribbed ships - the shape of the hull offers a subtle shape which would not compete with the surrounding architecture.
