News from Geof’s Birds

Earlier this year a few of the Home Island oldies were talking about a Parrot that flew daily from the big house to the trees behind the hospital. This will be the bird , an oriental Dollarbird. There were three birds on Home and two birds on West. The West Island birds are at Johnny’s banana farm, which is this photo. These guys eat grasshoppers and other big bugs, hopefully wasps. They migrate here every year to get away from the Northern hemisphere’s winter.

APRIL COUNCIL MEETING: At the April Council meeting on West Island we were pleased to have so many interested members of the public in attendance. Council adopted two new policies; a South End Commercial Activities Policy, and a Caretaker Dwelling Policy. Council also determined that the area for the application of Local Laws will extend 200m into the lagoon so that the waters close to the shore can be managed under the Shire’s Local Laws. Approval was also provided for the Shire to advertise for tenders for the construction of a house on Home Island. Council menerima dua policy baru, South End Commercial Activities Policy, dan Caretaker Dwelling Policy. DIRECTION ISLAND RESORT PROPOSAL: As many of you would know 23 representatives of the community joined a Community Reference Group (CRG) to discuss the proposal from Cocos Boronia Resort for Direction Island. The CRG reviewed all materials and got information/advice from a panel of experts in the areas of Environment, Infrastructure, Tourism, Economic Development and Culture/Heritage. They discussed and debated the proposal and offered recommendations to Council. The input from the CRG has been combined with public submissions received on the proposal into one report which is available on the Shire’s website. Hard copies of the report can also be picked up at the Shire office. I would like to acknowledge the members of the CRG for giving up a full day to participate in this important decision. The request from Cocos Boronia Resort will be considered by Council at the May Council meeting.

SOUTH END ROAD: We realise that for many people the closure of the South End Road is very inconvenient and frustrating. We therefore do not make that decision lightly. We are trying to balance community and tourism needs with safety and risk and good management of our assets. As you will see from the photos taken during the recent closure, much of the road was under water for most of the time with water levels reaching the door during some periods. Driving on flooded or saturated roads causes significant damage to roads as tyres push water off the road, the water takes the road surface with it creating new potholes and worsening existing potholes. On Cocos, we are not easily able to replace the surface material and repair pot holes as road building materials (corallite) is in scarce supply. Anyone wanting to know more about road management is welcome to contact us at Shire during work hours.

Cocos (Keeling) Islands News (cont’d) Berita Pulu Cocos (Keeling) (seterusnya)

These are a few items that I think may be of particular interest but we are always willing to meet with members of the community who are interested in knowing more about Shire activities.

Ini adalah berberapa perkara yang saya ingat mungkin jadi keminatan tetapi kami selalu sanggup untuk bertemu dengan penduduk masyarakat yang berminat untuk mengetahui lebih tentang aktiviti-aktiviti Shire.

Thought for the Day

A man walks into a lawyer's office and asks, "How much do you charge?"

The lawyer says, "$5,000 for three questions."

"Wow, that's pretty expensive, isn't it?" the man asks.

"Yes," says the lawyer. "Now, what's your third question?"

If you have 10 apples in one hand and 14 oranges in the other, what do you have?

Really, really big hands.

Apparently you can't use "beef stew" as a password.

It's not stroganoff.

A horse walks into a bar...

The bartender says, "Hey."

The horse replies, "Sure."

What do you call two monkeys that share an Amazon account?

Prime mates.

George Clooney, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Matthew McCo-naughey get together to make a movie.

Clooney says, "I'll direct."

DiCaprio says, "I'll act."

McConaughey says, "I'll write, I'll write, I'll write."

THE FOUR TOP TYPES OF LITTER

Chewing Gum

Chewing gum the second most commonly dropped litter and local councils are spending around 60million pounds per year removing gum from our pavements.

We’ve been chewing gum for millennia – we used to chew the sap of certain trees. But our love of chewing gum grew and we started to manufacturer it from a rubbery equivalent called polyisobutylene. This material is also used in the manufacturer of the inner tubes of tyres – yum! Fortunately some brands offer ‘natural’ chewing gum which breaks down in the natural environment or on a compost heap – these include Peppersmith, Chicza, Chewsy and Simply Gum.

Cigarette Butts

Smoking litter is the most commonly dropped litter. Cigarette litter is time consuming to clean up because it is small and tends to get trapped in cracks and grates on the ground. Cigarette filters can take up to 12 years to degrade and cigarette butts leak toxins that contaminate water and harm marine life and the environment. Cigarette filters have been found in the stomachs of fish, birds, whales and other marine creatures, who mistake them for food.

Confectionery wrappers

As well as our nicotine and chewing gum habits, many of us crave chocolate or crisps at some point during the day. Once upon a time you could find a few chocolate bars and sweets in fully recyclable or biodegradable packaging such as paper or cardboard, but it’s coming far less easy to find those brands. So vote with your money and support the brands that support your zero waste lifestyle.

Drinks bottles and cans

Let’s be honest, there’s no excuse for this one! If you buy a bottle of soft drink every lunch time then you’re spending an insane amount of money. An interesting article in news stated that children aged between seven and 15 are now spending more on soft drinks than toys!

Quick Tips for Reading Nutrition Labels

Being your own health and label-reading detective adds another tool to help you take control of your own health and well-being. This can indicate whether you’re fuelling your body with enough of the nutrients it needs. 1. How many Servings is That? Serving size is the size or portion of the product that equates to the amount of nutrients l isted. All the information provided in the Nutrition Facts label is based upon the serving size listed. Serving per container is the total amount of servings per container. Portion size isn’t found on the Nutrition Facts label. It’s different for everyone based on their unique health goals and needs, like if they have a medical condition. Moreover, the recommended portion size for each person may not be the same as the serving size listed on the package, particularly if you’re managing a condition like diabetes. Let’s use a bag of pasta as an example. If the serving size says 1 cup of pasta, the nutrition information below the s e r v i n g s i z e ( f a t s , carbohydrates, protein, sugars, fiber) only apply to that 1 cup of pasta. 2. Look for Fibre Pay attention to the grams of fiber per serving on a Nutrition Facts Label. Aim for food that have higher fiber amount at least 5 grams per serving. Food that are high in fibre include broccoli, wholegrain bread and oats, berries, pears, melons. 3. Know your Sugars Total sugars are the total amount of sugars found in a produc t , bo th na tura l ly occurring (like sugars in fruit and milk) and added. Added sugars simply refer to the amount of sugar that’s been added during the processing of the food product. Added sugars can include maple syrup, concentrated vegetables or fruit juice and high-fructose corn syrup.
