Speaking

5 How does this house differ from yours?Make notes. Then tell your partner.

My house is much bigger than this house.

Imagine a home that canwalk slowly around town on six legs!

This amazing 3 metres high house was the ideaof a group of designers from Denmark who worked

with engineers at MIT in Massachusetts, USA. The house has a living room, a kitchen, a toilet, and a bed.

A computer controls the legs, but there must always be threelegs on the ground to keep it stable. The house does not travel

very fast – about 160 metres an hour, but it can walk on any kind ofland and can escape floods. It is very eco-friendly because it runson solar and wind energy. It also collects rain water for use in thekitchen while a small wood-burning stove provides heat inside.Do you need a change of scenery? Do you need to live closer

to work? Do you want to avoid your noisy neighbours?Simple – just take the house for

a walk! How cool is that?

LaGuardia High School in NewYork is not like most schools. It’s a famous school of music,

art and performing arts. Jennifer Aniston and Al Pacino are just twoof LaGuardia’s past students who became famous. So what’s it like to go

to such a school?

Students at LaGuardia study Art, Music, Dance and Theatre, but theymust also do all the normal school subjects such as English and Maths. Lessons start at

8 am and end at 4 pm. There are up to 10 lessons per day with a break of only fourminutes between them. Students have at least three studio lessons every day and sixschool subjects.

LaGuardia has rules just like every other school. Students must show their IDcards to enter the building and must leave immediately after their last lesson of the day. They must dress well and must show respect to teachers and other students.

Students must not use mobile phones in class or download music from the schoolcomputers.

Just like every other school, life at LaGuardia can be toughat times. The students know that they must work hard if

they want to become stars of the future. That’sthe price of fame.

Speaker 1: ‘I live in San Francisco and I think it’s thebest city in America! It has a stunning harbour, andthere are parks and other green spaces all over the city. For people who love the outdoors, San Francisco is theperfect place to live in because mountains, beaches, valleys, forests and coastlines are all only a short driveaway. A lot of people don’t like San Francisco’sweather though. It’s very windy and very foggy! But I don’t mind at all. I quite like the fog because it givesthe city a special atmosphere’.

Bangkok is famous for its busy roads and crazy drivers. ForThais, it can be difficult getting around the city. But fortourists, it can be exciting. Here is some information aboutpublic transport in Bangkok…

Tuk-tuks are three-wheeled taxis and Thailand’s mostfamous mode of transport. Every tourist should experiencea ride in a tuk-tuk at least once. But before you get in the taximake sure you arrange a price with the driver. This type of taxidoesn’t have a meter and drivers often try to cheat tourists.

Songthaews are like tuk-tuks, only bigger. They arefun and cheap but they might not take you where you want togo. Songthaews take people round the local areas and don’tusually go much further.

River taxis are one of the quickest and most relaxingways to get around Bangkok. But you have to be fast on yourfeet to get on and off these moving boats. They don’t wait foranyone!

Catch a bus in Bangkok only if you’re a person wholikes to do things the hard way. It isn’t unusual for two buseswith the same number to stop at the same bus stop but then goin completely different directions! Even Thais get lost on these.

Metered car taxis are a comfortable way to get aroundthe city. But, like tuk-tuk drivers, car taxi drivers may try tocheat tourists. One popular way is to ‘forget’ to turn on themeter. So make sure it’s on when you get in the taxi.

A special feature of Bangkok transport is its ‘women-only’ buses. Ten bus lines only allow female passengers onthose buses. The buses are easy to recognise – they’re all brightpink.

Buses in Bangkok only stop when you ask, so put yourarm out if you want one to stop. And don’t forget that the backseat is for monks*. If you are on the backseat, you have tomove when a monk gets on the bus.

Motorcycle taxis are a favourite with locals becausethey are fast. But they’re not a good idea for tourists. Thedrivers all drive very dangerously and there are a lot ofaccidents.
