It’s great to see the Eastgate full ofyoung people – whether they’reexploring the café, starting a newclass in the studio, or going into thetheatre for the first time. Theircombination of energy, excitementand imagination means thatanything can happen! And there arecertainly lots of happenings to enjoythis spring ...

First up is Hop and Bop, a week-long course for young dancersduring the Easter holidays. Thenthere’s an open day on 8th Aprilwhen children (and adults) cansample some of our Engage classes,and go on to enjoy a funny anddelightful show by Jango Starr calledOne Man Shoe.

In May the focus shifts to teenagers,with an evening performance by theTommy Smith Youth JazzOrchestra who can be relied on todeliver classic jazz repertoire with abrilliant combination of talent, skill,exuberance and verve. And youngdancers will perform a new workabout identity as a curtain-raiser forthe extraordinary Brewband.

In June it’s back to entertainmentfor and by younger children.Babies and toddlers have a treatin store when Starcatchers bringtheir captivating new showMamaBabaMe to the Eastgate.Meanwhile performers from asyoung as three years old havetheir own chance to star in Dareto Dance, featuring the juniorstudents of Fiona Henderson Schoolof Dance and Performing Arts.

HorseMcDonald takes us on a journey from wearing two-tone velvet loons to being one of Scotland’s mostcelebrated singers, and through those times whenshe had to be... Careful.

With six dancers performing a series of quartets,duets, sextets and solos to Franck’s broodingVariations Symphoniques, this seminalmasterpiece celebrates the pure beauty ofmovement. Marguerite and Armand is Ashton'sbeautiful and emotional retelling of a well-knownstory, familiar to us through Verdi's opera LaTraviata. Nashville-based roots music hotshots Woody Pineshave wowed the crowds on both sides of the Atlanticand last time they toured the UK, reviewersunanimously declared them to be one of the mostentertaining acts on the Americana circuit.

These Muddy Roots Records stars have won fansaround the world, Maverick magazine praising their lastrelease as “an intoxicating blend of rural and urbanstringband, country blues and jug band music.”

BBC Radio 2 presenter Bob Harris is a fan and regularlyfeatures tracks on his show. He invited the band toappear on the stage he hosted at the big C2C event atthe 02 arena in London.

Roy Orbison and Buddy Holly both grew up in the same part of Texas. They bothrecorded their earlier work in the Norman Petty Studios in Clovis, New Mexico, evenat one point recording the same songs. Each artist brought a unique Texas influenceto their music and each created a totally original, individual sound. Think of Only theLonely and Crying, That’ll be the Day and Peggy Sue.

Spring into summer with the musicians of thePeebles Concert Band. This local band is madeup of musicians ranging in age from 14 to 84,playing a variety of woodwind, brass, bass andpercussion instruments.

The concert will feature all sorts of music fromclassical to movie themes, musicals to marches,with a bit of 70s and 80s pop thrown in for goodmeasure. It promises to be a fun night packedfull of fabulous music!

Elfair Grug Dyer, Rebecca Mills, Esther Swiftand Angelina Warburton are four professionalharpists who met when they studied at RoyalNorthern College of Music in Manchester.They began playing as a harp quartet in 2007and since then have released three CDs, touredextensively and even performed under thedinosaur in the Natural History Museum inLondon. Clouds’ music is written by Esther Swiftand draws much from her background in folkmusic and improvisation though it is alsoinfluenced by jazz, blues, dance and manynew found extended techniques.

Gary Martin presents a new show featuring some of Scotland’s top bluesand jazz musicians.

Richard O’Donnell opens the evening playing blues standards on piano.Next up is Blues and Beyond with Neil Warden on Weissenborn lap steelguitar/electric guitar and Gary Martin on harmonica/vocals. This roots line-up features special guest John Burgess on saxophone and clarinet.

Headline is the Jansen Interceptors. This five piece band plays in the classicblues style. Fronted by Gary Martin, the bank features John Bruce on electricguitar and special guest John Burgess on tenor saxophone as they tearthrough a mix of covers and original blues compositions.
