We’re located centrally, opposite Halifax Railway Station and ten minutes from the bus station. The main entrance is located via the copper building, next door to The Piece Hall’s Southgate entrance on Blackledge.

We don’t charge a booking fee. However, we are a charity and do have a suggested donation of £1 per transaction.

Copper Auditorium Seating 115, our state-of-the-art cinema provides the ultimate film experience and also doubles up as a stunning and intimate studio space.

Red Brick Auditorium Seating 220, this auditorium sits within our beautiful Grade II* listed red brick Georgian Chapel and is used for talks, theatre, music performances, film screenings and more.

The Cornerstone Room This space is used for meetings and workshops and is also hireable.

Café/Bar We serve a large selection of cask ales and craft beers from breweries home and abroad, along with a great selection of ciders, wines and premium spirits. All this complements the locally sourced and seasonal dishes that are served in our wonderful new Café/Bar.

Halifax Culture Hub Square Chapel is part of the Halifax Culture Hub. It’s a joint initiative with The Piece Hall Trust, and exists to promote the wonderful cultural and heritage things happening in our little corner of Yorkshire.

It’s here! Our new building and this, our official launch season. We’ve been dreaming of what the new building might be like, but the actuality has surpassed our wildest imagination. It’s an awe-inspiring space that’s light, airy yet welcoming and cosy, and filled with artistry and heritage. We love it and we hope that you will too.

Whilst, in many ways, the organisation hasn’t changed, we’ve stuck true to the principles that have made us a success over the years. In other ways, we’ve totally changed: we are now open from 10am until late everyday with films, food and drink on offer alongside even more of the live performances that audiences have been enjoying for years.

Our food offer is seasonal, fresh, exciting, and is built around the best produce from local suppliers; like our artistic programme – it changes quickly, miss it and it’s gone! The same goes for our amazing new range of craft beers and real ales. Square Chapel has always been about people coming together and a belief that the best experiences are shared – and this runs throughout the whole organisation including our theatre and cinema programme and our café/bar.

So…onto that launch programme…we kick off with a real bang, the unmissable Gandini Juggling with Smashed, launching a whole weekend of family shows that’s rounded off by a very special performance from our Poet Laureate, Carol Ann Duffy. Our first big theatre show is Antigone,

in partnership with Actors of Dionysus. I particularly wanted them back this season as, when I started working here, 14 years ago, that was the first show I came to see, realising what an incredible place I was in.

We have an amazing opera production of Mozart’s The Magic Flute, alongside a range of exciting companies we’re welcoming back, including Paines Plough, Third Angel and Odd Doll. We also have two exclusive events with our supportive patrons – George Costigan appearing with Willy Russell, and Natalie Gavin featuring in two events celebrating the life and works of the West Yorkshire writer Andrea Dunbar.

You’ll notice that we now have an enormous amount of film screenings showing the best new releases and titles you might not see elsewhere on the big screen. You’ll also notice that you won’t find them in this brochure – partly because with nearly 600 screenings a year, we can’t fit them all in – so do visit our website and pick up a copy of our weekly film listings from the Box Office.

This is, without a doubt, the most exciting time I’ve known at Square Chapel and the most exciting season we’ve ever had. All of our staff, trustees, volunteers, friends and supporters have worked incredibly hard to get us here – and we hope to see you all at some point over this season.

Carol Ann Duffy & John Sampson

Sunday 10 September 7.30pm, £15 The Poet Laureate and her favourite court musician bring an hour of light and shade, laughter and reflection to Square Chapel. Carol Ann will read from her acclaimed collections, including The World’s Wife, The Bees and other works. Lucid, honest and accessible, her writing explores both everyday experience and our inner worlds in deceptively simple, profoundly resonant poems. Alongside the words, John Sampson takes us on a virtuoso tour through musical highlights of the past 500 years, played on a fascinating collection of period and modern instruments.

Lyngo Theatre presents Jack and the Beanstalk

Sunday 10 September 2.30pm, £5 Fee Fi Fo Fum! It’s a giant of a show, we’d love you to come! Metropolis with live piano accompaniment

Sunday 17 September 7pm, £10 One of the biggest film events of the century, Fritz Lang’s 1927 sci-fi epic can finally be seen — for the first time in 83 years — as the director originally intended and as seen by German cinema-goers in 1927. Mikron Theatre Company presents Best Foot Forward

Thursday 19 October 7.30pm, £13 Something’s afoot at Pearling Manor and it isn’t just the walkers. The beautiful hostel, rich in YHA history, is lovely but falling apart.

External forces are out to grab and turn it into a golf club. Cue Connie, first ever warden, with a heart as big as her rucksack.

Everwitch Theatre presents Bomb Happy

Emerging Music presents Peggy Seeger “First Time Ever” Tour

Wednesday 29 November 8pm, £18 Peggy Seeger’s long-awaited memoir, ‘First Time Ever’ is named for the classic love song that her husband (Ewan MacColl) wrote for her. Peggy combines performances of the songs that have meant the most to her with extracts from the book. Expect anecdotes from her long and remarkable career delivered with her trademark wry humour together with memorable music performances from her and sons Calum and Neill MacColl. This is a very special show, presenting a fascinating and highly entertaining insight into the remarkable life of one of our best loved ‘Queens of Folk’.

We work in partnership with Orange Box young people’s centre and verd de gris Ltd to deliver ‘Creative Communities’ – an exciting community outreach programme. This is supported with funding from the National Lottery, through the Big Lottery Fund. Our Open Door schools project offers an extensive programme of subsidised theatre performances and workshops for children and teachers.

We’re located centrally, opposite Halifax Railway Station and ten minutes from the bus station. The main entrance is located via the copper building, next door to The Piece Hall’s Southgate entrance on Blackledge.

Pricing & TermsConcessions are available for most shows. Please ask at Box Office when booking.

We don’t charge a booking fee. However, we are a charity and do have a suggested donation of £1 per transaction.

Copper Auditorium Seating 115, our state-of-the-art cinema provides the ultimate film experience and also doubles up as a stunning and intimate studio space.

Red Brick Auditorium Seating 220, this auditorium sits within our beautiful Grade II* listed red brick Georgian Chapel and is used for talks, theatre, music performances, film screenings and more.

The Cornerstone Room This space is used for meetings and workshops and is also hireable.

Café/Bar We serve a large selection of cask ales and craft beers from breweries home and abroad, along with a great selection of ciders, wines and premium spirits. All this complements the locally sourced and seasonal dishes that are served in our wonderful new Café/Bar.

Halifax Culture Hub Square Chapel is part of the Halifax Culture Hub. It’s a joint initiative with The Piece Hall Trust, and exists to promote the wonderful cultural and heritage things happening in our little corner of Yorkshire.
