Dear Mr Knights,

Re: Freedom of Information Request re – Equipment Specifications

With reference to your Freedom of Information request dated 16th October, the information you requested is detailed below. You asked:

I would like to request only specifications on equipment used by frontline firefighters, which are stored on their frontline appliances.

• Specifications on the different types of Branches.• Specification on the different types of Ladders.• Specifications on the different types of Light Portable pumps.• Specifications on the different types of Lifting Airbags.

Specifications on the different types of Branches

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service use the following Branches:

FB5X MKII

The FB5X Mk II branch is a hand held foam making branch that incorporates a pickup tube.

The FB5X Mk II branch is approximately 464mm long and has a large circular raised ring halfway along its length, which is specifically for carrying and holding the branch.

Below this ring is the connection for the pickup tube, an on/off switch for the foam, and a dial for the ratio of foam to water (pre-set at 3%).

Below these connections is a 68mm male instantaneous hose connector.

AWG 1C and 2C

The AWG 1C and 2C hand controlled branches are constructed of aluminium alloy and the 1C weighs approximately 1.68kg whilst the 2C weighs approximately 2.3kg.

Inside the main body of the branch is a ‘ball valve’ which is rotated by the means of a hand lever located on the outside of the branch. The lever can be used to set the ball valve to 3 positions; jet, spray or off.

There is an instantaneous coupling one end of the branch allowing it to be easily and quickly fitted to either 70mm or 45mm delivery hose.

The branch is fitted with a rotating collar which controls the water curtain function.

At the far end of the 1C branch is an alloy 12.5mm bore nozzle that is screwed onto the end of the branch. Removing this nozzle will increase the bore size to 16mm. For the 2C there is a 19mm bore nozzle which when removed increases the bore size to 22mm.

Fogfighter

The fogfighter branch has a varied spray pattern ranging from a jet to a protective water curtain. The spray pattern is altered by turning the collar at the end of the branch.

The branch is made from hard chromed AMETAL and the housing and handle are rislan treated which improves their durability.

The flow rates of the fogfighter are 175/450 l/min at 6 bar depending on whether the internal valve is half or fully opened.

The internal valve is controlled by the operating handle situated on the top of the main body of the branch.

Ultimatic TFT FO7 and FO6

The TFT F07 is the hose reel branch supplied as a standard on fire appliances. The TFT FO6 is the branch that is the replacement for the fogfighter branch. The TFT is an “automatic” branch that produces a water stream that is controlled by a

rotating rubber collar from a jet to a wide spray. The water stream can be turned on and off and its volume controlled using the lever control

Specification on the different types of Ladders

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service use the following Ladders:

Angus Sacol 464 13.5m triple extension ladder

The ladder is of trussed construction, made from high tensile aluminium alloy. The rounds are of square section to prevent turning and the tread is ribbed to give non-

slip properties. The ladder sections run on nylon rollers in guide channels which form an integral part of

the strings. Automatic pawls with strong return springs ensure a positive action. The top section is operated by a double spliced, multi-strand, cored steel cable. The centre section is operated by a 51mm rot-proof, non-hardening extension rope. A wheel assembly is fitted to the head of the ladder to facilitate easy running against a

wall surface. Some 13.5m triple extension ladders are now fitted with an extension arrester device. Handling poles are attached by a universal joint to the main ladder section to facilitate

under running whilst pitching the ladder. Non-slip adjustable jacks are fitted to the jack-beam at the heel of the ladder to facilitate

safe operation on uneven ground. The ladder weighs approximately 100 kg.

10.5m/9m double extension ladder

It is made from high tensile aluminium alloy in a trussed construction. The rounds are of square section to prevent turning, and the tread is ribbed to give non-

slip properties. The ladder sections run on nylon rollers in guide channels which form an integral part of

the strings. The ladder is fitted with double acting automatic pawls. Extension of the ladder is achieved by means of a rot proof and non hardening extension

rope. A wheel assembly is fitted to the head of the ladder to facilitate easy running against a

wall surface. The 10.5m ladder weighs approximately 46.5 kg, whilst the 9m ladder weight

approximately 43.5kg.

Triple extension ladder

The triple extension ladders are usually between 5.5m and 6.7m long. They have strings which are made from box section aluminium alloy, and the rounds are

ribbed to give non-slip properties. They are fixed in position by twist proof jointing. The sections of the ladder are held in position by substantial brackets fixed to the strings. Extension of the ladder is achieved manually, and the sections can be easily split for

individual use. The ladder weighs approximately 23 kg.

Roof ladder (folding)

The folding roof ladder is 5.8m in length when opened, 3m when folded. It has strings constructed of box section aluminium alloy, with double-serrated rounds to

give non-slip properties. The head of the ladder has an aluminium bar hook, which in use, hooks over the ridge of

the roof. Two small rubber tyred wheels situated on the upper side of the strings, assist in running

the ladder up the roof, where once in position, it can be turned over so that the bar hook engages over the ridge tiles.

When the ladder is in use on a roof, the strings are supported along their length by roof bearers/pressure pads. These are neoprene rubber covered, and keep the ladder clear of the roof whilst allowing clearance for the toes of users.

The ladder weighs approximately 11.5 kg.

Roof ladder (one piece)

The one-piece roof ladder is 5.8m in length. It has strings constructed of box section aluminium alloy, with double-serrated rounds to

give non-slip properties. The head of the ladder has an aluminium alloy bar hook, which in use, hooks over the

ridge of the roof. Two small rubber tyre wheels situated on the upper side of the strings, assist in running

the ladder up the roof, where once in position, it can be turned over so that the bar hook engages over the ridge tiles.

When the ladder is in use on a roof, the strings are supported along their length by roof bearers/pressure pads. These are neoprene rubber covered, and keep the ladder clear of the roof.

The ladder weighs approximately 11 kg.

Specification on the different types of Light Portable pumps

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service use the following Light Portable Pumps:

Godiva Powerflow

This pump is a single stage centrifugal pump mounted to a Briggs & Stratton engine. It is fitted with a standard suction 4” ROUND THREAD suction inlet and two female instantaneous couplings. It is primed by a exhaust gas ejector primer operated by pulling the priming lever.

Engine: 570 ccFuel capacity: 8.5.LtrRun Time: approx 1.5 hoursWeight: 73 kgDelivery output: 800l/min – 3m liftDelivery pressure: 5 bar – 3m lift

Rosenbauer Otter

The Rosenbauer Otter LPP is a single stage centrifugal pump with a manual primer. The fuel tank has a capacity of 8.5 ltrs of unleaded fuel. The pump’s weight is approximately 75 kgs. The pump must only be lifted by the 4 person lift technique. It will deliver 800 ltrs of water per minute at 5 bars pressure working from a 3 meter lift. Maximum pressure is 8 bars with a maximum suction height of 7.5 meters.

Specifications on the different types of Lifting Airbags

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service use the following Lifting Airbags:

Maxi force airbag system

This system consists of:

3 x airbags of; 29.9 tonnes lifting capacity with a maximum lifting height of 330mm, 20.2 tonnes lifting capacity with a maximum lifting height of 280mm and 10.8 tonnes lifting capacity with a maximum lifting height of 208mm.

3 x 5 metre long airlines. 1 x reducer block and hand controller which are housed in a Peli box.
