OER has been gaining momentum at a number of community colleges, but West seems to be experiencing a slow start. The concern is that more and more, students will choose to take classes at OTHER colleges where OER has been rapidly replacing traditional textbooks. Please join me as we discuss the pros and cons of OER and how we can implement it at West.

Linda Alexander | Teaching & LearningGroup projects have a bad rap in on-campus classes and they are often assumed to be too challenging for online classes. However, employers say that being a “team player” is an extremely important soft skill, so students should get this experience before they enter the workplace. Fortunately, current instructional technology can make working in groups a more positive experience for both students and instructors. This workshop will discuss ways to use technology available in Etudes or Canvas: (1) to facilitate active participation in collaborative assignments and (2) to help instructors chart progress in group projects on the individual and group level.

What works for one person may not work for another and what worked for you as a 15-year-old may not work for you now. So, the challenge of stress management is incorporating effective strategies that work for you personally at this particular point in your life.

While some people are chronically stressed, which leads to exhaustion, other people seem to have a high stress tolerance. These "stress hardy" individuals view stress as challenges and chances for new opportunities. They seem to thrive while others succumb to the stress. Are you stress hardy?

This workshop will address ways to counteract stress, depression, and suicide.

But that assumption is no longer valid” (Prensky, 2001). According to Mark Prensky, anyone born before 1981 is a “digital immigrant” while Gen Y and Gen Z are digital natives—they think “in digital.” At this session, take (private) inventory of your own online instruction, and examine how your online course may be influenced by your generational orientation to technology.
