1:00 - 2:00 pm eFolio and the Blended Classroom HLRC-4E

Bruce Jacobs | Digital Campus / Technology & the Classroom / Web 2.0 & Social SoftwareEven in a traditional classroom, you can offer students a rich array of supplemental materials - from worksheets and practice tests to audio and video resources - all of which can be accessed during class or anytime of day or night on students’ smartphones, tablets, or computers. Bruce Jacobs | Technology & the ClassroomWhether you use a Mac or PC, you can easily keep track of assignments, input notes on students, track grades, attendance, and missing work by automating classroom administration with free or low-cost grading software. These inexpensive, simple-to-use software programs offer robust features that can store years of classroom statistics on your own hard drive or the web. The programs make it easy to show students where they stand at any point in the semester and significantly reduce instructor paperwork and tedious arithmetic, particularly for adjuncts who teach at multiple campuses.

3:30 - 4:30 pm #SocialMediaintheClassroom HLRC-4E

Natalie Nagthall Ssensalo | Web 2.0 & Social SoftwareSocial media has become one of the greatest educational tools of all time, but it is still highly underutilized within higher education. It can be a powerful educational tool that provides unique and dynamic learning experiences to students and teachers alike. The opportunities for social media use are virtually endless. While there are many different social media platforms, most are very user-friendly and require little front-end work. It is time for faculty to start embracing this form of learning and begin to infuse social media in the classroom.

Linda Alexander l Digital CampusOpen Educational Resources (OER) focus on the use of “no-cost” college textbooks. OER has been gaining momentum at a number of community colleges, but West seems to be experiencing a slow start. The concern is that more and more, students will choose to take classes at OTHER colleges where OER has been rapidly replacing traditional textbooks. Please join me as we discuss the pros and cons of OER and how we can implement it at West.

3:30 - 4:30 pm Group Projects in Online Classes: Monitoring Progress/Participation HLRC-4E

Linda Alexander | Teaching & LearningGroup projects have a bad rap in on-campus classes and they are often assumed to be too challenging for online classes. However, employers say that being a “team player” is an extremely important soft skill, so students should get this experience before they enter the workplace. Fortunately, current instructional technology can make working in groups a more positive experience for both students and instructors. This workshop will discuss ways to use technology available in Etudes or Canvas: (1) to facilitate active participation in collaborative assignments and (2) to help instructors chart progress in group projects on the individual and group level.

MONDAY, OCTOBER 9

1:00 - 2:00 pm Stress, Depression, and Suicide HLRC-4E

P. Gayle Harris Watkins | Teaching & LearningThere is no one magic way that helps relieve everyone’s stress all of the time. What works for one person may not work for another and what worked for you as a 15-year-old may not work for you now. So, the challenge of stress management is incorporating effective strategies that work for you personally at this particular point in your life.

While some people are chronically stressed, which leads to exhaustion, other people seem to have a high stress tolerance. These "stress hardy" individuals view stress as challenges and chances for new opportunities. They seem to thrive while others succumb to the stress. Are you stress hardy?

This workshop will address ways to counteract stress, depression, and suicide.

2:15 - 3:15 pm Google Voice is My Personal Digital Secretary! HLRC-4E

Grace Chee | Digital Classroom / Teaching & LearningI give out my cell number to my students, so they can text me. Google Voice is like having your own, digital personal secretary, all for free. You can screen callers, as callers are announced and you can choose to pick up or send to voicemail. You can also listen to the caller’s message before answering the call, or create quiet hours when some or none of your phones ring. Plus, if you lose your phone, you still have a great contact management system, which is wonderful for those who teach on multiple campuses. Planning on traveling abroad? Receive or make calls free to the United States, or cheaply abroad with wifi.

3:30 - 4:30 pm Teaching the World Through Comics or Adding Graphics with Slideshare HLRC-4E

Grace Chee | Teaching & Learning / Technology & the ClassroomCaptain America and Wonder Woman to Discuss Race and Gender in a History Class? Yes, we can and yes, we do. Slideshare makes graphics and videos easy to add – especially into Powerpoint lectures you can upload to the web. For students, the benefit is access to your lectures anytime, anywhere! You can send your students a link, or embed it in Etudes. The benefit for faculty, is that you only have to upload once – handy if you teach on multiple online platforms, or if you decide to revise your content. Bring a copy of a PowerPoint lecture, and we will upload together. Or feel free to borrow one of mine. Students can have 24-hour online access. Students and faculty love Slideshare!

1:00 - 2:00 pm Digital Immigrants: Rethinking Online Instruction for Digital Natives HLRC-4E

Holly Bailey-Hofmann | Teaching & the Classroom“Digital Immigrant teachers assume that learners are the same as they have always been, and that the same methods that worked for the teachers when they were students will work for their students now. But that assumption is no longer valid” (Prensky, 2001). According to Mark Prensky, anyone born before 1981 is a “digital immigrant” while Gen Y and Gen Z are digital natives—they think “in digital.” At this session, take (private) inventory of your own online instruction, and examine how your online course may be influenced by your generational orientation to technology. Learn about resources we can use to assimilate our online instruction into the digital age. Taught by a digital immigrant!

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 20

9:00 - 10:00 am Managing Security in Your Digitally Interconnected World Webinar

Dr. Jan Vanderpool | Technology & the ClassroomThe past few years have seen a dramatic rise in the extent to which we as a society have become more and more interconnected in our business, personal and family lives. Valuable and often very private information is stored by and about us in databases scattered throughout the planet. We are connected to our information through the Internet, our business networks or LANS, our home networks and our mobile devices. We access our information through what are known as end-points and these could be your office or home desktop, your connected laptop or tablet device or even your WiFi connected smartphone - each given relative carte blanche access to your sensitive data. This workshop will guide participants in ways to examine their own security vulnerabilities and secure unprotected endpoints against unwanted intrusion.

Access the webinar at www.cccconfer.org.  To access the audio portion of the webinar to ask questions if you do not have a computer microphone, call (888) 886-3951 and enter PHONE ACCESS CODE: 962856. See login directions on page 3.

10:15 - 11:15 am Project-based/Program-based Teaching and Learning Strategies Webinar

Dr. Jan Vanderpool | Teaching & LearningIn this workshop, attendees will be introduced to tips and techniques that incorporate project based learning and problem based learning exercises into an online or classroom learning environment. As both of these learning models involve participative and collaborative student work and promote high levels of critical thinking, discussions will include strategies to promote collaboration geared to the unique community college demographic. Strategies to overcome time constraints, varied interest, dissimilar education/experience levels and other barriers to successful collaborative efforts will also be explored.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 27

9:00 - 10:00 am Constructing Assessments to Measure Student's Critical Thinking Webinar

Dr. Jan Vanderpool | Digital CampusThere has been a great deal of conversation within and outside of the academic community concerning American students' apparent lack of critical thinking skills. Teaching to the bubble test has become the norm but this often fails to accurately measure cognitive development in subject areas. This is especially true when assessing student mastery in the critical thinking areas of Bloom’s ostensible cognitive domain. In this brief workshop, we will explore a few tips and techniques that may offer a better understanding of student subject mastery in the taxonomical areas of Applying, Analyzing, Evaluating and Creating.
