For 100 years, Temple Gol Club has provided both members and visitors with a world

o character, inspiration and unparalleled natural beauty.

The chalk downland course was designed by the 1887 and 1889 Open Champion

Willie Park Junior and to this day the spirit o his original course layout is maintained.

Temple is a highly rated all year round golng venue enjoying magnicent panoramic

views over the River Thames and Chiltern Hills. The backdrop to the 1st tee is simply

breathtaking.

Predominantly built on chalk, the course drains very well and is renowned or beingperectly playable in all but the very worst o weather conditions with winter greens

and tees rarely used.

Conveniently located about 20 minutes rom Heathrow in a triangle ormed by Henley

on Thames, Marlow and Maidenhead, Temple is within just a ew miles o both the M4

Club History

The Club was ormed in 1909 by Captain G MacDonald o The Guards Club in

Maidenhead along with a number o other ocers and local gentry. Land wasleased rom the estates o Bisham Abbey and Temple Park and Willie Park Junior was

commissioned to design and build the course which opened or play in May 1910.

In 1912 Louis Oppenheimer was invited to join the Board o Directors so starting

the long and continuing association between the Oppenheimer Family and

Temple Gol Club.

Raymond Oppenheimer joined Temple as a junior towards the end o the Great War.

By the age o 16 his handicap was down to scratch and he went on to become one

o Englands oremost amateur golers, captaining his country during the period1947 - 1951. Raymond Oppenheimers single biggest golng achievement was

being appointed Captain o the GB & Ireland Walker Cup team in 1951 . He was one

o those responsible or launching the Gol Foundation in 1952, a body that has

done so much to promote gol amongst the young ever since. Through Raymond

Oppenheimers involvement in the great game, many o Britains nest amateur

golers regularly requented Temple during the late orties, ties and sixties. Oten

a Raymond Oppenheimer Select Team would be ormed to play the Walker Cup

team o the day in practice weekends held at Temple. During his lietime, Raymond

Oppenheimer was riends with many o the games greatest players including Sam

Snead, Peter Thompson, Bobby Locke, Roger and Joyce Wethered, Bobby Jones and

Molly Gourlay and consequently many o them played at Temple. Molly Gourlay won

the Temple Ladies Open in 1922 and went on to represent Great Britain in many

international matches including the rst Curtis Cup match at Wentworth in 1932.

Club History Continued...

He also took a close interest in the career o Henry Cotton who was appointed as

the Proessional at Temple in 1954. Raymond Oppenheimer was elected Presidento Temple in 1956 and served in that capacity until his death in 1984. Raymonds

nephew Nicky is the current President and takes a keen interest in the Clubs aairs.

The towering gure o Henry Cotton, or Sir Henry as he became a ew days ater

his death on 22nd December 1987, was the master o British Gol or ve decades.

He was Open Champion three times, a journalist writing all his own copy, author o

many books, a keen photographer, gol course architect and designer and a great

teacher and supporter o young golers.

From the very beginning, well known aces have been seen at Temple including

actors Sir Laurence Olivier, Spencer Tracey, James Stewart, James Mason, aviators

Amy Johnston and Guy Gibson, Prince Bernhard and Queen Wilhelmina o the

Netherlands and so the list goes on.

Temple also has a long tradition o hosting Celebrity gol events in aid o charity. As early

as 1952, a challenge match was held between Bing Crosby and Bob Hope representing

America and Ted Ray and Donald Peers representing Great Britain. This special match

attracted huge crowds as did an exhibition round played by Greg Norman in the 1980s.

More recently, some o Britains best-loved stars o sport and entertainment including

Sir Michael Parkinson, Tim Brooke-Taylor, Laurie Holloway, Michael Barratt, Kenny Lynch,

Terry Wogan, Sir Henry Cooper, Jimmy Tarbuck, Peter Cook, Ray Clemence, Bernard

Cribbins, Jeremy Bates, Jimmy Hill, John Conteh, Gary Lineker, Rachael Heyhoe-Flint,

Dennis Waterman, Alan Hansen and many, many more have turned out on a number o

occasions to play in the Temple Celebrity Amateur Gol Tournament.

About the Course

Standing on the 1st tee, the Thames Valley spreads out beore you and with Bisham,

Marlow and the River Thames shimmering in the distance, you know there issomething special about this course. The 1st hole, a spectacular Par 4 drop hole,

leads you to an undulating course with beautiul views throughout the round. The

8th is another stunning hole, this time a Par 3 which takes you down to the lowest

point o the course. From there you start to gently wind your way back up to the

Clubhouse.

This 6210 yard, Par 70 course remains true to its original design and has many special

holes which provide challenges to golers o all abilities. The 10th, or example, is a

long Par 3 with a hidden green sunk into a bowl and is listed amongst The Top 100Most Unusual Gol Holes in the United Kingdom.

Whatever the season, the course always has something very special to oer.

Spring has its many shades o green as the leaves burst into lie. Summer brings a

stunning myriad o colour with the wild fowers including several rare species o

wild orchids in ull bloom. Autumn, is utterly spectacular with the varying russet

shades o the countless specimen trees on the course, creating a simply stunning

backdrop and due to the act that it is built on chalk, the course is an excellent

winter golng venue.

Take the Course Tour

The ollowing course tour provides an insight into how best to play and navigate

the course.

The 1st Hole - 381 yards - Par 4

This drop hole is undoubtedly one o the most spectacular opening holes in the

southern counties with panoramic views over Marlow, the Thames Valley and the

Chilterns beyond.

The 2nd Hole - 425 yards - Par 4

A long and very testing par 4, well worthy o its low stroke index. Many golers treat

this as a par 5, which it is or ladies, and are happy to walk o with a 5 on their card.

The 3rd Hole - 364 yards - Par 4

Probably one o the most dicult second shots on the gol course but one that i

executed well should yield a birdie opportunity. The well contoured green has a

very narrow entrance and is protected by greenside bunkers let and right.

The 4th Hole - 509 yards - Par 5

A straightorward par 5 but airway bunkers and strategically placed copses o trees

will catch wayward shots.


Take care not to be ooled by this relatively short par 3. Finding, and staying on,

the putting surace, requires some thought. The green is well bunkered and slopes

down rom ront to back. A ball landing short o the slope in ront o the green is

unlikely to run up onto the putting surace.

Take the Course Tour Continued...


When viewed rom the white tee, copses o trees on either side o the airway

combined with rough on the right-hand side o the hole give the impression o aairly narrow landing area. However, rom the yellow and red tees the driving area

seems much more inviting. Once the airway has been ound, most golers will be

let with a mid to short iron approach to a severely contoured green which slopes

down rom ront to back and right to let.


A slight right to let dog-leg hole although the camber o the airway is in the

opposite direction which makes or a challenging tee shot. It is dicult to avoid a

sloping lie or your second shot but you will have rewarding views over the ThamesValley rom Hurley to Harleyord. Two putts rom anywhere on this green represent

a good result.


As you approach the tee or this longish, downhill and picturesque par 3, you will

have a wonderul view over rolling wooded hills, a vista that has hardly changed

during the 100 years o the Clubs existence.

The 9th Hole - 513 yards - Par 5 (4)

A testing par 5 rom the competition and ladies tees. From the yellow tees the hole

is played as a Par 4, the longest on the course at 434 yards. A great gol hole that

should be played with the head rather than the heart. Although longer hitters can

get up in two, the reward is seldom worth the risk. With dense woodland on both

sides o the hole and a airway which slopes down rom right to let along the entire

length o the hole, the 9th represents a real test o gol.

A very unusual and airly tough par 3 in that the green is completely hidden in a

deep hollow probably ormed by an old chalk well. Beware o the greenside bunkerlurking at the bottom o the hollow on the let-hand side o the green and the

subtle contours which can make putting a modicum tricky.


A blind tee shot represents the start point or this long and searching par 4. Do

not be too greedy here as there is an Out o Bounds hazard on the let o the hole

whilst deep meadow rough lies in wait on the right. The likely mid iron approach

is to a dicult reverse two tiered and raised green with a very steep bank rising o

the back.


The last o three par 5s on the mens card (there are ve or ladies), the 12th is

probably the simplest o the three and thus represents the most realistic birdie

opportunity. The hole looks inviting rom the tee and the airway is airly generous.

Potentially a dicult green and two putts here is a good return.


This is a short hole, playing uphill rom the tee. Beware the woods close to the back

o the green but i you can nd the green the putting surace is one o the fatter

ones on the course.

An accurate rather than long tee shot is the key to this hole which dog legs slightly

to the right with a two-tier green that is well guarded by trees and bunkers.


This interesting par 4 slopes rom right to let ending with a airly fat green but with

urther hazards to its let. As the ground runs rom the right to let, an approach shot

aimed to the right o the green will normally work well.


Turning or home this is the third 200 plus yard par 3 or the men but a airly straight

orward short par 4 or ladies. It has a very well bunkered entrance leading to a longreverse two-tiered green.


This is a tough driving hole as it doglegs let with a blind tee shot. At average driving

length the ground alls sharply rom let to right and a tee shot too ar to the right

will come to rest either in meadow rough or under the overhanging branches o a

strategically located Beech tree. Even a well placed tee shot leaves an exacting second

to an elevated green protected by humps, hollows, steep slopes and overhanging

branches to the right and sizeable bunker to the let. A bogey 5 is a good score here.


The Clubhouse beckons but rst a tempting and potentially rewarding par 4 needs

to be negotiated. Remain cautious o the meadow rough to the right o the hole

and beware o the two tiered green, this time not ront to back but with a ridge

running the length o the putting surace and a step down rom let to right. A

gentle nishing hole that produces more birdies than any other on the course.

A relatively small club in terms o membership gives Temple two huge benets.

Firstly, the relaxed and riendly atmosphere where everybody tends to know

everybody else and secondly access to the gol course is very good all year round.Temple has a wide range o membership packages to suit all needs:

Full Membership

To become a Full member we do ask that you have an ocial handicap o 24 (gents)

and 36 (ladies). However, i you do not have an ocial handicap or it has lapsed, dont

despair, we can help you to achieve one.

Ideally new applicants should have existing members to Propose and Second their

applications but i you do not know an existing member, a letter o introduction

rom a past or present club may be acceptable in support o your application ormembership. I neither o these options is possible then we will arrange or an inormal

playing-in round with one or two members o the Membership Committee.

Restricted Full (Weekdays plus Weekend Afternoons) or Weekday Membership

These categories are or those who do not require seven day access to the course.

The handicap requirement or this category o membership is 28 or men and 36 or

ladies but again we can help you achieve a handicap i necessary.

As well as providing access to the course, clubhouse and practice acilities; Full,

Restricted Full and Weekday membership include some tremendous value or

money added benets. Temple is a member o the 1909 Club and members o

Temple may play at other 1909 clubs by prior arrangement on a courtesy basis. The

Club also participates in the County Card Scheme which provides discounted green

ees at nearly 1,000 gol clubs throughout the UK. Temple also has some individual

reciprocal arrangements with selected gol clubs in England. In addition the Club

teams so there is ample opportunity or all members who wish to represent the

Club both home and away.

Associate Membership

Are you short o time? Perhaps you have a young amily or work long hours. I you would

like to be part o a members club but do not eel you can commit to the Club as a Full

member at the moment, then why not consider our Associate Membership category

which has a low base subscription with a subsidised green ee payable each time that

Coaching programmes are available to teach complete beginners all the skillsnecessary to take to the course. There is a wide range o junior competitions or all

levels and abilities and the junior handicapping system is used to measure your

The Junior Section plays inter-club riendly matches and participates in the Chiltern

Junior League. Once an ocial handicap is gained you can also enter main Club

The golcourse is beautiully situated in unspoilt landscape and enjoys extensive panoramic

views overlooking the River Thames and Chilterns beyond.

6,210 yards in length and with a Par o 70, the gol course is laid out on chalkdownland and hence is ree draining and less aected by adverse weatherconditions than many others. The course is undulating but not unduly tiring andthe layout is both challenging and interesting, dicult enough to test the lowhandicap player but riendly enough to encourage those with higher handicaps

and on no two consecutive days are golng conditions the same.

The Clubhouse is charming, attractive and comortable and the Club prides itselon providing a riendly and ecient service in a relaxed atmosphere and convivialsurroundings.

We have a range o society packages to suit all pockets. Summer packages

(1 Apr 31 Oct) are priced between 61 and 80 per person and there are someexceptional value or money winter deals with prices rom an incredible 30 perperson. Teaching

The Head Proessional at Temple Club has built a recognised teaching academy

which provides coaching to golers o all abilities and ages. The Temple philosophyto teaching has always been to help pupils understand their own swings and be

able to analyse situations better themselves on or o the gol course. In addition,

the Clubs PGA Proessionals are able to oer advice on gol tness including

inormation on gol muscle groups and training exercises designed to promote

fexibility and improve core strength.

Communication o swing analysis, whether basic or advanced, packaged in an

enjoyable and un learning session and set in picturesque and tranquil surroundings

has and will always be our aim at Temple Gol Club. The benets to the pupil are

huge. Not only will they have a better understanding o swing technique but will

also appreciate the importance o swing exercises and be able to track their progress

rom one session to the next.

Temple has a very good reputation or coaching youngsters o all ages and or

introducing Teeny Templers to gol.

My third year at Chelsea, again a great experience and

again a silver-gilt medal! The BCA Wild and Wonderful

courtyard garden was delightful and much appreciated by

the visitors. The garden was very attractive to wildlife, with

many bees and butterflies - also we had a field mouse move

in shortly after planting. I dont know what we would have

done if bats had moved into the bat boxes?

The Clubhouse

Built in 1909, the Clubhouse retains much o its original character and provides a

cosy atmosphere in which members and guests can enjoy a drink or a great meal

while taking in the spectacular panoramic view over the course and beyond.

The Clubhouse oers great comort and a welcoming atmosphere to socialise and

relax either beore or ater a round o gol. Customers can opt or the traditional

atmosphere o the Dining Room, the relaxed Bar area or the spacious Sun Lounge

where one can gather with riends to enjoy a casual lunch or aternoon tea whilst

looking out over the 18th green.

The main Bar oers a wide range o drinks including well kept local real ales and

a careully selected wine list. Members receive a 20% discount on all bar and

catering prices.
