    Locating the building

    Global context

The BCA academy is in Singapore which is an East Asian, island nation that

sits just 1.1degrees north of the equator and 1 !." degrees east. Thefollowing maps are pro#ided from #arious sources to show the location ofthe $uilding in a glo$al, national and local scale. The $uilding is mar%ed in&ed and the image sources are shown $eneath.

    Campus context

Two major roads, $ound the BCA academy each of : lanes, to the east andsouth, a rail depot to the north, and a canal to the west $eyond these arecom$inations of light industrial and residential $uildings including a schoolto the south west.

5ithin the Campus the $uilding for which we are concerned forms part ofone side to a * shaped courtyard. (t is east;west orientated and has similarscale $uildings close to it to the north and to the south. The orientation ofthe $uilding is not such that it ma%es the most of the pre#ailing winds for#entilation as the pre#ailing winds are from northeast and southwest.

good lighting when not under direct sunlight and protect from intensesunlight when under direct sunlight.

Immobile solar shading also continues to $e used. (n addition to thetraditional porticoes o#erhanging roofs and #erandas immo$ile lou#ers,$alconies and solid planar window shades are used to protect from solargains. These are useful for protecting windows against solar gains. Thereis already an access corridor and stairwell on each oor on the east side of the $uilding which protects from some of the morning sun. (n the BCA$uilding it may $e useful to install static shading o#er all #ertical windows.

This is all that would $e necessary on north and south facing windows topre#ent any direct solar radiation from penetrating them.

    entilation

Solar assisted stac! ventilation uses a dou$le s%in roof the outer layerof which transforms solar radiation into thermal energy to heat air anddri#e a stac% eNect #entilation system. (t is ena$les use of stac%#entilation where the eIternal temperature is higher than internal as itcreates an intermediary Qone where internal eItract air is heated $eyondthe eIternal air temperature which creates a suction eNect drawing upmore of the cooled internal air. The upper roof is either made of highlya$sor$ent material or can $e made of solar panels, which generate asuRcient amount of thermal energy.

(n the case of the BCA academy this could $e used to dri#e some degreeof natural #entilation howe#er air conditioning would still $e required dueto the high humidity of air in Singapore therefore it may not $eappropriate to use natural #entilation strategies at all.

    Smart gla"ing

#lectrochromic glass protects from solar gains $y changing opacity inreaction to the intensity of solar radiation upon it. (t pro#ides an

alternati#e to shutters that requires no eIternal control. (t is howe#er acompara$ly eIpensi#e so may or may not $e appropriate to use in a$uilding of the BCA academy9s scale.

careful where the re ected light (s headed. This is appropriate to the BCAacademy $uilding due to the high intensity of solar radiation in Singapore.

$ind catchers are a component used in hot climates to pro#ide natural#entilation. They are roof3 tower mounted collectors that draw fresh air

from a$o#e into the $uilding #ia ducts into the $uilding. The system isdri#en $y wind pressure and is therefore limited on still hot days. Thesystem can $e com$ined with a heat eIchanger3 thermally massi#e airinta%e or shallow water pools at the supply location to passi#ely cool theair. owe#er the latter of these is not useful in a hot humid climate suchas Singapore.

5ind catchers can $e enhanced with solar dri#en fans and can $ecom$ined if needed with stac%3solar chimney systems. All of theseenhance the eNecti#eness of such systems.

Solar shading protects $uildings from one of the most architecturally

predicta$le and counter a$le sources of $uilding heat gains; solarradiation. By shading windows from the direct light of the sun one cansigniHcantly reduce the solar radiation heat gains permitted $y a window.

This strategy is appropriate in oRces e#en in temperate climates so in thehot humid and sunny Singaporean climate where minimising gains are ane#en greater concern.
