When two become one

When two peop le meet and the re i s tha t mag ica l long gaze , fo l lowed by

a phys ica l spark , and one o f you makes tha t f i r s t s tep to ask the o ther

ou t on a da te , the jou rney o f cour tsh ip beg ins . For some, th i s i s a long

per iod o f f l i r t i ng and ge t t ing to know one another, exp lo r ing shared in te r-

es ts and common ground. Tender embraces , cand le l i t d inners , more long

gaz ing in to each o ther ’s eyes , and eventua l l y a mar r i age p roposa l l ead ing

to a new chapte r o f commi tment .

For o thers , the t rans i t ion be tween meet ing and popp ing the ques t ion , i s

much sw i f te r. There a re many s to r ies o f “ love a t f i r s t s igh t ” , o r “ I knew

immed ia te l y she was the one” . Rac ing hear tbeats and ear l y dec la ra t ions

o f eve r las t ing love a re in fac t much more common than we th ink . Yes ,

phys ica l romance can wane, bu t fo r the most par t , many happ i l y mar r i ed

peop le over the age o f 60 w i l l t e l l you w i th a w ink , “We knew s t ra igh t

away we had met The One” .

“What i s impor tan t fo r young peop le to rea l i se , and we te l l ou r g rand-

aged 68 . F rom the f i r s t moment he and Madd ie met a t a cous in ’s wedd ing

they wanted to spend every moment in each o ther ’s company. The e f fec ts

CONFETTI CHICKS: How d id you get in to the indust ry?

ELMARI : Search ing fo r my own wedd ing d ress , I j us t cou ldn ’t ge t enough o f

the gorgeous d resses tha t a re ava i l ab le to b r ides nowadays , and I t r i ed on over

TH IRTY dresses myse l f (NOT recommended! ) . I soon rea l i zed tha t even though

I had ac tua l l y found THE ONE on DAY ONE o f my search , I j us t loved the who le

exper ience and tha t was why I kept t r y ing on a l l those d resses ! So , need less

to say, soon a f te r re tu r n ing f rom honeymoon the “gears” s ta r t i ng tu r n ing and

s low ly bu t su re l y the bout ique s ta r ted tak ing shape.

What do you en joy most about the wedding indust ry?

Be ing par t o f the B IG DAYs o f so many gorgeous b r ides – i t i s an indus t ry tha t

i s (genera l l y ) fu l l o f joy and smi les , and I ge t to share in i t !

What have been your greatest lessons that you have learned about

your t rade?

I rea l i zed th i s l esson when I was search ing fo r my dress , and i t may sound l i ke

a c l i ché , bu t i n the wedd ing indus t ry we a re dea l ing w i th rea l i z ing the d reams

tha t the ma jo r i t y o f b r ides have had s ince they were 4 years o ld . As a se rv ice

p rov ide r I need to a lways remember tha t th i s i s eve ry b r ide ’s “ONE” d ress , he r

“ONE” wedd ing and i t i s my respons ib i l i t y to make my par t o f he r jou rney as

spec ia l and memorab le as poss ib le .

recommend s ta r t i ng c lose to home, and then ventu r ing fu r the r ou t . Purchas-

ing your d ress f rom a b r ida l bout ique tha t i s conven ien t l y loca ted ( i . e . c lose to

home or work ) i s f i r s t p r i ze , and w i l l save you a lo t o f t rave l i ng t ime when i t ’s

t ime fo r your a l te ra t ions appo in tments .

S ta r t ea r l y ! Many gowns take 4 to 5 months to a r r i ve a f te r o rder p lacement

and once i t a r r i ves you s t i l l have to fac to r i n su f f i c ien t t ime fo r a l te ra t ions , ac-

cessor i s ing , e tc . And, even though most bout iques have the opt ion o f rush ing

your o rder, th i s i s bound to add add i t iona l s t ress to your a l ready end less l i s t

o f wedd ing p ressures – do yourse l f a favour and ra ther p lace your o rder w i th a

month o r two to spare . In my op in ion the idea l l ead t ime i s 6 to 7 months .

Keep your “d ress-search-c rew” as sma l l as poss ib le – too many d i f f e ren t

What gives you the greatest excitement and joy about weddings?

Too much to ment ion , bu t i f I had to choose (and I ’m go ing to be b iased ) i t i s

tha t moment when the b r ide rea l i zes she ’s found her d ress – I ge t goosebumps

every t ime, and I ’ ve even shed some tea rs w i th the b r ides and the i r moms – i t ’s

j us t such a spec ia l moment .

What has been your greatest wedding memory or exper ience?

My own wedd ing o f course… The who le jou rney, f rom search ing fo r our venue ,

to wa lk ing down the a i s le towards my handsome hubby. . . to our f i na l dance a t

the end o f a wonder fu l day.

I t a l l s ta r ted in my paren ts ’ ga rden on our fami l y fa rm in the Eas te rn F ree

Sta te , my mother p ick ing f lowers and a r rang ing them ins ide the house . In my

las t years a t schoo l I worked in a loca l f l o r i s t owned by two wonder fu l f l o ra l

a r t i s ts . I s tud ied f i ne a r ts , and a fe l l ow s tudent f r i end and her mom d id f low-

ers fo r wedd ings . A f te r I comp le ted my s tud ies I went abroad to ga in exper i -

ence f rom other f l o r i s ts . I l i ved in London fo r fou r years and worked in a few

d i f f e ren t f l ower shops , i nc lud ing w i th a wonder fu l f l o r i s t l ady Jude Roberson .

w i th in , tapp ing in to one ’s own c rea t i v i t y shaped by exper ience and observa-

t ions and in te rp re t ing a spec i f i c b r ie f w i th a f resh approach. I l ove a r t , des ign ,

CONFETTI CHICKS: Your work is astounding, yet you s tar ted Lu lube l le ’s

Bakes just three years ago. Te l l us about th is learn ing curve and what i t

has meant for you and your fami ly.

LYNDSAY: Yes ! Three years ago on the 22nd January 2014 my l i f e s ta r ted

to change fo rever. I ’d been a conveyanc ing secre ta ry fo r over 20 years and

then had worked as a PA to a deve loper fo r 6 years and the las t 7 years I

had worked as a p roper ty manager and managed proper ty a l l a round South

A f r i ca . I t was in December 2013 when my son (who i s an amaz ing an imator )

sugges ted we make the Chr i s tmas decora t ions fo r the one and on ly cake I

baked annua l l y and tha t was the fami l y ’s Chr i s tmas cake .

So o f f I went to buy some “p las t i c ” i c ing as I knew i t then . I had no c lue

what I was do ing o r what too ls o r i ng red ien ts I shou ld be us ing and my f igu-

r ines d idn ’t work ou t a t a l l . Th is then insp i red me to want to l ea rn a l l about

cakes and decora t ing , so I s ta r ted my f i r s t cake decora t ing lesson the 22nd

January 2014. I t to ta l l y took me, and my fami l y, by su rpr i se – espec ia l l y my

husband who cou ldn ’t unders tand why I ’d work a l l day and then come home

a t n igh t and work t i l l the ea r l y hours o f the morn ing on a cake ! I l oved a l l

s i x l essons and f rom tha t moment on a l l I wanted to do was decora te cakes !

Ruff les Cake

By my th i rd l esson, my daughte r s ta r ted up a Facebook page fo r

“Lu lube l l e ’s Bakes” – tha t f i r s t n igh t I h i t 100 l i kes . I was over the moon !

Th ree years l a te r I have over 34 ,500 Facebook fo l lowers , and a lso have fo l -

lowers on Ins tagram and Tw i t te r – i t ’s no t about the “ l i kes” o r the “ fo l low-

ers” on these pages – i t ’s a l l about the love l y peop le ou t the re who en joy

see ing my c rea t ions and the i r words o f encouragement . W i thout them and

my fami l y ’s suppor t , I wou ld never, EVER, have d reamt tha t one day I wou ld

be runn ing my own bus iness . In June 2014 I was re t renched, and I took th i s

as a s ign and tu r ned those lemons in to l emonade ! I took the f i r s t huge s tep

towards runn ing my own bakery.

My husband even renovated my k i tchen to accommodate a fu l l -on bakery ;

my daughte r i s a wedd ing photographer and we o f ten work together on wed-

d ings ; my son , the an imator, has been my r igh t hand man when i t comes to

mak ing cake toppers and my youngest daughte r i s a lways the re to encourage

me on my cakes . They have a l l been so suppor t i ve to a w i fe and mum who

had a p ro fess iona l o f f i ce job fo r over 30 years and who now is a baker and

works f rom home a l l day !

What do you en joy most about the wedding indust ry… and what g ives

you the greatest exc i tement and joy?

Wedd ings a re such a joy fu l t ime in one ’s l i f e and I abso lu te l y LOVE do ing

wedd ing cakes . I l ove meet ing the coup les – whether i t ’s j us t fo r a consu l -

ta t ion o r a wedd ing tas t ing sess ion . I l ove go ing to the venues , see ing a l l

the s tunn ing décor, and se t t ing up my cakes wh ich usua l l y a re the cent re o f

What have been your greatest lessons that you have learned about

your t rade?

be con f ident i n myse l f and to t rus t myse l f to be ab le to do what my c l i en ts

want me to do . Go ing in to th i s t rade f rom scra tch l i t e ra l l y took me by su r-

p r i se and I ve ry qu ick l y had to f i nd tha t i nner con f idence w i th in myse l f .

What adv ice do you have for c l ients in terms of them choos ing the i r

wedding cake?

I a lways ask my c l i en ts whether they want a s l i ce fo r each gues t , whether

they want the cake more fo r the look , o r whether i t ’s par t o f a sweet tab le .

Many coup les want a 3 o r 4 t i e r cake but they don’t want a l l the l e f t ove rs .

What I l i ke to suggest to them is to s t i l l go fo r the look but i ns tead o f each

t i e r be ing cake , we add a “ fake” cake t i e r i n be tween wh ich i s decora ted

exact l y l i ke the cake and you rea l l y can ’t te l l the d i f f e rence . So many peop le

don’t know about th i s opt ion and i t such a good idea – no t a lways a cheaper

idea as the re i s s t i l l the same amount o f work be ing done on the fake t i e r as

a norma l t i e r bu t i t i s a b i t more cos t e f fec t i ve .

What has been your greatest wedding memory?

Oh, the re a re a few, bu t p robab ly one o f my g rea tes t wedd ings was one I

d id fo r a s tunn ing coup le who worked fo r an in te r na t iona l a i r l i ne and l i ve in

Duba i . The i r venue was qu i te a d r i ve f rom my home so my husband and I

s tayed a t a nearby hote l tha t n igh t , bu t the cake was one o f my f i r s t i n t r i ca te

cakes . As they were both a i r c rew, they had t rave l l ed the wor ld and I had to

pu t the wor ld map on the m idd le t i e r. There was a baker in Aus t ra l i a who

had made a ve ry s im i l a r cake so I wro te to he r fo r adv ice . She got back to

me ve ry qu ick l y and gave me some t ips on how to do the cake and I so ap-

prec ia ted th i s adv ice f rom a wor ld renowned cake a r t i s t !

The cake was a huge success and the toppers were made by my son who

d id a g rea t job . Th is love l y coup le have o rdered cakes f rom me on severa l

occas ions when they v i s i t the i r f ami l y he re in Cape Town. I t ’s so n ice to

keep in touch w i th my c l i en ts and now tha t I ’ ve been a round fo r 3 years p lus

I am see ing them a l l qu i te regu la r l y now!

What would you do d i f fe rent ly i f you got marr ied aga in or renewed

your vows?

Def in i te l y won’t be ge t t ing mar r i ed aga in as I ’ ve been happ i l y mar r i ed fo r

32 years th i s month ! But . . . i f we were to renew our vows (wh ich secre t l y i s

someth ing I ’d love to do ) , I ’d pay more a t ten t ion to my cake ! ! I can ’t even

remember the f l avour o r des ign o f my wedd ing cake – how sad i s tha t ! So

much a t ten t ion to de ta i l goes in to wedd ing cakes now and I wou ld love to

have a 5 t i e r cake (w i th some fake t i e rs in be tween to m in im ize l e f t ove rs ! )

remember the event . I t ’s j us t tha t they go to so much t roub le and expense

w i th the i r wedd ing cake tha t eve ryone shou ld see i t and see the i r cake

cu t t ing ce remony.

250 Engagement cook ies , each w i th a s t i ck man propos ing to a s t i ck l ady

– tha t ’s over 500 s t i ck peop le ! ) I guess I can con f ident l y say tha t I can
