A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury that changes the way the brain normally works. A concussion is caused by bump, blow, or jolt to the head or body that causes the head and brain to move rapidly back and forth. Even a “ding,” “getting your bell rung,” or what seems to be a mild bump or blow to the head can be serious.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF CONCUSSION Signs and symptoms of concussion can show up right after the injury or may not appear or be noticed until days or weeks after the injury. If an athlete reports one or more symptoms of concussion listed below after a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or body, s/he must be kept out of play the day of the injury and until a health care professional, experienced in evaluating for concussion, says s/he is symptom free and it’s OK to return to play. uCONCUSSION DANGER SIGNS In rare cases, a dangerous blood clot may form on the brain in a person with a concussion and crowd the brain against the skull. An athlete should receive imme-diate medical attention if after a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or body s/he exhibits any of the following danger signs:

One pupil larger than the other • Convulsions or seizures

Is drowsy or cannot be awakened • Cannot recognize people or places

A headache that not only does not diminish, but gets worse • Becomes increasingly confused, restless, or agitated

Weakness, numbness, or decreased coordination • Has unusual behavior

Repeated vomiting or nausea • Loses consciousness (even a brief loss of consciousness

Slurred speech should be taken seriously) WHY SHOULD AN ATHLETE REPORT THEIR SYMPTOMS? If an athlete has a concussion, his/her brain needs time to heal. While an athlete’s brain is still healing s/he is much more likely to have another concussion. Re-peat concussions can increase the time it takes to recover. In rare cases, repeat concussions in young athletes can result in brain swelling or permanent damage to their brain. They can even be fatal.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IF YOU THINK YOUR ATHLETE HAS A CONCUSSION? If you suspect that an athlete has a concussion, remove the athlete from play and seek medical attention. Do not try to judge the severity of the injury yourself. Keep the athlete out of play the day of the injury and until a health care professional, experienced in evaluating for concussion, says s/he is symptom-free and it’s OK to return to play. Rest is key to helping an athlete recover from a concussion. Exercising or activities that involve a lot of concentration, such as studying, working on the computer, or playing video games, may cause concussion symptoms to reappear or get worse. After a concussion, returning to sports and school is a gradual process that should be carefully managed and monitored by a health care professional.

PARENT/GUARDIAN AGREEMENT STATEMENT I have read and fully understand this information sheet regarding concussions and I agree that if it appears that my child may have sustained a concussion or head injury that he/she is to be removed from any program activity until such time that a trained medical professional can ex-amine him/her and approve their return to play In the activity, pursuant to Section 118.293 Wisconsin Statutes relating to concussions and other head injuries. In such case, I understand that I am to provide a written clearance from a trained medical professional for my child to re-turn to play in the activity. If there are not enough registrants three days before the start of the class–the class will be can-celled. If you see something you like, sign up early. It’s the only way we know if the class will go! Thanks for your coop-eration!

Job Opportunities We are looking for outstanding staff members to join our team! We are continually looking for coaches, instructors, lifeguards, supervisors, officials, and instructors for various programs. Pick up an application at the Recreation Department or download it on-line at www.smrecdept.org. Qualified applicants will be contacted for interviews as openings become available. For more information call 766-5081.

Indoor Walking Enjoy walking indoors during cold or inclement weather throughout the year. Residents pay a one time $5 fee and non-residents pay a $25 annual fee. The indoor track at the Senior High School is normally open from 5:30am—8:45pm Monday-Thursday; from 5:30am—7:45pm on Fridays; and from 7:00am—2:45pm on Saturdays and Sundays. We ask that you present an ID to the staff prior to walking. If you have questions, please call us at 766-5084.

Message to Parents Parents are reminded to pick their children up at the completion time listed for the activity they are participating. Staff are not responsible for participants once their class is completed (they are also not paid to wait for parents who are late in picking up their children). We also ask parents to stress to their children that when they are in a school building they should go directly to their program activity area and not wander around the building. Your cooperation with this is greatly appreciated.

Financial Assistance Those in need of financial assistance should contact the Recreation Department in order that necessary arrangements may be made. As a general rule, those participating in the reduced or free hot lunch program may qualify for a 25% reduced program fees. This does not apply to all programs.

Program Changes All listed program times, instructors, locations, fees, etc. are subject to change.
