Exam 1 Review

• Your first exam will take place on Friday, October 20, during class meeting.

• The exam will cover all information from “What is Modern Art? The Origin of the Avant-Garde” Unit to “Dada” (no Surrealism!) Unit.

• This exam is worth 25% of your overall course grade. Paper will be supplied to you in class; no books, notes, electronic devices, or any other study aids are permitted in the exam. You should be able to complete the exam in 1 hour and 10 minutes, but extra 10 minutes will be allowed if necessary.

• The exam will consist of 3 parts.• A. Short answers. You will be asked to supply the

correct--and correctly spelled!--name, term, or short phrase in response to a series of 10 questions, worth 1 point each for a total of 10 points. The exam will begin with the short answer section. I will give you 8 to 10 minutes to work on this section before turning to the second part of the exam. You can always return to this section later if you need time at the end of the exam period to work on it.

• These short answer questions will be taken from key terms discussed in class (see list below). Misspelled key terms and artists' last names (you don't need to bother with first names) will not receive credit.

• B. Slide Comparison Essay. The second part of the exam will consist of two slide comparisons, taken from a possibility of five pairs of slides (see below). You will have 20 minutes to work on each comparison and should plan to write 1 to 2 pages, skipping lines, in your exam book on each comparison. Each will be worth 15 points, for a total of 30 points.

• The artist, title and date of each image will be fully identified for you. Your task will be to write a clear and coherent essay on each comparison in which you discuss issues of form, subject matter, and the art historical significance of the comparison.

• FOR EACH COMPARISON YOU WILL BE ASKED A QUESTION ABOUT THE COMPARISON, WHICH YOU MUST ADDRESS IN YOUR ESSAY. BE SURE TO READ AND RESPOND TO THE QUESTION CAREFULLY ON THE EXAM.

• C. Single slide essay. The third part of the exam will consist of two single-slide essays, taken from a possibility of 4 slides (see below). You will be asked a specific question, which you must address in your essay. You will have 10 minutes to work on each slide and should plan to write ½ to 1 page, skipping lines, in your exam book on each essay. Each will be worth 10 points, for a total of 20 points on the slide comparisons.
