Crossword Puzzle Contest When did you join TP and what made you stay on? I joined TP in 2007 and time flies when you are enjoying what you do, thus, I would say it has got to be the people at TP (including students) whom made me want to stay on. What does TP mean to you? TP holds a special place in my heart as it has allowed me to develop professionally. Additionally, it helps me grow (horizontally, with all the nice food), and makes me glow (internally, with the kickboxing classes that the Staff Wellness committee has organised). How has TP developed you as a person? The opportunities to be involved in various committees over the years, such as the Campus Care Network (CCN), Open House and Freshmen Orientation, has certainly widened my perspective and made me more adaptable to changes. What is your most memorable moment in TP? There are certainly many memorable moments in TP but if I were to pick one, it has to be the Perak adventure trip when my colleague and I brought a group of students for caving and whitewater rafting activities. It was an excellent time of bonding for us as staff and students and it was exhilarating for all of us to try new things, and get connected with the outdoors. I was impressed with how our students stepped out of their comfort zones and how they grew in confidence and camaraderie from this experience. Can you tell us more about what you do? Apart from teaching, I work very closely with the IIT Studies Club (IITSC) to organize activities for the student body. In fact, we just celebrated Racial Harmony Day where the IITSC members wore cultural costumes and gave out kacang putih to fellow IIT students to celebrate our rich and diverse cultural heritage. These activities are deeply meaningful and add an enriching dimension to student life. What makes graduates of TP unique from other Institutes of Higher Learning (IHL)? TP graduates are professional, spontaneous and adaptable – they have acquired these attributes from the environment they have been nurtured in at TP. What advice do you have for our Alumni? I have always believed that we must stay curious and keep on learning, no matter how old we are. I hope that our Alumni will leverage on the opportunities in Singapore and TP to keep on learning. In fact, TP has many CET (Continuing Education and Training) courses available and I hope our Alumni take some time to check these out. Subsequently coupled with his academic excellence and leadership in TP-ISACA, a CCA he co-founded, Kaiwen was subsequently honoured the Lee Kuan Yew Award in 2012. His many notable wins was a result of a particular advice that propelled him to succeed. His lecturer, Ho Hee Meng, encouraged the young man to strive to be an all rounder and excel in areas beyond his academic too. This prompted Kai Wen to take on leadership positions that will develop him character-wise. As a strong believer in contributing to the society, he asserts that an all-rounder should carry out community projects such as volunteering IT skills, developing applications of use to society at large and raising awareness of IT through organizing related events. Kaiwen’s fondest memory in TP, was the moment he delivered his valedictorian speech. He shared how glad he was to be given the opportunity to say what he felt about his 3 years in poly, the choices he made and what inspired him to carry on. His love for his lecturers is the one thing he misses about his time in TP. Kaiwen praises them for being approachable and friendly. He attributes his successes to them especially those who pointed him in the right direction and gave him precious advice and encouragement. Kaiwen is currently pursing a degree in Information Systems Management at the Singapore Management University on an SMU Scholarship. Natasha Fosters TP Spirit in Students Kaiwen Redefines FB’s Worth To Law Enforcement In February this year Alumnus Teh Kaiwen, 2012 graduate from the Diploma in Cyber & Digital Security, was presented the IT Youth Award 2013 at the Singapore Computer Society Gala Dinner held at Shangri La Hotel. He was honored in the presence of many big names from the IT industry. This award recognizes the outstanding contributions of youths to IT in schools and/or community. However this recognition is not new to this remarkable talent who prior to this achievement has managed to garner a few awards during his studies in Temasek Polytechnic. For his Final Year Major project Kaiwen, inspired by the many stories he has heard and seen about crimes being solved with the aid of Facebook data, invented the Facebook Security & Forensic Toolkit which is a tool for retrieving data from Facebook and presenting it in a visually helpful format which aids law enforcement officers in their crime fighting endeavors. The prototype of the tool has been handed over to a law enforcement agency for their use and is currently being improved by his juniors to include other features. This innovation has gained him many accolades from the IT industry. He was awarded the Silver Medal in the Tan Kah Kee Young Inventors’ Award. Know any Alumnus or Staff worth featuring? Elmore Inspires GEN iY Educators & Leaders Dr. Tim Elmore, best selling author and world-renown guru on leadership, was invited to Temasek Polytechnic for the 7th Character & Leadership Education Forum from 11th to 12th July 2013. The forum was organized by Temasek Polytechnic’s Centre for Character and Leadership Education (CCLE) department. For two exciting days staff, educators from TP and various schools and the industry were mesmerized by this charismatic speaker who used principles, images and stories to strengthen the skills of leaders dealing with youths from generation iY– youths with growing individualistic desires and overexposed to information at an earlier age. A special session was also organized for our student leaders to hear from Dr. Elmore too. The leadership expert inspired the audiences with his insights on the vitality of transforming artificial maturity into authentic maturity. Attendees were given tips and advice on how to build fundamentals such as emotional intelligence, character, strength discovery and leadership to help them nurture youths to meet the challenges of becoming adults.
