#PE 40 - low pressure piping systems

#PE 63 - medium pressure systems, irrigation system,

drinking water connection

#PE 80 - gas pipe for the distribution network of

natural gas with pressure rate up to 4 bars,

drinking water pipe with pressure rate up to

16 bars, sewers & outfall pipes

#PE 100 - suitable for high demands of piping applications

* 1 bar = 10 Pa (N/m²)(Mpa) = 14.50 psi (lb./in²)

With its unique characteristics, HPDE is dened by

a density of greater or equal to 0.941g/cc, coupled

with a low degree of branching, and thus stronger

inter-molecular forces and tensile strength.

Because PE pipe is exible, it can be curved

through a radius to make turns, thus avoiding the

complexity and expense of ttings required to

make turns as compared with other types of

piping.

PN 6 Red 6

PN 10 Blue 10

PN 16 Green 16

Pressure Nominal - PN

PE pipes are produced in dierent pressure grades

(PN grades), which indicate the pressure in bars the

pipe can support with water at 20°C. According to

the European Standard of pressure grades with

referencing colour codes could be identied as the

following:

HPDE can be classied by the pressure nominal (PN)

in accordance to the max bar value, or by the

material grade such as PE 100 and PE 80.

High density polyethylene - HDPE - is a very

popular material for water pipes, featuring:

Easy to assemble

Light weight and durable

Low friction

Relative cost eectiveness

Flexibility & convenience

PE pipes are manufactured using the “SDR”method of rating piping pressure. The SDR is the ratio of pipe diameter to wall thickness, which can be expressed as:

SDR = D/s where s D = pipe outside diameter (mm) S = pipe wall thickness (mm)

Hence, a SDR 11 means that the outside diameter “D ” ofthe pipe is eleven times the thickness “s” of the wall. D• With a high SDR ratio, the pipe wall is thin compared to the pipe diameter and vice versa.• As a result, a high SDR pipe has a low pressure rating and low SDR pipe has a high pressure rating.

Color Codes & Materials ClassicationsCommon colors used to identify pipe applications:~ completely black for industrial applications~ completely blue, or black with blue strips for potable water~ completely yellow, or black with yellow strips for gas conduits

The Minimum Required Strength “MRS”according to ISO 4427 for dierent materials:

In order to satisfy the user industry with high performance & tight requirements of HDPE piping system, in addition to innovative design & assembly methods, Gammap persists in providing the user with varieties of jointing systems based on application and economy. An important aspect of a stable piping system relies on the appropriateness and hydraulic tightness of proper joints. The choice of joints provided for installing PE piping system depends on application purpose as well as installation requirements.

An evolution to the traditional thermal fusion & electro fushion types of joint, Gammap now offers a highly efficient and easy assembly type of jointing system up to 315mm nominal diameter. This socket type of connections are tested and comply with international standard, which demonstrates a high efficiency to cope with tight construction programs, that are vastly used by the municipal & provincial governments.

І Thermal fushion - “socket” injected type for small piping connection ranging from dn20 ~ 63mm, spigot or flange type, suitable for above ground and in-house application. Thermal fushion - “butt-welding” type for jointing pipes ≥ 160mm, but also available for flange pipe from dn 90mm ~ 160mm. Those are meant for long distance transfer of potable water with simple network and less branches. Projects that are centralized and the construction area is fitted for utilizing the use of welding machine.

П Rubber Ring joint - “LOC” - for dn32 ~ 200mm and “detachable” - for dn90 ~ 315mm, good for supply of potable water in city areas where the piping networks are complicated.

Ш Electro fusion - the traditional heat fusion type of jointing method that is comparatively more costly. We also have “male & female” RC fittings, flexi compression joints in various type of up to dn 63mm.

Jointing Methods for HDPE Pipes

Various methods in jointing HPDE pipes according to the size and type of application.

The compression type of mechanical jointing which is flexible and for the connection

of smaller OD pipes. Other detachable types are flange joints and our innovative tyton

joints for PE pipes & fittngs. The traditional heat-fused permanent jointing composed

of thermal fusion inject welding, butt welding, and also electric fusion welding.

The Compression Type

JointingClassic Flange

~ For pipe bore size ≤ 63mm, easy to assemble.

Type

The

Flange

~ Conventional type of mechanical jointing which has been widely used for its hydraulic pressure resistent properties denoted by the PN value.

Thermal Fusion

i) Injection Type

~For pipe bore 20mm ≈ 63mm, the ending section from water main to faucet, indoor water supply.

ii) Butt Welding Type

~ The simplest and space-saving jointing method for pipe to pipe or fitting connection commonly used for PE piping system.

Jointing Methods for HDPE Pipes

VorkämpferUNTERSTüTZER

The “Tyton Joint” Connection≈ We adopted the technology of the flexible tyton

joint connecting method that had long been used

for jointing ductile iron piping system, which is

renowned for its efficient & simple application.

≈ Having applied the same technology to PE piping

system not only can save time and labor cost, but

further enhances the effectiveness in assembling

for site applications.

Electric

Fu

sion

The “Electro-fusion” Welding Type

Others: Transition Fittings

≈ These other methods allow joining of plastic to metal pipe.

Transition fittings that are pre-assembled with a segment

of plastic at one end and metal at the other end, which are

tightly sealed with pressure and having a greater tensile

value than that of the plastic pipe part of a system.

An easy yet practical system for jointing HDPE pipes & fittings.

State of the art with the pre-attached resistance wires embe-

ded in the internal surface of an electrofusion coupling. Avail-

able in full range of sizes with nominal diameter > 63mm.

Application Procedures:1) Square and prepare pipe

~ Chamfer the pipe end, remove any scraps, burrs shavings, oil and dirt from the surfaces to be joined.

2) Heated Tool~ Set the heated tool to 200 - 220°C; heated temperature should be set in accordance to wall thickness (mm) of jointing surface.

3) Alignment

~ Exert with minimal pressure during heating process.

~ Alignment time can be justified in accordance to the appropriate bead height. Considerable pressure should be exerted during this phase.

4) Joining

~ Pipes are removed from the heated tool, the molten ends are brought together with sufficient pressure to form a homogeneous joint.

~ The bead size shows the regularity of the weldings. “K” must always be larger than zero.

[ Table on the right illustrates diffrent phases of application ]

5) Cooling

~ The molten joint must be held immobile under pressure until cooled adequately to develop strength.

~ Allowing proper times under pressure for cooling prior to removal from the clamps of the machine is important in achieving joint intergity.

{Diagrams on the right demonstrate the whole application procedures.

Associated values are recommened for thermal butt welding of HDPE

pipes & fitings, at anoutside temperature of 20°C & moderate air flow.}

[ Interim values have to be interpolated ]

[ With reference to the above table

for the value of “K” - the bead height.]
