OISANS, BELLEDONNE, CHARTREUSE, VERCORS: THERE ARE FOUR MOUNTAINS ON THE TERRITORY OFTHE ALPS OF ISÈRE. FOUR MOUNTAINS FROM THE SAME RANGE BUT EACH ONE PROUD OF ITS

SINGULARITIES. LARGE SKIING AREAS? SNOWSHOES? TRANQUILITY? FACILITIES? DEPENDING WHAT KINDOF ACTIVITIES YOU ARE LOOKING FOR AND THE MANNER IN WHICH YOU CHOOSE TO PRACTICE, EACHONE COULD SEDUCE YOU. THE FOUR MOUNTAINS OF ISÈRE HAVE AT LEAST TWO THINGS IN COMMON

THOUGH: CONSERVED NATURE AND BREATHTAKING LANDSCAPES.

MEET THE ALPS OFISÈRE MOUNTAINS

OISANSOisans is the most alpine mountain of Isère, and is inseparable from the two mainresorts it houses. Both among the biggest in France, L'Alpe d'Huez and Les 2Alpes offer incredible conditions that will put a gleam in the eye of any ski fanatic:the longest piste in Europe for L'Alpe d'Huez, the largest skiable glacier for Les 2Alpes and more than 2000 metres of elevation in both cases! But the massif ofOisans is also home to a multitude of village-resorts that will delight you with theirquieter, authentic atmosphere. Most of them are connected to both giants' skidomains and also have their own. These are probably the best base camps fromwhich to explore the wide open spaces of Oisans, starting with the National Parkdes Ecrins, or to experience novel mountain activities!

BELLEDONNEIn the Belledonne massif, sample the delights of the highmountain right outside the gates of the city! The closestresorts are only thirty minutes from Grenoble, making themthe easiest to reach in the Alps of Isère and the French Alps. Here you can also enjoy lakes, prairies... and over 1200 m ofelevation allowing great ski rides, on or off piste (Les 7 Lauxresort for example has gained a reputation for its safe off-piste domain). Another speciality is night skiing(Chamrousse, Le Collet d'Allevard). How about sliding downthe hill with Grenoble city lights at your feet? And if themountain activities have been too harsh on your body, themassif of Belledonne is also home to two famous thermalsprings: Allevard-les-Bains and Uriage-les-Bains.

VERCORSAmong the four massifs in Alps of Isère, Vercors –also known as ‘The Fortress’ - may be the onewith the most natural treasures to offer and theNature Park of Vercors is the biggest in Isère.Providing access to more than 500 kilometres ofruns, Vercors is the place to be for any Nordic skienthusiast. The resorts here have kept theirvillage vibe and are the perfect places to stay ifyou are looking for nature and strong sensations. Its varied landscapes make Vercors a great placefor kite skiing, ski touring or mountaineering. Abit too extreme? Relax, it is also the perfect placefor sledging or snowshoeing.

CHARTREUSEAs an introduction to the massif of Chartreuse, wecan cite the author Stendhal (born in Grenoble) whodescribed it as ‘the emerald of the Alps’. Situated ata lower altitude than the other Isèrian mountains,Chartreuse offers more forests and its territory isfully included in the Chartreuse Nature Park.Although its ski area cannot compete with Oisansin size, ski runs in Chartreuse are known for being‘old school’, as they notably follow natural contoursin the terrain, and are particularly popular amongexperienced skiers. Chartreuse resorts havemaintained a human scale and are probably whereyou can experience authentic mountain life to thehighest degree. A final, but non-negligible asset:yes, this is where Chartreuse liqueur, the mostfamous beverage in the Alps of Isère, is crafted.

When it comes to the best skiingconditions and equipment, ski fanaticsshould look to the two giants of Oisans;l'Alpe d'Huez and Les 2 Alpes. L'Alped'Huez is 1860m high, the skiing area’shighest point - the Pic Blanc - is at

3330m, and five pistes have an altitude difference of 2000metres or more. With the easiest slopes down near the resort, beginners will be right in the action and make the most of theirlearning time. But if you are an experienced skier, you will wantto reach the Pic Blanc, if only to have a go at the mythical piste‘La Sarenne’, the longest black run in Europe at 16km. Whatmakes it difficult is its length, not the degree of the slope, so

just take your time, it would be a shame to miss it. The Alpe d'Huez skiing area has also merged with 6 otherOisans resorts' areas to form the Alpe d'Huez grand domaineSki. This means 250 km of pistes: a huge domain with variousareas, each one with its own style. This also means you canenjoy the best equipment and at the same time the possibilityto reach quieter slopes. With a skiing area between 1650m and 3568m, Les 2 Alpescan rival l'Alpe d'Huez regarding the altitude difference. Theresort is famous for having one of the largest skiing glaciers inEurope! This guarantees permanent snow (you can even ski onthe glacier in summer!) and gives you the chance to ski undera bright alpine sun. Beginners can also enjoy these dreamy

SKIING IS A SERIOUS BUSINESS. OF COURSE IT IS ALL ABOUT FUN. OF COURSE IT IS ABOVE ALL A THRILL. BUT IT ISTHE KIND OF PLEASURE ENJOYED AT ITS BEST WHEN THE IDEAL CONDITIONS ARE IN PLACE. THE ALPS OF ISÈRERESORTS TAKE YOUR ENJOYMENT VERY SERIOUSLY AND THAT IS WHY THEY MAKE A POINT OF PROVIDING THE

conditions as some of the easiestpistes are located on the glacier. Although Les 2 Alpes and l'Alped'Huez are among the most popularski destinations in France, everythingis dedicated to helping you maximizeyour skiing time: fast and efficientlifts, restaurants on the slopes, different access points to the skiingarea... That is also what grand skiingis about.

The massif of Belledonne also offers grandskiing conditions: 250 km of slopes and an altitudedifference up to 1200m. At its highest points, that youwill reach in no time thanks to the state of the art lifts, youcan admire a panoramic view over the Alps. The Belledonneresorts are known to offer large (secure) off-piste areas, whether you go on your own or with a guide. But they alsoform a large network of marked pistes, including the famous‘Casserousse’ in Chamrousse, on which French sport legendJean-Claude Killy won the Olympic gold medal in 1968.

Although Vercors is mainly known fornordic skiing, it also has what it takesto please any alpine skiing amateur. The landscapes here are different tothose in Oisans or Belledonne: you willbe skiing through forests more often, whereas some other areas are muchsteeper and craggier. The overalldifficulty of the pistes is probablylower than in Oisans, but you can still

find some serious black ones, such as the‘Carole Montillet’ piste (former ski champion)

in Villard-de-Lans / Corrençon-en-Vercors,which is the main alpine resort in Vercors with 125

kilometres of runs.

The massif of Chartreuse has another asset for those lookingto experience pure skiing sensations: it is a great ski-touringterritory. The whole mountain turns into a playground andyou can now even find some marked routes. Less equipmentbut fewer limits to your skiing experience: another kind ofgrand skiing.

FAMILY ENJOYMENTProviding both children’s activities and entertainment to beenjoyed together, Alps of Isère really are a great place for afamily holiday. Manyof them have areas for children to have fun and get used tothe snow, such as Col de Marcieu where they can try luging, tubing and snake-gliss all day long. What about the creativeside of things? Well, a snowman contest is held every year inGresse-en-Vercors, and in Col de l'Arzelier younger childrencan learn how to build an igloo! Finally, as you might not wantthem to spend their whole life in the children’s area, your

TODAY'S MENU : THE ALPS OF ISÈRE

One of the most famous Isère dishes is thegratin dauphinois, the original recipe ofwhich is said to be from Autrans / Méaudre-en-Vercors (Vercors massif). Made of slicedpotatoes and cream, it is probably theculinary champion of Alps of Isère, as well as

a very popular dish all over France. If you are looking forsomething even heartier, why not try the ‘farcis de l'Oisans’:bread and leek dumplings, served with potatoes and porkmeat. Another typical mountain dish is the ‘murçon ‘, from thesmall village of La Mure. This is a cooked pork sausage, flavoured with ‘carvi’, a local cumin, and served with potatoes.Highly recommended to gather (or recover) energy before (orafter) a day of skiing! Several cheeses – of course – were alsoborn in the mountains of Isère, starting with Saint-Marcellin,which takes its name from a small village close to the massifof Vercors. Made with cow’s milk, Saint-Marcellin can besavoured hard or with a runnier texture. From Vercors againcomes le Bleu du Vercors-Sassenage, whereas the Tomme deBelledonne originates from higher pastures, with its slighttaste of hazelnut. Talking about nuts, walnuts go perfectly withcheese and good news: the Grenoble Walnut is labeled A.O.C(registered designation of origin)!

You will need a drink to go with these treats. Why not try theIsère wines? A local red wine will perfectly accompany somefarcis, while the white wines, especially Les BalmesDauphinoises, should pleasantly surprise! Then if you needsomething more serious to keep you warm, Isère also has iton offer. A delicious liqueur that even has something sacredabout it... of course we are talking about the famousChartreuse, crafted for centuries by monks in the GrandeChartreuse monastery, using more than 130 local herbs!

Now, if you are tempted by some top-notch French cuisine, the 4-star Chalet Mounier hotel and its restaurant Le P'titPolyte is your best bet. Following the arrival of its Australianchef Matthew Hegarty, Le P'tit Polyte was awarded a Michelinstar last year and has some exquisite dishes on the menu, suchas pan-fried foie gras, duck magret with malt, Saint-Marcellincheesecake or lobster with mango. Bon appétit!

“LE P'TIT POLYTE WAS AWARDED A MICHELIN STAR LAST YEAR

AND HAS SOME EXQUISITE DISHES ON THE MENU.”

One of the main concerns in Villard-Reculashas always been to maintain its oldmountain village atmosphere. No modernbuildings here, but genuine stone and woodchalets. Villard-Reculas agreed to become aski resort, but never forgot the village itused to be. The resort is part of l'Alped'Huez grand domaine Ski and has 250 kmof slopes, as well as numerous originalevents each week: initiation to snowshoeingor drone piloting, yooner, relaxationworkshops... The week’s programme isexplained each Sunday during a welcomedrink! Another unusual event: le Relais desDahuts, in January, is a team race thatcombines ski-touring and trail running!
