Our mission

Our mission is to address the needs and improve the quality of life of Somali Bravanese people

living in London and elsewhere.

Who we are?

The Somali BravaneseWelfare Association in Barnet (SBWA) is a registered Charity, the

registration No. is 1 056856. The association was set up in 1992 principal ly to support the needs of

the Bravanese Community most of whom were refugees escaping war and persecution in Somal i a .

A large number of them are not educated in this country; hence have language difficulties, cultural

differences as well as su ffer ing f rom the scars of their extremely traumatic experiences.

The organisa tion has acted as a 'home' for many where, through th e activities and support services

that i t provides. They are slowly regaining a b it of their life back, which they previously lost.

In recognition of the growing work of the organisation a larger premises has been secured from the

local authority to meet and support needs of the Somali Bravanese commun i ty . T his has in-itself

produced an added challenge to develop and meet growing needs as well as to maximise the

potential of the new facility.

We provide information, advice and guidance on a wide range of issues, as well as support services

aimed at meeting community members' immigrat ion, legal, and welfare, educational, economic,socio-cultural and recreational needs.

Our Service provisions are very diverse and target children and young people, women, men a n d

entire families. We achieved many valuable contributions that we made in promoting the qual ity of

life for Somali Bravanese people.

Obiects of the Charity, principal activities and organisation

1. The Charity's objects are to promote the welfare of all members of the Bravanese

Community where ever they may reside but particularly of those residing in London and

elsewhere by provi d ing for their social, educational and recreational needs.

2. To provide a dvice a nd ass is tance i n rega rd to heal thcare, housing, immigration, Lega l

or a n y othe r issues which may be required.

3. To work towards the improvement of the economic circumstances of Bravanese People

by encouraging the se tt ing up co-operatives or other types of business Enterprises

whether in this country or elsewhere and to p rovi de any advice, Assistance and training

required achieving this objective.

4. To raise awareness of the needs of Bravanese people in London or elsewhere by

liaising with sim ila r o r like minded bodies4-8

Through the dissemination of informat ion in the form of pamphlets, papers or newssheets.

Current Activities and Achievements

a) T he most significant success we had over the past years is that we are expanding in linewith th e needs of our community.

b) We organised peace week with loca l metropolitan police and local residents,

c) We organised a day tr ip to Lego land for more than 100 children and their families.

d) We brought up Somali Bravanese children together and form a football club that wasable to enter into a football tournament and compete with others.

e) Wo rkin g w ith lo ca l counsellor we supported 125 families in relation with housingissue

f) This year we supported 152 families and 104 single in relation with immigrat ion andnationality issues.

g) W e he ld vo luntee r ing workshop in the centre which was based on designing a T-sh ir t, 20

young people h av e ta ke n part in the project.

h) We worked in partnership with Twis t to ru n different workshops, business training a n d

ESOL Skills fo r life at Bravanese centre to inspire ou r community getting the chance tobecome entrepreneur and also help them with English speaking, listing and getting themthe jobs they deserve.

i) So far more than 60 people have been trained and 18 people are awarded w ith E SO Lskills for life level 1 certificate a nd 20 people with ESOL skills fo r life level 2 certificate.

Future Deve lopments

Current ly, there are no dedicated voluntary and community based projects in North Londonwhich solely provide services aimed at addressing the needs of Bravanese people.

This gives us a unique opportunity fo r representing and lobbying on behalf of this communi ty ,

as well as establishing links and developing strong partnership work with mainstream

agencies, publ ic and statutory agencies, as well as with other voluntary organisations.

Our current l inks in Barnet are with agencies such the Police, Primary Care Trusts, GP

Practices, Social Services, Loca l Authorities, Local Education Author i ty and colleges, Barnet

Voluntary Service Council, Barnet Refugee Forum.
