  • IntroductionWelcometoEdenTheologicalSeminary.Eden’scombinationofrigoroustheologicaleducationwithgenuinehospitalityencouragesfaculty,staff,andstudentstohaveclarityaboutdegreerequirements,academicexpectations,andpoliciesweholdincommon.YouwillfindinthisHandbookinformationaboutEden’sMasterandDoctoralprograms,aswellaspoliciesappropriateforallmembersoftheEdenstudentcommunity.

    ChangesinPolicies

    TheinstitutionisobligatedtoprovidethebasicrequirementsnecessaryforfulfillingthedegreeprogramoutlinedintheparticularHandbookfortheyearinwhichastudentmatriculatesintoaprogram.Atthesametime,aHandbookisdynamicinthesensethatpoliciesaresubjecttochangeinanefforttoofferthebestprogramspossibleforthechurch.Changesthathaveanimpactonallstudents,regardlessoftheyearofmatriculation,willbehighlightedonthewebsiteandwillbemadeavailabletostudentsaschangesaremade.

  • StatementonInclusiveLanguageinOurCommonLifeTheologicalVisionEdenTheologicalSeminarystrivestobeaninclusivecommunityoflearningandfaith.GroundedinavisionofGodascreatorinGenesis1:26and2:7inwhichGodcreateshumankind in God’s image and God’s Spirit is breathed into humanity, the Edencommunityhonorsthesacredworth,dignityandequalityofallhumanity—inclusiveofallraces,ages,physicalabilities,gendersandsexualorientations.EdenTheologicalSeminaryaffirms that theBible is the life-giving storyofGod’s redeeming loveandauthority — in and over the community of faith — whose center is Jesus Christ.Wheneverpeopleor institutionsofthewidersocietydiscriminateor injureanotherhumanbeingbasedonrace,age,physicalability,genderorsexualorientationtheysetthemselvesintheplaceofGodandtherebydenyGod’ssovereigntyandtheGraceofGodinJesusChrist.Theologicallyconsidered,suchdiscriminationissinfulbecauseitviolatesGod’ssovereignpurposesforhumanityandcreation.Inthefaceofthis,theChristiancommunityoffaith,ofwhichEdenTheologicalSeminaryisapart,iscalledtohave the courage to standover against any formof discrimination that denies thedignityandsacredworthofeachpersoncreatedinthelikenessandimageofGod.

    InclusiveLanguageAsitstrivestobeaninclusivecommunity,EdenTheologicalSeminaryholdstoapolicytouseinclusivelanguageinreferencestopersonsinallsituations.Specialattentionwillbegiventotheuseofinclusivelanguageinpublicsituations:

    • intheclassroombyfacultyandstudents.• intheEdenChapelandworshipservices.• inofficialpublicationsoftheSeminary,and• inwhichtheuseofsexist(exclusive)languageonpapersandotherwrittenwork

    assignmentswillbecalledtotheattentionofstudents.

    ThecommunitywillendeavortoaddressGodinnondiscriminatorylanguage.

    GuidelinesforGender,Racial&EthnicInclusivityinCommonWorship

    InseekingtoheedthecallofChristtofreedomandunity,weaffirmthatthewayweuselanguageandofferverbalornonverbalimagesisanindicatorofourcommitmenttothefullhumancommunity.Inrecognitionthatlanguageandverbalornon-verbalimageshaveshapingpowerinourlives,andinsolidaritywithallwhostriveforjusticeEdenSeminarycommunitycommitsitselftogender,racialandethnicinclusivityintheworshipofGod.

    SuchinclusivityrevealsmoreofthefullnessofGod’sbeingandaffirmsthatallpersonsareoneinChristJesus.

    GuidelinesforInclusiveLanguageinCommonWorship

    God’speopleofallracesandethnicitiesarewomenandmen,sonsanddaughters,brothers,andsistersoffaith.Exclusiveuseofmasculinegender-specificlanguageandof

  • otherrestrictiveverbalandnon-verbalimagesencourageandperpetuateassumptionsthatcanbetheologicallylimitingandreinforcingofexploitation.Therefore,itisimportanttoexploremoreinclusivewaystorefertoandrepresentthepeopleofGod.

    ThereisneitherJewnorGreek,thereisneitherslavenorfree,thereisneithermalenorfemale;foryouallareoneinChristJesus.(Galatians3:28)

    TheprinciplewhichPauldeclaresisthatouridentityinChristovercomestheolddivisionsthathavesplitapartthehumanrace;divisionsofraceandnationality,ofsocialclass,ofstationinlife,andofgender,andofsexualorientation.InChrist,Paulclaims,allhavebeengivenanewpossibilityforhumanunityinChrist.Asweseektodiscovernewformsofwholeness,wemustworktogethertoliberateourcommonworshipexperiences,sothatworshipopensourvisiontoGod’snewrealityandisinclusiveofallpeople.

    Towardthisend,theCouncilforWorshipofEdenTheologicalSeminaryencouragesattentiontothefollowinginthepreparationandleadershipofCommonWorship:

    A. Itisurgedthatallelementsofworshipwhichoriginatefromtheleader(i.e., prayers, sermons, statements, etc.) be written/presented in aninclusivelanguagestylewhenreferringtohumankind.

    B. Itisurgedthattheworshipleaderprovideaninclusivelanguageversionforallspoken/written/sungelementsfromothersources.

    C. Itisurgedthatnon-verbalimagesbedevelopedandusedwithsensitivitytoissuesofgender,racial,andethnicinclusivity.

    D. Itisurgedthatanyhymnsusedbechangedtomakethepersonlanguageinclusiveandthatimagescontainedthereinbesensitivetoissuesofgender,race,andethnicity:1. Currentresourcesofrevisedhymnwordingsareavailableandmay

    beusedbytheworshipleader.Careshouldbetakenofcopyrightlaws.

    2. Manyhymnsrequireonlyminorchangestobeinclusive.3. Occasionallyrevisionsarenotavailableormaybeimpossiblewithout

    destroyingthepoetryofimageryofthehymn.Insuchinstances,theleadermaymakeanhistoricalcommentbywayofintroductionorsimplyacknowledgethesituationandinvitecongregantstomaketheirowninternaltranslation.

    E. Itisurgedthatworshipincludeandaffirmvarietiesofculturalelementswheneverandwhereverpossible.

    F. Itisurgedthatworshipaddresstheworshipneedsofindividuals,boththosewhoarecomfortablewithtraditionallanguageandthosewhoarenot.

    G. Itisurgedthatlanguageandpracticesusedinworshipattendtochallengingabled-bodyismandseektoaffirmthepresenceofGodinandwithallbodiesintheworshipspace.

    Inclusivityasksusnotmerelytomanipulatewordsandliberateliturgies,buttorethink,toreflecttheologically,onthenamingofaGodinwhoseimagebothwomenandother.

  • AcademicCalendarandCurricularDesignEden'sacademiccalendarfollowsa4-1-4-1designandbuildsuponcohorteducation.StudentsintheMastersprogramstake3-4coursesinthefallandspringsemestersandareeligibletotakeoneintensivethree-hourelectiveinboththeJanuaryandSummertermsinordertomaintainafull-timeload.Additionally,one-hourintensivefocusedLearningSeminars(IFLS)areofferedthroughouttheyeartoenhancecourseofferingsindiverseareasofministryandprovideopportunityforstudentstomaintainafullload.

    Doctoralstudentstakerequiredcoursesoverthecourseofthefallsemester(online)concludedwithaone-weekretreatinthefirstweekofJanuary(oncampus).Electivesareofferedinaweekendintensive(ThursPM-Friday)formatduringthespringsemesterandinthesummerterm.Thesecoursesareheldoncampusandavailableviadistancelearning.

    Eden’sprogramsandcoursesarestructuredinwaysthatseektobuildoncommonexperiencesandcoursesforagroupofstudentswhomatriculateintoaprogramatthesametime.Youwillfindthesecommoncoursesandexpectationsbuiltintothecurriculardesign.Theacademiccalendarforeachyear,alongwithsemestercourseofferings,canbeaccessedonEden’swebsite,BrightspaceandavailableintheOfficeoftheRegistrar.

    ThefallsemesterbeginsthelastweekofAugust(orweekoneofSeptemberlikethisyeartoalignthefollowingdates)andisfourteenweekslonginclusiveofaReadingWeek,normallyscheduledduringtheeighthweekofthesemesterandabreakinclassestheweekofThanksgiving.Finalexaminationsnormallyarescheduledduringthefifteenthweek.TheSchmiechenLecturesoccurnormallyinthebeginningofOctober.Studentsareexpectedtoattendthelecturesandclassesarenotheldduringthelectures.

    TheJanuaryInterimbeginsshortlyafterNewYear’sDay.Masters-levelcoursesarenormallythreeweekslong,whiledoctoral-levelcoursesarescheduledforone-weekintensivesinretreatformat.Mostcoursesmeetdailyinordertomeetthenumberofcontacthoursnecessaryforthreecreditspercourse.ClasseswillnotmeetonMartinLutherKing,Jr.DaywhentheinstitutionhonorsthewitnessofKingbyalsoobservingthisholiday.CreativeusesoftheJanuaryInterimareencouraged.MasterofDivinitystudentsoftenwillhavetheoptionofaJanuarytravelopportunity.Introductorylanguagecourses(GreekandHebrew)areofferedinJanuary.

    ThespringsemesterusuallybeginsoneweekfollowingtheconclusionoftheJanuaryInterim,andisfourteenweekslonginclusiveofaReadingWeek,normallyscheduledduringtheseventhoreighthweekofthesemester.Finalexaminationsnormallyarescheduledduringthefifteenthweek.DuringtheweekfollowingEaster,EdenhoststheBrueggemann-Kulenkamplectures/SpringConvocation.Dayclassesarecancelledforthelecturesasstudentsareexpectedtobeinattendance.

  • ThesummertermbeginsshortlyaftergraduationandextendsthroughtheendofJune.ThecourseofferingsaremuchlikethoseintheJanuaryInterim,withtheexceptionthatinternationalopportunitiesandlanguagecoursesnormallyarenotoffered.

    Advising

    Full-timefacultypersonsareappointedtorelatetostudentsasfacultyadvisors.Asthename“advisor”implies,thisrelationshipistobedistinguishedfromthedecision-makingroleoftheDeans.TheDirectoroftheMTSdegreeprogramalsofunctionsinanadvisorycapacityforstudentsinthatprogramforconsultationindevelopinganyremedialplansrecommendedbyevaluationcommittees.Attimes,studentsintheseprogramsmaywanttoconsultwiththeiradvisor,aswellaswiththeProgramDirector.WhenanadvisorforathesisintheMTSprogramoraprojectintheMAPSprogramisappointed,thatfacultymemberbecomesastudent’sadvisor.TheAcademicDeanorDirectorofDMinservesastheadvisorforDoctorofMinistrystudentsuntilaprojectproposalispassedandanadvisorfortheprojectisappointed.

    Specifically,theroleoftheadvisorinvolves:

    • Overseeingthestudent’stotalprogramwithinthenormsoftheestablishedcurriculumincludingthedevelopmentofaplanforthestudent’stotalacademicprograminkeepingwiththestudent’sgoalsandthecompetenciesexpectedofanEdengraduate.Thisadvisinghappensinformalandinformalways.TheprimaryformalwaysarethroughthesisandprojectadvisingintheMTS,MAPS,andDMinandthePortfolioandEvaluationprocessiontheMDIV(seedegreeprogramsfordetails)

    • Inexceptionalcaseswhereelementsofastudent’sprogramlieoutsidetheestablishedcurriculum,thefacultyadvisorshouldreferthemattertotheAcademicfordecision.

    • Aidingthestudentinregistering:Thiswouldincludeaformalconsultationintheprocessofregistrationforeachsemester.Inthisconsultation,thefacultyadvisoristodiscussthestudent’sgoals,seminaryexpectations,takenoteofanyacademicorpersonalproblemswhichappear,andencouragethestudenttotakenecessaryaction.Thefacultyadvisorshouldreferseriousproblemsarisingfromtheconsultationstothe

  • Co-Deansforanynecessaryaction.• Readingthestudent’sContextualEducationcontractandreportsanddiscusswithhim/herany

    necessaryitemsrelatingtoseminaryworkandprofessionalgrowth.• Facultyadvisorsareconsideredprimarypersonsforconsultationindevelopingany

    remedialplansrecommendedbyEvaluationTeamsandwillassiststudentsinthechoiceofvocationallyintentionalelectives.

    • Beingavailabletothestudentasafacultyresourcepersonasnecessarytointerpretpoliciesandproceduresoftheseminaryandtolistentothestudentandconveystudentfeedbacktofaculty,Deans,orcommittee.Whennecessary,inthisconnection,thefacultyadvisormayrepresentthestudent’sconcerninfaculty.

    • Thefacultyadvisoristhebeginningpointofanymajorproblemastudentmightexperience.Thisdoesnotmeantheadvisorshouldengageinpersonalcounseling.

    Normally,thefacultyadvisorwillbeappointedtoserveonastudent’sSupervisoryCommitteeshouldonebecomenecessary.

    ClassroomExpectations,GradesandAssessment

    Studentsareexpectedtoregularlyattendallsessionsofacourseinwhichtheyareenrolledforcredit,totakescheduledexaminations,andtocompleteallotherrequiredworkaccordingtothescheduleannouncedforthecourse.Itiscommoncourtesytoalertfacultymemberswhenastudentwillmissaclassorwhenastudentneedstotalkaboutapproachingdeadlines.Itisthestudent’sresponsibilitytostayincontactwithfacultymembersaboutcourseexpectations.Inaddition,ifastudentdropsacourse,s/hemustfillouttheappropriatepaperworkavailablefromtheRegistrarandfollowtheotherpoliciesoutlinedbelow.

    Grades/ClassEvaluationPolicyClassevaluationisanimportantfacetofEden’sdegreeprograms.Thefollowingwillapplyregardingclassevaluations:

    • Itisexpectedthatclassinstructorswillmakeclearandexplicitatthebeginningofeachcoursetheirexpectationsandstandardsforevaluation.Thisshouldbegiventostudentsinwritingpreferablyaspartoftheclasssyllabus.

    • TheCurriculumandAssessmentCommitteeoftheFaculty,attheconclusionofeachacademicyear,willsurveythepatternsoffacultyevaluationandgradingtoseeiftheevaluationsandgradesevidencepatternsthatmaysuggestbiasesordiscrimination.Shouldsuchbefound,thematterwillbereferredtotheCo-Deforfurtherreviewandaction.

    ClassEvaluationOptionsAftersuccessfulcompletionoftwelvehoursandaCumulativeGradePointAverageof2.5orhigher,studentswhoarenotonprobationmaychoosetotakeanycourseonapass/failbasis.

    Aclassinstructormaydesignatethataclassmustbetakenonapass/failbasisif,intheinstructor’s

  • judgment,alettergradewillnotbepossibleorworksagainsttheeducationalpurposesoftheclass.

    Studentsonprobationmusttakeclassesforlettergradesunlesstheclassisdesignatedbytheinstructorasapass/failclassonly.

    ThePass/FailOptionThisoptionwillallowforthreeconclusions:

    Honors(PH):giveninfrequentlyforworkofexceptionalquality;intendedforextraordinaryachievementinaclass;Pass(PA):indicatesthatthestudenthasdonesatisfactoryworkatagraduatelevel;wouldbeatleastagradeof“C”onalettergradebasis;Fail(F):indicatesunsatisfactoryworkatagraduatelevel;littleevidencethatthestudenthasaccomplishedtheclassgoals.

    Thereisnolimitonthenumberofclassesthatcanbetakenonapass/failbasisafterthefirst12hours(seeabove).Classestakenpass/failwillcounttowardastudentGradePointAveragewhenastudentreceivesafailinggradeforthecourse.PasseswillnotaltertheGradePointAverage.

    TheLetterGradeOptionFivegradeswillbepossiblewithplus(+)designationforB,CandD,andminus(-)designationforA,B,CandD:

    A--forexceptionalworkatagraduatelevel;demonstrationofcomprehensiveknowledgeofthefield;workofnearpublishablequality;fullyintegrative.B--forsolidworkatagraduatelevel;asoundgraspofthefield;articulatecommunicationofideas;evidenceofgoodintegration.C--foraverageworkatagraduatelevel;adequateknowledgeofthefield;comprehensibleexpressionofideas;acceptableintegration.D--forinferiorworkatagraduatelevel;somebasicknowledgeofmajorideas;marginalcommunicationofideas;minimalintegration.F--forinadequateworkatagraduatelevel;littleevidenceofagraspofthefield;unclearexpressionofideas;littleevidenceofintegration.

    GradePointAverages(GPA)GradePointAverageswillbecalculatedforclassestakenforlettergrades.Gradepointswillbeawardedforeachlettergrade:

    A=4pts.;A-=3.7pts.;B+=3.3pts.;B=3.0pts.;B-=2.7pts.;C+=2.3pts.;C=2.0pts.;C-=1.7pts.;D+=1.3pts.;D=1.0pt.;D-=.7pts.;F=0pts.

    TodeterminetheGradePointAverage,gradepointsforeachclasswillbemultipliedbycredithoursforthatclass.

    ThetotalforallclasseswillbedividedbythetotalcredithoursattemptedforlettergradetodeterminetheGPA(i.e.,thetotalclassesinasemesterorcumulativelyforallcoursestakenforalettergrade).

    TheminimumacceptableGradePointAverageforgraduationis2.5.StudentswithaGPAbelow2.5willbeplacedonprobation.(Note:Policiesrelatedtodismissalforreasons

  • ofunacceptableGPAmaybefoundineachsectionofthedegreeprogramsunder“DismissalforAcademicReasons.”)

    ExtensionsTheexpectationisthatallclassworkwillbecompletedduringthesemester.Underunusualcircumstances,astudentmaynegotiateanextensionbeyondtheendoftheterm.

    StudentswhoanticipatetheneedforadditionaltimetocompletecourseworkmustfileanExtensionForm(availableintheRegistrar'sOffice)nolaterthanthelastdayoftheterm,asstatedontheacademiccalendar.

    TheExtensionFormmustbesignedbytheprofessorandreturnedtotheRegistrar'soffice.

    Studentswillbegivenapproximately2additionalweeksbeyondtheendofthetermtocompletetheirwork.ThisworkmustbeturnedintotheRegistrar'sofficenolaterthanthegradingdeadlinefortheterm.Thisdatewillbelistedontheformaswellasontheacademiccalendar.

    CourseRetakeGradingIfastudentfailsacourseandretakesit,boththefailedandtheretakegradewillappearonthetranscript.Ifastudentchoosestoretakeacoursewhichs/hehadnotpreviouslyfailed,thegradeforthesecondcoursewillbecomethepermanentgradeevenifitislowerthantheoriginalgrade.Studentswillreceivecreditfortheretakebutnotpriorattempts.Allcoursesandgradesappearonthepermanenttranscript.Studentswhore-takecoursesandareontheflatfeetuitionsystemwillcontinuetopaytheirflatfeepersemester.Theyarenotrequiredtopayextraforretakencourses.Theywill,however,paycontinuationfeeseachsemesteraftertheirfinalflatfeetuitionpayment.Studentswhoarepayingpercredithourtuitionwillberesponsibleforpayingthenormalper/creditamountforretakencourses,regardlessofthereasonfortheretake.Scholarshipmoneywillnotbeawardedinsuchcases.

    RecordingofGradesonTranscriptAstudent’ssemestergradewillbecomepermanentthirty(30)daysfollowingthepostingofthatgrade.Changesinthegrademaybemadebytheclassinstructorduringthisthirty-dayperiod,butnotfollowing.

    Agraduatingstudent’sfinalsemestergradebecomespermanentimmediatelyuponthepostingofthatgradeonthestudent’scompletedtranscript.Changesmaynotbemadefollowingthiscompletionofthestudent’stranscript.

    FailingRequiredCoursesStudentswhofailarequiredcourseinthemaster’scurriculumwillberequiredtorepeatthecourseandreceiveapassinggradetograduate.

    Ifadegreestudentfailsarequiredcourse,thestudentwillbeexpectedtore-enrollinthatcoursethenexttimeitisoffered,makingthenecessaryadjustmentintheremainderoftherequiredcoursesequence.

    Failureofarequiredcourseautomaticallyplacesthestudentonprobation.(Note:For

  • specificprobationpolicies,seeindividualdegreeprograms)

    AppealofFailingGradesOnlyfailinggradesforasemestermaybeappealed.Therewillbenoappealofanypassinggrades(i.e.anygradethatallowsthestudenttoreceivecreditforthecourse)noranyappealofotherthanthefinalsemestergrade.

    AstudentwhoreceivesafailinggradeinaclassforasemestermayrequestareviewofthegradebytheCurriculumandAssessmentCommittee.RequestforareviewistobemadeinwritingtotheAcademicDeanwithin30daysofthepostingofthatgrade(iftheDean’sgradeisatissue,therequestismadetotheDeanoftheStudentsortheoppositeCo-Deanwhowillfunctionintheroleasoutlinedbelow).Therequestforareviewmustindicatewhythereviewisbeingrequested.TheAcademicDeannorDeanofStudentswillnotparticipatewiththecommitteeinitsreviewprocessifsuchdeanisbeingreviewed.

    Whenareviewisrequested,theappropriatefacultycommittee(excludinganyfacultymemberwhosegradeisbeingreviewed)willreviewanytestsorpapersandhaveaninterviewwiththeclassinstructorandstudentinvolved.

    Attheconclusionofthecommittee’sreview,thecommitteemaysupportthefailedgradeormayrecommendtothefacultypersoninvolvedandtheCo-Deansomealternativetothefailureincludingthereasonsforthisrecommendation.ThecommitteeistoreportitsfindingsandrecommendationstotheCo-DeansoftheSeminaryinwriting.

    Ifthecommitteerecommendsanalternativetoafailedgrade,AcademicDeanwilldiscusstherecommendationwiththefacultypersoninvolvedtoseeifagreementaboutthecommitteerecommendationispossible.Shouldnoresolutionbepossible,theAcademicDeanwilldetermineifthefailedgradeorthecommitteerecommendationistobefollowed.

    FinalappealmaybemadebythestudenttothePresident.AnyjudgmentoftheAcademicDeanandDeanofStudentswillbefinal.

  • DirectedStudy

    PurposeandCriteriaDirectedstudiesareintendedtosupplementthecurriculumoftheseminarybyofferingstudentsanopportunitytoexploreissuesnotaddressedbynormallyofferedrequiredandelectivecourses.Exceptinextraordinarycircumstances,directedstudiesmaynotbeundertakeninlieuofrequiredcoursesortoduplicateregularlyofferedelectives.

    Ingivingapprovalforanyproposeddirectedstudy,theCurriculumandAssessmentCommitteewillusethefollowingcriteria:

    • Theproposalmusthaveaclearlydefinedprimaryfocusofstudy.• Theproposalmustincludearationaleindicatingwhythestudentwantsto

    undertakeadirectedstudyandwhythefocusofthestudycannotbeaddressedinthecontextofthenormalrequiredandelectivecourses.Theproposeddirectedstudymustnotcloselyduplicatearequiredorregularlyofferedelectivecourse.

    • Theprimaryfocusofstudymustbespecifiedbylearningobjectivesachievablewithinasemester’sstudy.

    • Theproposalneedstoincludeanoutlinefortheconductofthestudyincludingabibliography,thelearningactivitieswhichareenvisioned,waysthestudentandfacultysupervisorwillwork,somemethodofevaluation(papers,projects,presentations,etc.),andthecriteriatobeusedinevaluation;

    • Theproposalmustbesignedbythememberofthefacultywillingtosupervisetheproject;onlyinextraordinarycircumstanceswillpersonswhoarenotfull-timemembersoftheEdenfacultybeapprovedasdirectedstudysupervisors.

    Ifthesupervisorisnotfull-timeEdenfaculty,therationaleforhavingthispersonasasupervisorandthequalificationsoftheproposedsupervisormustbeincludedwiththeproposal.Afeeequivalenttoonecredithourwillbechargedandusedasastipendforthesupervisorifthedirectedstudyisapproved.

    Theproposalitselfwillbetakenasanindicationofthestudent’sreadinesstoengageindirectedstudy–theclarityoffocus,thecompletenessoftheoutlineandbibliography,theresponsibilityevidencedinthesuggestedevaluationprocessesandcriteria,etc.

    Allotherfactorsbeingequal,prioritywillbegiventostudentswhohavenotundertakenapriordirectedstudy.

    LimitationsandProceduresMasterofDivinitystudentsmaytakenomorethanonedirectedstudyintheirsecondyearandoneintheirthirdyear.Normally,directedstudieswillnotbeapprovedforfirst-levelstudents.MasterofArtsinProfessionalStudiesdegreestudentsmayundertakeonedirectedstudyaftercompleting24hoursofcourseworkandtheiroralevaluation.MasterofTheologicalStudiesdegreestudentsmayundertakeonedirectedstudyaftercompleting24hoursofcoursework.(ForpoliciesrelatedtoDoctorofMinistrydegreestudents,seethesectiononDoctorofMinistry.)

  • Procedures1. Registrationforadirectedstudywillnotbeconsideredandcannottakeplaceuntil

    theproposalformiscompleted,signedbythefacultymemberwillingtosupervisetheproject,submittedtotheRegistrarandapprovedbytheCurriculumandAssessmentCommittee.

    2. DirectedstudyproposalsmustbesubmittedtotheRegistrarbythedatesindicatedontheAcademicCalendar.TheappropriateformisavailablefromtheRegistrar’soffice.

    3. TheTaskGroupdecisionregardingapprovalordisapprovalisfinalandwillbecommunicatedbytheAcademicDeantothestudent,facultysupervisorandRegistrar.

    4. Ifmorethanonestudentrequeststhesupervisionofafacultymemberwhocanonlyoverseeonedirectedstudy,registrationwillbeapprovedusingthesecriteria:first,ifoneofthestudentshasalreadyundertakenadirectedstudy;second,whichproposalwassubmittedtheearliest.

    5. TheCurriculumandAssessmentCommitteeand/ortheAcademicDeanmayrecommendanalternativefacultysupervisorthantheoneproposedbythestudent.Alternatively,aproposalforwhichthereisnofacultysupervisorwillbegivenpriorityinthenextsemesterifthestudentsodesires.ProposalsrejectedbytheCurriculumandAssessmentCommitteeforfailingtomeetthecriteriafordirectedstudiesmustberewrittenandwillbeconsideredintheorderreceivedatthetimeoftheirre-submission.

    JanuaryandSummerDirectedStudiesJanuarystudyoptionswhicharestudentinitiatedwillbecountedasadirectedstudy.Normally,therearenodirectedstudiesduringthesummer.

    Master’sThesis

    ThepurposeoftheMaster'sThesisatEdenSeminaryistogivestudentsintheMasterofTheologicalStudiesandMasterofDivinitydegreeprogramstheopportunitytoengageincriticaldialoguewiththeliteratureappropriatetotheirchosenfieldofconcentration,todemonstratetheircompetenceintheuseofsoundmethodsofscholarshipandtomakeanappropriateandcriticalcontributiontothefieldofconcentration.Thepreparationanddefenseofthethesisentailssix(6)hoursofcoursecredit.QualifyingcriteriaapplyingtoMasterofDivinitydegreestudentscanbefoundintheMasterofDivinitysectionofthisHandbook.(Forpoliciesandproceduresrelatedtothethesis,pleaseseetherelatedsectionundertheMasterofTheologicalStudiesdegreeprogram.)

    TransferofCredit

    TransferofCreditInroutinematters(whenfewerthan15creditsarebeingtransferredfromanATS-accreditedgraduateschool,thecoursesarelessthansevenyearsoldandthegradesareB-orhigher)theAcademicDeanwillmakedecisionsregardingtheacceptanceoftransferofcredit.Creditforpreviouscourseworkwillbegivenonlywhentheworkispresentedaspartoftheoriginaladmissionsprocessanddocumentation.

  • TheAcademicDeanwillmakealldecisionsrelativetotransferofcredit.

    TransferstudentsfromATS-accreditedgraduatetheologicalschoolsmayrequestanevaluationoftheirrecordsbytheAcademicDean.AnofficialtranscriptshowingthegradesreceivedmustbeonfileintheOfficeoftheRegistrarbeforetransferofcreditswillbeconsidered.Anassessmentofthecourseworkwillbemadeatthestudent’srequest.Atransferevaluationwillbecompleted,andtheresultswillbecommunicatedtothestudent.Theseresultsareanestimationofthecoursework(anditsEdencourseequivalents)thatEdenanticipateswilltransfer.Thecreditsassociatedwiththecourseworkwillbeappliedtothestudent’sofficialtranscriptinaccordancewiththefollowingguidelines:

    1–12credithoursoftransfercreditwillbeacceptedafterthesuccessfulcompletionofonesemester.StudentsmusthaveacumulativeGPAof2.5orhigher,noincompletesandmusthavesuccessfullycompletedonesemesterofContextualEducation(forM.Div.students).

    Courseworkfromnon-ATSaccreditedschoolsStudents may request a review of master-level course work from institutions notaccreditedbyATSifthecredithasnotbeenusedtoearnanotherdegree.AllcourseworkofthisnaturewillbereviewedanddeterminedbytheAcademicDeanafterthefirstyearofstudy.

    SharedcreditsmaybetransferredfromGeorgeWarrenBrownSchoolofSocialWorkatWashingtonUniversitywhenthestudentisenrolledinoneoftwojoint-degreeprogramsofferedwiththatinstitution.Thenumberofcreditsallowedisdeterminedbyeachdual-degreeprogram.

    CourseworkfromAdvancedATSDegreesInapplyingtotheM.Div.degreeprogram,studentswhopresentaMasterofArtsinReligion,ReligiousEducation,aMasterofTheologicalStudies,orsimilardegreewillbeevaluatedonacase-by-casebasis.Normally,itwouldbeexpectedthatsuchastudentwouldspendfour(4)semestersinfull-timestudyatEdentocompletebothcourseworkandContextualEducationrequirements.

  • MovementwithinEdenDegreePrograms

    Astudentmustgetaletterofrecommendationfromhis/heradvisororotherfacultymember.ThisletterissubmittedtotheRegistrarwiththestudent’sletterofrequestforthechange.TheAcademicDeanwillreviewdegreerequirementsandthestudent’scurrenttranscriptinordertoassessthestudent’sprogresstowardgraduationinthenewdegreeprogram.

    LeaveofAbsence,WithdrawalsandRefunds

    Degreestudentsmayrequestaleaveofabsence.RequestsmustbesubmittedinwritingtotheDeanofStudentsandindicatethereasonfortherequestandthelengthoftheleave.AformmaybeobtainedthroughtheRegistrar’sofficeforleavesorwithdrawals.Leaveswillnotbegrantedforlongerthantwoacademicyears.StudentsneedtostayintouchwiththeinstitutionthroughtheDean’sofficewhiletheyareonleaveofabsence.Whenastudentreturnsfromanapprovedleaveofabsencewithintwoacademicyears,unusedscholarshipawardedatthetimeofadmissionwillcontinue.

    AcademicHonorCodeandDisciplinaryPolicy

    EdenSeminaryiscommittedtosecuringandmaintainingastudentbodywiththegiftsandgracestoassumepositionsofleadershipinthechurch.Tohavecredibilitywiththechurch,thecommitmentofEdenstudentstothegospelofJesusChristmustbeevidentintheirpublicconductincludingthewaysinwhichtheyparticipateintheacademiclifeoftheseminary.Thispolicyrecognizesthatcertainbehaviorsrelatedtotheacademiclifeoftheseminarymayresultindismissalfromtheseminary.YetthegospelisalsothetransformingpowerofGod.Thispolicyseekstooutlineproceduresbywhichtheseminarymightsupportanystudentwhohasengagedinunacceptableacademicbehaviorandencouragechangesthatmightallowthestudenttocontinueinseminary.

    ThepurposeofthispolicyistodefinethosestudentbehaviorswhichEdenexpectsofstudentsastheyparticipateintheacademiclifeoftheseminary,andalsotodefinethoseacademicbehaviorswhichEdenjudgestobeunacceptableforfutureleadersofthechurch.Thispolicyalsospecifiesproceduresbywhichtheseminarywillrespondifitseemsastudenthasengagedinunacceptablebehaviorwhileaparticipantintheacademiclifeoftheseminary.

    Thispolicyisnotintendedtodefinestandardsofacademicachievementnecessaryfor

  • graduationandwhichserveasthebasisforprobationordismissalforacademicreasons.Rather,thispolicyisconcernedwiththebehaviorsofstudentsastheyparticipateintheacademicprocessesoftheseminary.(Note:pleasereferto“DismissalfromtheSeminaryforAcademicReasons”foundineachdegreeprogramoftheHandbookand“DismissalfromtheSeminaryforDisciplinaryReasons”and“SexualHarassment”foundintheInstitutionalPoliciessectionofthisHandbook.)

    ExpectedAcademicBehaviorsItisexpectedthatstudentswillgiveproperacknowledgmentwhenusingsourcesinwrittenororalprojects.Thedirectquotationorparaphraseofpersons’speech,ormaterialinarticles,booksetc.,aswellastheuseoftheideasofothers(asthesehavebeenspokenorwritten)inone’sworkneedstobeacknowledgedappropriately(i.e.infootnotes,endnotesorotherwaysthattheclassinstructormayindicateasacceptable).

    Plagiarismisthedeliberateattempttopresentanother’swordsorideasasone’sown.Failingtofullyandaccuratelyacknowledgethequotations,paraphrasesortheideasofothersisconsideredamisuseofsources.BothareunacceptableacademicbehaviorsatEdenSeminary.CasesofplagiarismwillyieldanimmediatereferraltotheAcademicDean.Misuseofsourcesrequiresremedialinterventionwiththeprofessor.

    Itisexpectedthatinpresentingpapers,projects,oralreportsorotherassignments,studentswillpresenttheirownwork.Forinstance,apapersubmittedtoanEdenprofessorbearingthestudent’snameshouldbethepaperofthatstudent.Thisisnottoprecludediscussionswithotherpersonsaboutapaperorotherprojectasthepaperorprojectisbeingdeveloped,ortodiscourageacknowledgedgroupprojects.Itistoexpectthatacademicworkpresentedbyastudentashis/herownwillbetheworkofthatstudent.Finally,astudentmaynotsubmitapaperwritteninfulfillmentoftherequirementsofoneclasstofulfilltherequirementsofasecondclassunlessbothprofessorsinvolvedareconsultedandbothagreethatasinglepaperwillbeacceptable.

    Topresentapaperorprojectasone’sownthatsomeoneelsehaswrittenorotherwisesubstantiallyundertakenisunacceptableacademicbehavioratEdenSeminary.

    Foronestudentknowinglytowriteorotherwisesubstantiallyundertakeaprojectthatasecondstudentwillpresentasthesecondstudent’sworkisalsounacceptableacademicbehavior.

    Itisexpectedthatinwritingexaminations,theconditionssetforthfortheexaminationbytheclassinstructorwillbehonored.Referencetowrittenmaterials(books,notes,articles,etc.)isnottooccurunlessspecificallyindicatedasacceptablebytheinstructor(e.g.“YoumayuseanunmarkedBible,”etc.).Conversationwithotherpersonsduringanexamination,andacceptingorgivingaidwithexaminations,isalsoprohibitedunlessexpresslyallowedbytheinstructor.Theseexpectationsarenottoprecludetake-home,oral,oropen-bookexaminationsorotheralternativeformsofexaminationaclassinstructormaydevise.Itisexpected,however,thatwhateverconditionsaresetforthforanexaminationwillbehonored.

    Toviolateanyoftheconditionssetforthforanexaminationbyaclassinstructor

  • isunacceptableacademicbehavioratEdenSeminary.

    HonorCodeItisexpectedthatstudentswillnotonlyadheretotheaboveexpectationsforacademicbehavior,butthattheywillalsoreportanyknownviolationsoftheseexpectationsofwhichtheybecomeaware.Evenasunacceptableacademicbehaviorunderminestheacademicintegrityoftheseminary,so,too,doesknowingtolerationofunacceptableacademicbehavior.

    Toknowofunacceptableacademicbehaviorandfailtoreportsuchtotheinstructorinvolved,theAcademicDean,DeanofStudents,orthePresidentoftheSeminaryitselfisunacceptableacademicbehavioratEdenSeminary.

    ProceduresInitialinvestigationandhearing

    Studentbehaviorswhichmightwarrantinvestigationunderthispolicymightcometotheseminary’sattentioninseveralways:

    • theclassinstructormayobservetheunacceptableacademicbehavior(e.g.duringanexaminationperiod)ordiscoverthebehaviorwhileevaluatingapaperorproject(e.g.determinethatmaterialhasbeencopiedfromasourcebutnotacknowledgedinafootnote).

    • awrittenandsignedcomplaintaboutastudentmaybesubmittedtotheclassinstructor,AcademicDeanorPresident.

    • astudentbehaviormaybecomeamatterofpublicknowledgeorallegationwithintheseminarycommunity.

    Therecordsofanyinvestigationintoacademicmisconductwillbekeptconfidential.Norecordpertainingtoacademicmisconductwillbeplacedinastudentfileuntilallinvestigativeandhearingproceduresarecompleted.Ifastudentisexoneratedofchargesofacademicmisconduct,norecordoftheincidentwillbeincludedinthestudent’sfile.

    Whenstudentbehaviorwhichwarrantsinvestigationunderthispolicyhascometotheattentionoftheclassinstructor,AcademicDeanorPresident,ortheinstructoroftheclassandthestudent’sfacultyadvisor(orotherfacultyappointedbythePresidentiftheadvisoristhedeanorclassinstructor)(hereinafterthe“InvestigatingCommittee”)willconductaninitialinvestigationregardingtheallegedincidentandmeetwiththestudenttoprovidethestudentanopportunitytorespondtotheallegations.Saidmeetingwilltakeplacewithinten(10)daysafterreceiptoftheinformation.

    IntheeventtheInvestigatingCommitteedeterminesthatallegationsofunacceptableacademicbehavior(asdescribed)havemerit,theyshallrecommendtothefacultyandtothestudentaplantoresolvethematterthatwillincludearesolutionoftheacademicissueasfollows:

    1) Forfirstoffensesduringastudent’sseminarycareer,theexaminationpaper,project,etc.willbeconsideredfailedandthe

  • classevaluationwillbedeterminedonthebasisofthefailedwork.2) SecondoffenseswillnormallybegroundsfordismissalfromSeminary.TheAcademicDeanmaybringthemotiontothefaculty.

    Inaddition,theplanmayincludemandatoryremedialinstructioninproperacademicconduct(e.g.instructioninresearch,properfootnoting,etc.),theformationofasupervisorycommitteetosupervisethestudent,mandatorycounseling,otherprovisionforsupervisionorsupportandtherecommendationforaleaveofabsence.Therecommendedplanwillincludeprovisionforthefinalresolutionofthematterincludingconsequencesifthestudentfailstofollowthroughontherecommendations.

    IntheeventtheInvestigatingCommitteedeterminesthatallegationsoffailuretoreportunacceptableacademicbehaviorhavemerit,theymayrecommendtothefacultyandstudentaplantoresolvethematterprimarilyasprovidedabove.

    IntheeventtheInvestigatingCommitteerecommendsdismissal,orintheeventthestudentdoesnotagreewiththeplantoresolvethematterasdescribedabove,theCommitteeshallforwardtheirfindingsandrecommendationstoahearingboardashereinafterdescribed.

    HearingBoardTheHearingBoardwillconsistofthePresident,whoshallbeChairpersonoftheHearingBoard,afacultymemberappointedbythePresidentwhowasnotpartoftheInitialHearingprocess,afacultymemberchosenbythestudent,thestudentbodypresident/orco-president,andastudentappointedbythePresident.Ifthestudentfailstoappointafacultymemberwithintwo(2)daysofthenoticedescribedbelow,thePresidentshallappointtheremainingmemberfromthefacultyoradministration.

    TheHearingBoardshallmeetwithinfifteen(15)daysafterreceiptoftherecommendationoftheAcademicDean,classinstructorandfacultyadvisor(orappointee).

    HearingBoardProcedureAtleastfive(5)dayspriortothehearing,thestudentshallreceivenoticeinwritingofthetimeandplaceofthehearingandastatementofthespecificreasonsfortheproposeddismissal.Thestudentshallbegiventheopportunitytoinspectinadvanceallwrittenaffidavits,writtenstatements,exhibits,andrecordsthatwillbepresentedatthehearing.

    Thehearingshallbeprivateunlessotherwiserequestedbythestudent.Atthehearing,thestudenthastherighttoberepresentedbycounselathisorherexpense,therighttopresentadefenseincludingtherighttocallwitnessesandintroduceotherevidence,therighttoconfrontandcrossexaminewitnessesandtherighttomakearecordofthehearing.Thenoticetothestudentofthe

  • hearingshallalsoinformhim/heroftheabovedescribedrights.

    Atthehearing,technicalrulesofevidencedonotgovern.However,theChairpersonhasdiscretiontomakeprotectiverulingstoexcludeunreliableorprejudicialevidence.

    Atthehearing,conformitytotechnicalrulesofprocedureisnotrequired,buttheChairpersonmaymakeproceduralrulingstoexpeditethehearingandinsuredueprocessoflaw.

    Withinfive(5)daysofthehearing,theHearingBoardshallreportinwritingitsspecificfindingsoffactanditsdecisionregardingdismissalortermsofthestudent’scontinuedparticipationattheSeminarytothestudent.

    IntheeventthestudentdesirestoappealthedecisionoftheHearingBoard,thestudentmay,withinfive(5)days,fileanappealtotheExecutiveCommitteeoftheBoardofTrustees.TheappealistobemadeinwritingtotheChairpersonoftheBoardofTrustees.

    ExecutiveBoardHearingIntheeventthestudentappealsthedecisionoftheHearingBoard,theExecutiveCommitteeoftheBoardofTrusteeswillbeconvened.TheExecutiveCommitteewillreviewthewrittenfindingsanddecisionoftheHearingBoardandmay,thereafter,reaffirmorreversethedecision,orreturnthemattertotheHearingBoardforfurtherhearing.

    WaiverThestudentmay,uponreceiptoftherecommendationoftheAcademicDean,classinstructorandfacultyadvisor(orappointee)fordismissal,consenttothedismissalandwaivehis/herrighttoahearingbeforetheHearingBoard.Insuchacase,thestudentmustsignandfileawaiver.

    GraduationEdenTheologicalSeminarywillholdCommencementinMay.CommencementisapublicactoftheSeminaryinwhichtheseminaryconfersdegreesupongraduates.Theseminary,throughitsfaculty,administration,andboardoftrustees,willdeterminethenatureofthecommencementceremony,speakers,participants,etc.

    Anon-refundable,non-transferablegraduationfeewillapplytoMaygraduates.Allgraduateswillpaythisfeeregardlessofparticipationinthecommencementceremonyoractivitiespertainingtothegraduatingclass.

    ProcedureofApproval:AtitsMarchmeeting,thefacultywillrecommendtotheboardoftrusteestheapprovalofseniorstudentsforgraduation.Normalprogressthroughthecurriculumforeachdegreeprogram,includingcompletionofrequiredcourses,maintenanceofthestipulatedgradepointaverageandcompletionofpertinentevaluations,projects,or

  • theses,indicatethatastudentisfulfillingthegraduationrequirements.Allrequirementsmustbecompletedwithinthetimelimitationappropriatetotheindividualdegreeprogram(seedegreeprogramrequirements).

    Approvalforgraduationnormallywillbegiventostudents:

    • whoareenrolledincourses(includingtheproject)thatwillfulfilltheircredithourandrequiredcourserequirements;

    TuitionandFlatFeeSystemTheflatfeetuitionsystemprovidesastructurefortuitionthatbothclarifiestheseminary’sbillingpracticesandunderscoresacorevalueofthecurriculaofouracademicdegreeprograms.ThatvalueistheunderstandingthattheologicaleducationforthepracticeofChristianministryisbestaccomplishedwithacohortoflearners,oracommunityofstudentcolleagues,whoareengagedtogetheroveraseriesofsemestersinfull-timeacademicworkandcontextualtheologicalreflection.Assuch,theflatfeebillingpaymentsencouragestudentstoentertheprogramfulltime(afterasemesterortwoofcreditnon-degreediscernmentiftheychoose)andcompletetheM.Div.degreeprograminaperiodofthreeyears,andtheM.T.S.andM.A.P.S.degreeprogramswithinaperiodoftwoyears.Duringeachofthesesemestersofthesetwo-andthree-yearperiods,studentspayasingle,flattuitionpayment.Ifthestudentrequiresanextrasemesterortwobeyondthesetimeframes,theydonotpayanothertuitionpayment,butratherpaya“continuationfee.”Hencethevalueoffulltime,cohorteducationisunderscoredbyatuitionstructurethatmodestlybenefitsthosewhocompletethedegreewithinthetwo-orthree-yearperiodsandyetallowsforsomeflexibilityforthosestudentswhoneedmoretimetocompletethedegree.

    TheflatfeestructureisforstudentswhoareenrolledinMasterdegreeprogramsonly.Forcredit/non-degreestudentsandDoctorofMinistrystudents,coursesarebilledona“credithourbasis.”Ifastudenttakescoursesasacreditnon/degreestudentbeforeenteringaMasterdegreeprogram,thosecoursecreditsmaybeusedtomeetdegreerequirements(underthesameguidelinesasthosetransferredfromanotherseminary).Thecostofthedegreeprogramthatthestudentmatriculatesintoremainsthesame:sixsemestersofflatfeetuitionpaymentsfortheM.Div.programandfoursemestersofflatfeetuitionpaymentsfortheM.T.S.andM.A.P.S.programs.Theadvantageofbringinghoursintothedegreeprogramistheopportunitytocarryaslightlyreducedcourseloadduringtheremainderofthedegreeprogram.

    ScholarshipsmaybeavailableandmaybeconferredonlytothosestudentswhoareenrolledinMasterdegreeprogramsandpayingtheflatfeetuitionrate.

    Portfolio&EvaluationsEden’sM.Div.iscenteredonintegrativetheologicallearningbetweenclassroomsettingsandContextualEducationsettingsinthepracticeofministry.ContextualEducationSupervisorsandstudentsworkattheologicalintegrationinweeklysupervision.FacultyandstudentspracticetheologicalintegrationinacademiccourseworkandthePCLseminarsateachlevelofthecurriculum.Inordertoassesshowindividualstudentsareachievingthedegreeprogramgoalsandintegratingthislearningintotheirownvocationaldevelopmentthefacultyhasorderedaportfolioprocessthroughwhichstudentswillreflectontheirlearning,andfacultyadvisorswillassessstudentlearninginannualconsultations(atlevels1and2)andinpeerconsultation(atlevel3intheSeniorCapstone).

    InlateNovember,theCo-DeansoftheSeminaryandFacultyofthefirst-levelfallrequiredcourseswillmeettoreviewtheprogressofM.Div.studentsregisteredin

  • theircourses.Thepurposeofthisearlyreviewistodetermineiftherearesignificantconcernsregardingstudentlearning,andtoprovidethefacultyandstudenttheopportunityofanearlyintervention.Ifthefacultydeterminesthatacrossthecoursesastudenthassignificanttrouble,theymayrecommendameetingwiththestudent’sacademicadvisor,theassigningofasupervisorycommittee,orotheractiontothefaculty.AreportofthisreviewwillgototheDecemberFacultymeetingfordiscussionandaction.Ifthereviewraisesconcernsforastudent,theDeansOfficewillnotifythem.

    Ø ThePortfolio/Evaluation/ConsultationProcess

    ThroughouttheirprogramstudentswillcompileaportfolioconsistingofevaluatedcourseassignmentsandreflectionsontheirlearninginbothacademicandCEcourses.Studentsaresupportedinthisprocessthroughannualevaluation/consultationswiththeiracademicadvisors(levelone),theiracademicadvisorandCEsupervisor(leveltwo),andtheirSeniorCapstonecohort(levelthree).Inthefirstandsecondlevels,evaluationsarecombinedwithconsultativeacademicadvisingintheprocessofpre-registeringstudentsforcoursesandplanningCEsettingsforthefollowingacademicyear.

    Ø FirstandSecondLevelAnnualConsultationsFirstLevelDuringmid-February–mid-March(beforereadingweek)firstlevelstudentswillscheduleanappointmentwiththeiracademicadvisorinwhichtheadvisorwillsharefeedbackonthestudent’sportfolioandassesstheirlearninginrelationtotheoutcomesofthedegreeprogramgoals.Inthisappointment,advisorswillconsultwithstudentsregardingFall/Januaryregistration,drawingonthelearningassessmenttorecommendparticularcourseofferingstoaddressbothareasforgrowthandvocationaldevelopment.Theadvisorwillposttheevaluationtothestudent’sportfoliofollowingtheappointment.

  • SecondLevelDuringmid-March(afterreadingweek)–mid-AprilsecondlevelstudentswillscheduleanappointmentwiththeiracademicadvisorandtheirCEsupervisor.InthisconsultationtheadvisorandCEsupervisorwillevaluatethestudent’sreflectionontheirlearningandotherportfoliocomponentsforhowtheyevidencethestudent’sachievementoftheoutcomesofthedegreeprogramgoals.Theconsultationwillreflectonthestudent’slearninginrelationtothefirstlevelevaluationandassessstrengthsandweaknessesofthestudent’slearninganddevelopmentintheirvocation.Aswiththefirstlevelevaluation,theconsultationwillprovidespaceforadvising/pre-registrationforthesummer/falltermsinwhichthestudentwillbesupportedbytheteamtoidentifycoursesandCEopportunitiesthatcansupporttheirlearning.Theadvisorwillposttheevaluationtothestudent'sportfoliofollowingtheappointment.

    Ifinthecourseofthefirstorsecondlevelconsultation/evaluationtheadvisorhaspervasiveconcernsaboutastudent’sachievementoftheoutcomesofthecurriculum,thatfacultymemberwilltakethestudent’sportfoliotothenextfacultymeetingwherethefacultyasawholewilldetermine(inrelationtotheadvisor’srecommendation)ifthestudentwouldbebestservedbytheformationofasupervisorycommitteetocreatearemedialplantoaddressthelearningdeficiencies.Thesecommittees(normallycomposedoftwofacultymembers)serveassupportandaccountabilityforstudentsastheydevelopandcompleteaplantoaddresstheconcerns.

    Ifduringthisprocessastudentfeelsasthoughtheymayhavebeenunfairlyevaluatedtheymaybringawrittenstatementoftheircomplaint,detailingtheirunfairtreatmenttoAcademicDeanwhowillhearthecomplaintandinlightofthefacultyevaluationformdecideeithertocreateanewevaluationprocessforthestudent(inclusiveofanewfacultymemberandCEsupervisor)ortohavetheresultsoftheinitialevaluationstand.IfthestudentbelievestheAcademicDeandecisiontobeunfair,herorhisfinalrecourseistobringthatcomplainttotheCo-DeansoftheSeminary.TheCo-DeansoftheSeminary'sdecisiononthematterwillbefinal

    Inthecaseofanewevaluationcommittee,studentswillagreetoabidebyfindingsofthenewevaluation.Thefindingswillbetakentothefaculty,andthefacultywillconferanddecidehowtoproceed.Theresultsofthenewevaluationandthefaculty'sdeterminationofactionorremedialplan(inclusiveofsupervisorycommittee)willbefinal.

    EvaluationofstudentlearningcontinuesinthesenioryearwiththeSeniorCapstone.Thecapstonebeginsearlyinthefallofthesenioryearwithanallseniorandfacultyretreatduringwhichcapstonesmallgroupswillformwithseniorsandfacultyadvisorstobeginplanningfortheyear.Thecapstoneisanintentionallyfreespaceforstudentcollaboration,evaluation,andcreationoflearningandvocationaldevelopmentplans.Eachcapstonegroupwillcreateaprojectinwhich

  • studentswillcombinetheirinterestsintoanexperiencethatengageswiththegoalsofthecurriculumandcreatesopportunitiesforreflectionontheirlearningandnextstepstowardministry.Facultyserveascollaboratorsandconsultantsinthispeerdrivenprocess.Bothstudentsandfacultywilluploadanevaluationofthecapstonetothestudent’sportfoliouponthecompletionofthecapstone.

  • SupervisoryCommittees

    AsupervisorycommitteemaybeformedforastudentbecauseoftheFirstLevelfallFacultyRevieworthespringFirstorSecondLevelEvaluation,orifseriousdeficienciesareidentifiedinthestudent’sprogresstowardgraduationandreadinessforministry.TheCommitteewillconsistof:thestudent’sfacultyadvisorandoneotherfacultymemberchosenbytheAcademicDeanwilldesignatetheCommitteechair.TheDeanofStudentswillserveasaconsultanttosupervisorycommittees.

    Asupervisorycommitteegenerallywillfollowtheseprocedures.

    Thecommitteewillreviewallmaterialinthefilesofthestudentincludingacademicrecords,portfolio,andContextualEducationrecords.Thecommitteemaysolicitanyotherinformationfromfacultyand/orstudentsitdeemsuseful.

    Thecommitteewillmeettoconsiderwhatpointsmayneedclarificationbeyondthematerialsofarreviewedandpreparetointerviewthestudent.

    Thecommitteewillinterviewthestudentaftertheaboveprocesshasbeencompletedtoexploreanyandallpointsinquestionconcerningthestudent’sprogress.

    Aftertheabovereviewprocessandinterviewhavebeencompleted,thecommitteewillworkwiththestudenttodevelopaplantoaddressdeficiencies.Theplanwillincludeaprocesstodetermineifthelearningissuehasbeenresolved.Thismayentailare-takeofthestudent’sSecondLevelEvaluation(withthesameoradifferentcommitteedependingonthecircumstances)oranotherprocesstodetermineifthestudenthasmetthelearningoutcome(s).Examplesmayincludethesuccessfulcompletionofarecommendedelectiveinthecurriculum,orthesuccessfulevaluationofareflectionpaperbytheSupervisoryCommittee.Inothercases,thecommitteemayadvisethestudenttowithdrawfromseminaryormayrecommendtothefacultythatthestudentbedismissedfromtheseminary.

    Thesupervisorycommitteewillmeetwiththestudentonanon-goingbasis.Studentsareresponsibletoscheduletheseappointmentswiththeircommitteemembersbasedupontheremedialplantheyoutlinetogether.ThecommitteewillconsultwiththeAcademicDeanaboutthestudent’sprogress,andreporttothefacultyatleastonceasemesteronthestudent’sprogress.Ifthecommitteebelievesnoprogressisbeingmadetowardresolutionofissues,itmayrecommendtothefacultydismissalofthestudentprovidedthecommitteehasbeenmeetingwiththestudentforatleastthreemonths.
