FROM THE DESK OF THE CHAPTER PRESIDENT

As I write this letter, heat waves are shimmering from the pavement outside. This would be a good time to review the recommendations of ACI 305, “Guide to Hot Weather Concreting”. The quality of the concrete can be greatly influenced by how we deal with this hot weather. Also, do not forget to protect and properly cure your test cylinders. Tests have shown a strength reduction of almost 1000 psi for cylinders that were not kept between 60 degrees and 80 degrees per ASTM C 31. In April, our Chapter held it’s first annual Scholarship Fund Golf outing in Lawrence. Approximately 100 people turned out for some fun and to help raise funds for our scholarship program. I want to thank everyone who participated, our event sponsors and everyone who helped out. Remember helping a student is an investment in the future of our industry. A special thanks to Alan Bandyk and Joe Hug who spent a lot of time and effort to make this event a success. I would like to congratulate the winners of our 2008 Chapter Scholarships. I know these fine young men and woman will become excellent leaders in our industry. You can read about them on page 5. Our next chapter event will be our annual (FREE!) QC conference held in conjunction with the Kansas Ready Mix Concrete Association, September 9th in Topeka. This year’s focus will be on specifying, producing, placing and finishing durable concrete for outdoor exposure. Also coming up on September 23rd, the Kansas ACI Chapter will be one of the organizations co-hosting a dinner meeting in Kansas City with featured speaker Joe Nasvick, Senior Editor of Concrete Construction Magazine. See additional information in this newsletter. And finally we have the opportunity to attend the Fall ACI national convention hosted by out neighboring MO ACI Chapter in St Louis November 2nd – 6th. Attending ACI conventions is a great way to learn the latest in concrete technologies and practice, participate in technical and educational committees and network with over 1300 people involved in our industry. I encourage all of you to take this opportunity to attend an ACI convention and find out what it is all about. I hope you all have a safe, productive and prosperous summer and I look forward to seeing you at our upcoming fall events. Dave Suchorski, Chapter President

Often times we get so busy getting product out the door and hope that we are providing a quality and durable product, but DO we really have a durable product? Concrete, if made properly should last 30-40 years. This seminar will assist you with making your concrete more durable to stand the tests of time and traffic.
