During the meeting, the Minister and Secretary heard about the work done so far to promote the Guiding Principles across the state and discuss a shared vision to address the increasing number of Aboriginal children entering Out of Home Care (OOHC). Other key outcomes from the December GPYC meeting included discussion on: Monitoring and measuring implementation of the Guiding Principles Raising the FACS delegation for key decisions related to Aboriginal children and young people Further communication around the role of advocates and support people FACS’ complaints process, including accountability Review of the Aboriginal Children and Young People Project. www.facs.nsw.gov.au

Minister Hazzard and FACS Secretary attend the Guiding

Principles Yarning Circle

Brad Hazzard, Minister for Family and Community Services, and Michael Coutts-Trotter, Secretary for Family and Community Services attended the final meeting for the year of the GPYC, which was recently formed to serve as the state-wide Advisory Group and oversee the implementation of the Guiding Principles across the state.

During the meeting, the Minister and Secretary heard about the work done so far to promote the Guiding Principles across the state and discuss a shared vision to address the increasing number of Aboriginal children entering Out of Home Care (OOHC).

Other key outcomes from the December GPYC meeting included discussion on:

Monitoring and measuring implementation of the Guiding Principles Raising the FACS delegation for key decisions related to Aboriginal

children and young people Further communication around the role of advocates and support people FACS’ complaints process, including accountability Review of the Aboriginal Children and Young People Project.

Throughout the year GMAR NSW has held meetings with various communities and FACS districts to promote the Guiding Principles, to discuss establishing Local Advisory Groups (LAGs) and to learn from communities who have made progress in this area. Communities visited included:

− Dubbo (Western NSW) on 1 November 2016

− Ballina (Northern NSW) on 10 November 2016

− Macksville/Kempsey (Mid North Coast) on 11 November 2016

− Wyong (Central Coast) on 14 November 2016

− Mount Druitt (Western Sydney) on 15 November 2016

− Moree (Hunter New England) on 8 December 2016

− Nowra (Illawarra/Shoalhaven) on 15 December 2016

To continue to connect and provide support to these areas, a workshop will be held in April 2017 to progress establishing LAG’s in these communities.

Discussions have progressed in Hunter New England, as the district involved in the development of the Guiding Principles regarding the establishment of LAGs in Moree/Toomelah/Boggabilla/Mungindi and Tamworth/Gunnedah.

Work will continue in 2017 to engage with additional communities.
