“Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.” Proverbs 16:3

Associate Pastor

Reviewed the process leading up to the selection of Will Simpson as our new Director of Music Ministries; all felt the process was very good. And we are all very appreciative of the many folks who contributed to this processHappily accepted seven (7) new members to the CongregationTodd Carmichael gave an update on the upcoming annual Stewardship CampaignJeff Stedman, the Congregation Treasurer, provided an update on our finances through the 3rd quarter. We are tracking our budget fairly well for the year, but our Share the Vision pledges appear to be down a bit. The Finance Committee has an article in this issue of the VOICE about this; see page 9Debbie Szabo reported that the Mayors’ Day of Concern for the Hungry event brought in over 29 tons of food for the Emergency Feeding Program. The excitement around our congregation is almost bursting at the seams. For about 6 months there have been many people involved with the search, phone screenings, interviews and auditions for our new Director of Music

Ministries, Dr. Will Simpson. Saint Andrew’s is a congregation that God has blessed with a wide variety of leaders who have a seemingly endless number of talents. For me these past 6 months have been a time of excitement, reflection and anticipation. The words from Proverbs 16:3 have really come alive for me as I reflect on my experience. Even the best laid plans, when they are not out of the center… focused on the Lord… are bound to fail. However, when we commit to follow the Lord’s lead amazing things happen. Things we may not have expected to happen at first, but things which remind us that God is good and always watching over us.

With this in mind I would like to thank those who have been involved in our search process. Without these people none of this would have been possible, and we would have never found a candidate of Will’s quality. So first of all, I would like to thank the Transition team: Dan Johnson (Chair), Linda Powell, Aaron Davis, Tom Getzinger, and Stephanie Lester. This group put in a lot of time gathering congregation feedback and facilitating the search and interview process. I would like to thank the Human Resources Committee, especially Rob Moe and David Anderson (Council Representative to the HR committee). This group did a wonderful job gathering market data needed in the final stages and helped in structuring the interviews. I would like to thank the Musicians at large. This was a large diverse group that included our choir and instrumentalists who helped us evaluate Will’s musical skills and capabilities. I would like to thank the Worship and Liturgical Arts Committee: Sharon Gurtel (Chair), Jim Davis, Shelly Abner, and Kit Bowerman (Council Representative). This group helped in the search process, the interview process, and the evaluation process. Sharon also played a integral role helping structure Sundays while we have been without a Music Director. Some of Sharon’s help included arranging offering music, setting up communion assistants and liturgists, and helping Pastor McEachran and me pick “singable” hymns. Finally I would like to extend a special thanks to Matt Camrud, Les Martin, Gus Blazek, Bryant Wilkie and Elaine Koga. This group has overseen the choir, handbell choir, and led service since the beginning of September; without them we would have been singing a cappella!

As we now get ourselves ready to welcome Will and his wife Erin to our congregation I hope that you take a moment and thank those who have led our congregation in this time of transition. It is amazing to see the ways God has worked, and a humble reminder that with God all things are possible (Matthew 19:26). You are an incredible congregation, and it is an honor to serve you.

In Christ, Pastor Wes Telyea Pastor Telyea’s blog: www.caughtbychrist.blogspot.com

Kit Bowerman will assist the Nominating Committee in getting started with seeking candidates for the upcoming Council position vacancies, Audit Committee positions, and Outreach Endowment Committee.

If you have any questions or concerns/inputs, please let a Council member know.

In Christ, Jerry Mack President, Congregation Council

We are delighted to welcome back our Communion Class for Kids. It will be held on Saturday,

October 27, from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon, for all children in Kindergarten through 3rd Grade and their parents. This 3-hour session will include a lesson on the significance of meals and The Meal itself; time to bake bread; and a final half hour liturgy in the sanctuary of sharing the meal around the altar.

On October 28, Reformation Sunday, there will be a blessing for these kids before they receive Communion.

Parents: If your child has already been to the table...we ask you to include them in this class. This will be a “teaching” opportunity regarding the Holy Sacrament, giving your child, at a more appropriate age, more depth of understanding as to what the Sacrament means.

as well as issues for children approaching school as a “full time job.” The Kindergarteners will be blessed and “gifted” with the SPARK Story Bible during the 11:00 am worship service on Sunday, October 28. The parents and children will then gather during the Education Hour on November 4 to have a parent/child Bible exploration.

Sundays, October 28, November 4 and 11ColossiansPresenter: Pastor James McEachran

Colossians is one of the “prison letters” of Paul. He writes to a congregation in which there

was a great temptation to compromise the basic elements of Christian doctrine to accommodate other teachings. Some worshipped angels, others thought more knowledge was the way to salvation and there were those who were not convinced that Jesus was sufficient. Paul reminds us that the Faith is faith in God, who comes to us through Jesus, and by the power of the Holy Spirit calls us to faithfulness, confession of that Faith, and witness to Jesus. A good start would be to read Colossians 2:8-15, and to ask the question, “What does Jesus Christ mean to us today?”

Sunday, November 11KnitWitsFacilitator: Dianne Chong

The Knit Wits (Knitting as Witnesses) are a fellowship group whose primary mission is to

provide items of comfort that are knit and/or crocheted. The items they are currently making are prayer shawls, chemo caps, and scarves for homeless veterans. All are welcome to join!

November 18 is Stewardship Commitment Sunday. We will worship together at one service at 9:30 am,

providing the opportunity to bring our commitments/pledges to God. Worship will be followed by a catered fellowship brunch. Invitations have been mailed. Reservations for the brunch can be made through November 4, either by returning the reply card or online (www.SALChome.org, select “Brunch RSVP”).

Sunday, November 25Stepping into Adulthood (High School Seniors)Facilitators: Lois Nelson and Kari Henderson

As young people graduate from high school, a new time in life is beginning. Some will go to college,

some will enter the work force, and others may join the military. Some will stay close to home while others may move away. These topics and others explore the issues of parenting a young adult. We will take a look at their increasing independence, the wisdom of their life choices, and how to instill in them a sense of self-esteem, personal self-discipline and good decision-making. This first session (held early in the school year) will be a discussion of quilts and/or other special gifts which parents may present to their young adult at a worship service on June 16 along with blessings from pastor and parents.

Sunday, December 9The Jewish Understanding of MessiahPresenter: Rabbi Mark Glickman

Judaism and Christianity understand the word “messiah” in vastly different ways.

In his talk, Rabbi Mark Glickman will discuss traditional and modern Jewish understandings of what the messiah is, and how those perspectives have influenced Jews and non-Jews throughout history. Why don’t Jews believe that Jesus was the messiah? How can

they reject Jesus as messiah even though Jesus was Jewish? And what do Jews mean when using this oft-misunderstood and emotionally-laden term? Rabbi Glickman will address all of these questions and more in what promises to be an enlightening experience for us all.

Walking—The Ultimate Bargain Exerciseby Nayna McLennan and Virginia Williams

“For we walk by faith, not by sight.” 2 Corinthians 5:7

Experts from Group Health to Mayo Clinic agree that moderate walking is the best exercise for most people. It’s so easy because you don’t need any special equipment or training to participate. Good walking shoes, willing feet and

a consistent determination are all you need.Who can do it? Anyone. We encourage all levels of ability. Some will want an active workout and others will want to

just enjoy a leisurely walk through the park. How do you do it? Start with a five minute easy warm up walk. Next pick up the pace so you’re walking a little faster

but not so fast you are breathless or can’t speak in sentences. Continue this pace for 10 to 20 minutes. Then walk moderately for as long as you want. You are the best judge.

How often? The recommendation for beginners is to start with 2 or 3 times a week and increase gradually to 5 or 6 times. It is suggested that you rest your muscles at least one day a week. (God rested on the seventh day.)

When? We are all busy but excuses won’t give you a stronger heart, legs and lungs or a pleasing mirror image. Many health issues are improved through regular exercise and healthy diet.

Arthritis is one of the diseases that can benefit from a 20 to 30 minute walk. Dr. Klippel of the Arthritis Foundation states that studies show that arthritis is the leading cause of disability and pain. It is proven that exercise plays a role in preventing onset of arthritis and will help build your strength, flexibility and endurance.

Americans get a billion colds a year, resulting in 15 million lost workdays. No one has yet found a miracle cure, but vigorous exercise may come close. A recent study from the University of South Carolina, in Columbia, tracked the activity levels and the incidence of colds in 547 healthy adults. Those who were moderately to vigorously active for 60 to 90 minutes a day, every day, were nearly 25 percent less likely than their couch-potato counterparts to catch a cold. If 60 to 90 minutes of exercise a day seems daunting, don’t worry: According to the researchers, it doesn’t have to be a lengthy gym workout. Activity in smaller increments throughout the day, like walking the dog or climbing stairs instead of taking the elevator, can be just as beneficial.

What is it about exercise that keeps people from getting sick? Physical activity stimulates the immune system, although experts aren’t sure about the exact mechanism. “We know exercise increases heart rate and adrenaline - things that help in the short term by allowing you to breathe more deeply and clear the lungs,” says Douglas McKeag, M.D., director of the Indiana University Center for Sports Medicine at the Indiana School of Medicine, in Indianapolis. “Think of it as flushing out whatever infection may be inside.”

Weight loss is a factor. Increased weight, of course, seriously affects health in many ways. A loss of 11 pounds can decrease your chance of getting osteoarthritis. Losing 15 pounds can cut knee pain in half. Ideal weight at all times means a healthier you for life. Walking will help you attain and maintain your ideal weight.

With healthier days at your “toe tips”, Health and Wholeness Ministry would like to find out your interest in forming a network of walkers at Saint Andrew’s. We look forward to seeing you on our first walk on Saturday, October 27 (weather permitting.) The time is 10:00 am. This will allow those who wish to attend the Woman’s Luncheon at noon to participate. The place will be the Blueberry Lake walking area and we will meet at the Starbucks in Kelsey Creek plaza. Walk your way to a whole new you!

We enjoyed seeing part of the museum, the music, a great dinner catered by McCormick and Schmick’s, recognition of parish nurses and our featured speaker, Joan Westberg. We also thank those unable to attend, but supported the program with financial gifts. We are grateful to be in service in Christ’s name.

Personal Care Kits - Thank You!

THANK YOU for your generous donations for the Lutheran World Relief (LWR) Personal Care Kits.

Members of Health and Wholeness Ministry assembled the contents you donated into 66 kits since last May’s shipment. These will be used when natural disaster strikes or when political upheaval occurs to displace people. At those times people have very little time to gather their belongings. They need basic items to help them get started on the road to normalcy. All these items help the most needy and vulnerable of the world to deal with the ordeal they are living through.

Reflections

One of my very talented sons surprised me a few weeks ago by asking me if I would do the vocals

for a song on his next solo album. Even though his genre of music—electronica—tends to lend itself more to instrumental I felt so honored that I didn’t think twice! That he wanted his old, fuddy-duddy mom to sing on his album gave me a sense of euphoria. The feeling was, alas, temporary. What I didn’t know before I said “yes” is that not only did he want me to sing but he wanted me to write the lyrics and the melody line! My euphoria faded into dread. I am not by any means a poet (any good lyricist is indeed a poet) nor would I consider my talents to lie in writing melody lines for music as complicated and unconventional as electronica. But it gets worse!

He sent me an MP3 of the instrumental part. The title is “god particle.” Hmmm…I thought, not knowing exactly what the reference was. I’ll bite. What is the inspiration for the title and music, I asked him. Since texting is the preferred method of communicating with this generation I put it to him in a text message. His response included the following phrases: “Inspiration…comes from the god particle aka Higgs boson as well as science, dark energy/matter… origins, humanity, progress, recent innovations and discoveries of science/technology coupled with humanity evolving…creation, mother god=goddess/giver of life, what makes us human, where we come from…” Wait! What?? I know he’s deep thinker and finds much inspiration in science but where did all this come from?! My thoughts zeroed in on the term “god particle.” To be honest, I had not heard of that or if I had I had forgotten. Now be honest, most of you probably haven’t heard of it either. I figured that if maybe I did some research on that topic I might find some inspiration. That research led me down the rabbit hole of quantum physics, particle physics, ancient philosophers, and the science vs. God debate.

For your enlightenment, “The God Particle” is actually the name of a book by Leon Lederman, a scientist involved in the recent presumed sighting of the smallest particle of matter—the Higgs boson aka god particle—through use of the Superconducting Super Collider. Have I lost you yet?! Anyway, before you should think that Dr. Lederman is giving credit to God for this particle, which is supposedly that from which all matter has sprung let me burst your bubble. The title is really more of a jab; he really wanted to name the book the more blaspheming title “The God-******* Particle” but his publisher demurred. But he gave the Higgs boson the nickname “god particle” also because the search for it reminded him of the Bible story of the building of the Tower of Babel.

I can tell you that writing lyrics to a song dedicated to this particle was a supreme challenge. I think I have shared with you over the years that I have struggled greatly with

my faith in recent years and being confronted with the potential of more scientific evidence that God does not exist has not helped. But I did finally, with the help of the Taize community, some ancient Gregorian chants, an ancient pre-Socrates philosopher, and even Dr. Lederman himself, compose what I feel is a type of Psalm. And I am not giving up on God yet. I do not think the writer of Genesis was too far off the mark. I’m holding out the “wind of God,” at work in the world, at work humanity, at work in me. Praise be to God! God-particle

Financial UpdateGood day everyone!

The Finance committee is pleased to report that we had a small positive

Net Income in September reminding us of our congregation’s generosity with God’s gifts. We are heading into the 4th quarter and normally that brings up the topic of the annual budget process. We will be talking about that more in next month’s VOICE article, but this month the Finance Committee would like to say a few words about Share the Vision contributions and pledges.

As we reviewed the Share the Visions pledges and contributions to date in 2012, we noticed something very exciting. As of the end of September our mortgage balance is approximately $75,600. Also, as of September, our congregation’s Share the Vision giving so far in 2012 is approximately $122,000, about one-half of the 2012 pledges. A quick calculation

will tell us that the “mortgage-gets-paid-off-point” is 80% of our estimated pledges. If everyone gets their pledged giving caught up for Share the Vision we will be able to pay off the mortgage in 2012!!!!!!! Very exciting!! We are so close!

We’ll give you an update next month and look forward to talking a little about the budget process next month as well.

Shoe Drive “Kicks Off” Again!

As partners together in mission, Saint Andrew’s will again be collecting PREVIOUSLY-OWNED/USED

SHOES in support of Kent Lutheran Church’s South Sudan Community Restoration Program. All proceeds are used to enable their ministry in South Sudan. We will be receiving shoes from now until January 31, 2013.

Used shoes in RE-USABLE CONDITION are wanted to make them available in developing nations, thus providing high-quality and low-cost footwear for people who may not have otherwise been able to purchase them. So get busy and clean out those closets and hidden places where shoes can hide, trying to escape fulfilling the purpose for which they were created: to protect and serve feet!!!! Look for the large box in the narthex labeled SHOES. Please bind pairs together, if possible.

Outreach and Servant MinistriesServing Those Who Served

It has been a year since Andrew’s Glen opened. What a blessing it has

been to serve the veterans of Andrew’s Glen and Francis Village for these months. Several of us, both veterans and veteran supporters, have had the opportunity to meet with them for meals and other occasions. We have gotten to know a number of them even as some have moved on to permanent housing, including some to Francis Village.

We welcome anyone who would like to be involved, veteran or not. This is not a clique, but rather an opportunity to “fit in” in a way that gives back more than we can give. Our next event will be a steak dinner at Andrew’s Glen on Sunday November 11, Veteran’s Day, at 5:00 pm. If you would like to attend or donate to defray the meal cost, please contact Dave Marcrander. If you have interest in this or any other way of connecting with these wonderful women and men who have served our country, please also let Dave know and we will add you to our list of potential volunteers for all future events.

IN VESTVETS

Addicted to the Joy of Serving by Jean Wahlstrom and Marv Kananen

In an attempt to describe the ministry of educating that we were privileged to share in Tanzania for 12 years

at MGLSS, Marv often uses the imagery of our being ‘drug pushers’ and the ‘drug’ we were ‘pushing’ was HOPE! Of course, God is the source of this HOPE, not us. (Romans 15:14 “May the God of HOPE fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you may abound in HOPE by the power of the Holy Spirit.”) We witnessed what God can do in a young girl when she has been given the gift of HOPE. Her life can improve and that most often helps her extended family. Because there is a Maasae Girls Lutheran Secondary School (MGLSS), young pastoralist girls can hope for a better future. HOPE is a drug, hope is addicting! I know, for I, too, am addicted.

Now retired in Bellevue, folks often ask what we miss about life in Tanzania. There are many things but the main answer is that we, ourselves, were ‘addicted’ to the joy of serving, seeing God make a difference each day in the lives of these girls!! We got used to being daily ‘pushers’ in each class and conversation, meetings and even with the unexpected guests at our door.

I frequently reflect on how my ‘addiction to serving’ began. It began many years ago. I was told that my maternal grandmother was a traditional midwife; she was often called out at night to assist another baby into this world. No matter when or where or how, she was ready because she had trained herself well and God had made her joyfully willing. Likewise, my mother made many meals, hot dishes, afghans, etc. to meet the needs of others. I can’t tell you how many Bible studies my father taught nor how many folks he pulled out of ditches. All these things my family did with joy, cheerfully serving others, even in the midst of Minnesota snowstorms. I inherited this ‘addiction,’ thinking that this lifestyle was the norm. My parents made it clear that this was “our part” in response to what God had done for us (2 Peter 1:3–8). It was in serving that God could birth HOPE in others.

This month sets a milestone for Maasae Girls’ graduates: three of our ‘girls’ are graduating from medical schools: they are doctors. They exemplify what HOPE can do. When they started as skinny, undernourished 13 year old bush kids, I doubt they dared to dream of becoming doctors who would some day serve their own people. Because of Maasae Girls School more girls can now began to dream their own dreams, knowing there is a way towards fulfilling their dreams. God has given them HOPE. Watching what God can do in the lives of others when they are given a chance to grow and develop is also addicting, it brings a joy like none other! Together, let’s keep making it happen!

If you are not addicted to HOPE and the JOY OF SERVING, we urge you to try it!

MGLSS Scholarship Update

Operation Bootstrap Africa (OBA) has heard from all the current scholarship sponsors of students at the

Maasae Girls Lutheran Secondary School regarding their ability to continue their support for the girls. Final calculations show that 9 students are without full scholarships ($900) and 25 other students lack half-scholarships ($450), making a total shortfall of $19,350 in operational support for the school for 2012.

If you can help or know anyone who can, please help get the word out regarding this marvelous opportunity for maximum return on every dollar invested in a girl’s education!!! Take the gold forms off the bulletin board in the narthex and pass them to folks/organizations/groups/relatives/friends who you think may be able and interested in helping! Bless you all and thanks for your partnership in ministry.

Outreach/Servant MinistriesThe Crop

by Lowell Arneson

In the fall of 1621 – almost 400 years ago – the Plymouth Colony celebrated what we have come to

call the “first” thanksgiving. This was nearing the end of the Colony’s first full year in this new land, after the landing of the Mayflower in the spring of 1620. It had been a rough and tough time getting through the past 18 months. Now, the crop was in, and along with their Indian neighbors, they had a thanksgiving meal, and a service of prayers of thanksgiving.

The crop that the Pilgrims of Plymouth celebrated was food, not only grown in the fields, but game animals taken from the wild. In truth, their “crop” was even beyond that. It was also the freedom that they felt, their general lack of serious disease, a feeling of accomplishment and a sense that things would be OK. God had been good!

If you grew up on a farm, you know that “The crop” is farmer-speak for the annual production of the farm. Farming is all about “The crop.” It may consist of grain, potatoes, cattle, hogs, and many other products, including dairy products. Orchards and vineyards have their crops. The fishing industry has theirs. All these crops are food related and seasonal (usually annual). With all of our modern processing and packaging, we don’t give much thought to where our food comes from. We should, of course. We’d appreciate it more.

Now, most of us are not farmers, ranchers, orchardists, or fishermen, but I would suggest that we all are raising crops. Our crops are not just about food. Our crops come in many forms: money, enjoyment of our world around us, friends and family. These are things that we receive, either through our efforts, or by good fortune. But this is the small portion of our crop. The large portion is not what we receive, but what we give. It is our yield, our output, our harvest.

Our field is laid out before us. It is a world in need. God invites us into the field. With His help, we go out and plant seeds of help for those in need. Sometimes we see those seeds growing into a crop, a crop that we can claim, giving God the glory. In Matthew 9, we read, “When Jesus saw the crowds, He had compassion on them because they were confused and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. He said to His disciples, ‘The harvest is great, but the workers are few. Pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest; ask Him to send more workers into His fields.’”

How is your crop looking? Have you been able to find some needs where you could provide a kind word, a bite of food, a few dollars, a needed ride, or some good advice that made a difference for someone? As we approach the close of another year, let us thank God for our crops – the blessings that have come directly to us, but especially for our opportunity to work in His field. As we move through the Thanksgiving Season, let us remember the field and The Crop.

Reflections

Congregations for the Homeless (CFH)

As Christians we are blessed to be a blessing. We are called to serve in

large and small ways, near and far. In October, Saint Andrew’s had the opportunity to team with Eastshore Unitarian Church, serving 35 men in the CFH program. Thanks to everyone who served in the sandwich making or dinner preparation and meal serving for these men. This was a fabulous opportunity for us to be God’s hands in the world and share our blessings with those experiencing the challenges and strains of homelessness as they struggle to rejoin the mainstream. These men were very appreciative of each and every kindness. And I know that many of us were deeply touched and greatly blessed by the time we spent with them. Again, thanks to you all!

Outreach and Servant Ministries Committee

Friends of Youth

Friends of Youth is an organization that delivers services for youth, young adults and families, and

provides safe places to live and emotional support for youth and families who are in challenging circumstances. On October 10, it opened its new Homeless Youth Service Center, which includes a daytime drop-in center and the only overnight emergency shelter for young adults in East King County, housing 15 young people nightly. It has a kitchen, two bathroom/showers, nursing, counseling, a computer station, lockers, and a place just to rest.

Friends of Youth was selected to receive a portion of the benevolence funds from our Share the Vision! Be the Life! Mission and Ministry campaign. In the opening celebration, Saint Andrew’s was recognized as a contributor. In a letter to Saint Andrew’s, Friends of Youth Executive Director Terry Pottmeyer wrote, “Your ... offer of congregational engagement transforms our ability to serve Eastside homeless young people and meet our mission to end homelessness for youth and young adults in our community. Thank you!”

Love Tree

During each Advent season, we at Saint Andrew’s have the special opportunity to brighten the holidays

for many people with our “Love Tree” program. In the past, we have given gifts to folks in Bridge Disability Ministries, Columbia Lutheran Home, Eastside Baby Corner, Imagine Housing, King County Youth Detention, and others. Gifts for Bridge Disability Ministries are collected in November. All of the other organizations will have gift tags on our Love Tree. Watch for our Tree in the narthex on Sunday, November 25. You can return the reply card that came with the invitation, complete a reply card in the narthex, or reply online, www.SALChome.org, select “Brunch RSVP”.

Prayer Vigil“Evening, and morning and at noon, will I pray, and cry

aloud: and He shall hear my voice.” Psalm 55:17This is a time to focus on spiritual growth, for each of us

as individuals and for our congregation. An hour of quiet time in silent prayer is something that many of us may never have done before. It is a time of personal spiritual growth as we share our thanks and our concerns with God. It is also a time of community growth as we pray for the concerns of other members.

Come to the Prayer Vigil: Starting at noon on Friday, November 2, we will hold a Prayer Vigil here at Saint Andrew’s. Everyone is encouraged to come and spend an hour in silent prayer. Bring your praise, your thanks and your concerns to God. Pray for our church, its members and all of those in need. Pray for your brothers and sisters in Christ through the prayer requests that have been submitted for this vigil. Meditate on scripture and listen for God’s guidance.

The Hours: The Prayer Vigil is from 12:00 noon - 10:00 pm on Friday, November 2 and from 10:00 am - 12:00 noon on Saturday, November 3.

Quiet Hours: The hours of 6:00 pm on Friday and 10:00 am on Saturday will be quiet – without any background music. So, if you prefer this, sign up for one of these hours.

Special Hour for All Ages: The hour at 7:00 pm on Friday will be a special hour of prayer for all ages. It will include prayer activities connecting to God in a variety of ways: writing/drawing, prayer by color, etc. (Great for families … probably not as quiet as the other hours.)

Sign up for the prayer vigil in the narthex or by contacting Dick or Debbie Szabo. Submit prayer requests for this vigil using cards available in the narthex. Place the prayer request cards in the Prayer Box in the narthex or in the offering plate.

“First of all, then I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions and thanksgivings be made for everyone…”

1 Timothy 2:1It’s About Your Life!

Discipleship and Fellowship

Stewardship Musings By Lynn Mack

“…make sure you don’t become so full of yourself and your things that you forget God, your God. Remember that God, your God, gave you the strength to produce all this wealth

so as to confirm the covenant that he promised to your ancestors – as it is today.” Deuteronomy 8:14, 18

The theme for our Fall Stewardship Program is “Stewardship: It’s Not About the Money. It’s About

Your Life!” And, you may be thinking, “What kind of word games are they playing. Of course it’s about the money!” Is the message “don’t pledge” or “don’t give money to the church”? Absolutely not! But, the Stewardship Committee wants to challenge each of us to grow in our understanding of what is involved in the stewardship of our lives.

If we confess that we believe in God… Father, Son and Holy Spirit…then we are saying we believe that God is supreme in our lives. And, if he is, then we need to trust in his provision, his generosity, his abundance.

Human nature hasn’t changed. In Deuteronomy 8:11-20 Moses reproaches the Israelites not to forget God. In essence he says, “Don’t pat yourself on the back while taking credit for your successful career, your nice house and big bank account. Don’t become so full of yourself and your things that you forget God! But instead, remember that it is God who gave you the strength and knowledge and

ability to produce what you have.” Then Moses reminds them of God’s covenant with them through Abraham… they would be blessed to be a blessing.

God says they and we have things reversed. He says, “Give me your life and I’ll take care of the rest! I’ll provide for you, and I’ll do it abundantly. I’ll bless you, and then you can pass the blessing on to others, showing them the love of Christ.”

It might be easier to recognize God’s abundance if it wasn’t for the contradictory message of the world, which can drown out the voice of God and lead to attitudes of entitlement, scarcity, and a feeling of self-

made superiority. As the stewardship program

unfolds, I pray that we will each look honestly at our lives with the ability to recognize

God’s abundance and generosity, to trust him to continue to bless us, to embrace contentment as a way of life that enables us to give all of ourselves to his service. This will require sacrifice, faith and discipline. Are we willing to make the stewardship of our lives a spiritual discipline? Make this the year that you allow God to be God in your life… because

it really is about your life!

“Stewardship: It’s Not About the Money. It’s About Your Life!”

Mission StatementAs a people saved by God’s grace through faith,

Saint Andrew’s Lutheran Church is joined by our common belief in Jesus Christ and is a welcoming community of believers who, empowered by the Holy Spirit:

Gather to worship, hear God’s word, and share the Sacraments

Encourage, renew and strengthen faith in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord

Equip, educate and nurture a deeper understanding of the expression of faith in daily life, and

Send people into the world to serve.

between homework, sports, and after school activities. We welcome you to take a little time out every other Wednesday Night to catch up with your friends at Saint Andrew’s. You can stay for 30 minutes or you can hang out for the full hour and a half! Dinner will begin at 6:30 pm and will be served until 7:15 pm. Stop by anytime you like. Look for more details in your email.

Join us this month November 14 and 28. God Squad will serve at Advent Soup Supper on December 5.

Force for some laser tag fun!! We will travel to Federal Way to enjoy an afternoon at Laser Quest. We will leave Saint Andrew’s at 12:15 pm and return at 3:45 pm. Be sure to get your homework done beforehand! You don’t want to miss out! Sign up by October 28.

Lock In!Mark your calendar for our annual God Squad Lock

In December 7-8! The evening will include a trip to Bellevue Snowflake Lane and Bellevue Garden d’Lights, Sock Samurai, and Random Acts of Kindness.

Babysitting or Kids In/Parents Out

Play games, watch a movie, and enjoy some pizza with some of the youngest in our congregation. We will enjoy an entertaining evening with Sheep and Shepherds kids while their parents gather together at an offsite location or take some time to themselves. Mark your calendar for Saturday, December 15, 4:45 pm - 9:15 pm.

White Elephant Gift ExchangeOn Sunday, December 16, during CrossWalk, we will

enjoy a White Elephant Gift Exchange to celebrate the Christmas season. So search the depths of your closet, get rid of that Christmas sweater Aunt Sally got you last year, and bring your tacky, silly, ridiculous gift item (wrapped) to CrossWalk at 9:45 am on Sunday, December 16. Please spend a minimum amount of money on your gift. Ideally your gift will cost you $0!!

CrossWalkWelcome to CrossWalk, high school’s education

hour, formerly known as the TenSpot. This hour has taken a new form, and with that, a new name! From 9:45 am - 10:45 am every Sunday, we welcome a guest speaker to talk with us about various topics on faith, life, and all that comes with it. Look to your bulletin and God Squad’s Facebook page for an announcement on the current week’s topic.
