By George DickieFans of “Batman” will surely want to

check out a series from the makers of“Gotham” that explores the backstory ofone of the franchise’s secondary charac-ters and debuts this week on EPIX.In “Pennyworth,” an hourlong drama

from Danny Cannon and Bruno Hellerthat premieres Sunday, July 28, Jack Ban-non (“Medici”) stars as Alfred Penny-worth, Bruce Wayne’s future butler andan amiable young man in a dark, forebod-ing 1962 London, who is just off a stintas a Special Air Service soldier, where heserved his country alongside friendsBazza (Hainsley Lloyd Bennett, “Cata-strophe”) and Dave Boy (Ryan Fletcher,“Outlander”).Taking a job as a nightclub bouncer, he

meets and falls for bohemian dancerEsme (Emma Corrin, “The Crown”) andmakes the acquaintance of American ty-coon Thomas Wayne (Ben Aldridge,“Fleabag”), the yet-to-be-born Bruce’s fa-ther. But when a sniper takes a shot atWayne and Esme is kidnapped by BetSykes (played by British chanteusePaloma Faith), an operative for the right-

wing Raven Society, Alfred and his palsmust take action to rectify both situations.“This is really the origin story of that

Pennyworth character ...,” Heller ex-plained to a recent gathering of journalistsin Pasadena, Calif. “And it’s really thechance to make him the center of a storyand explain that journey. How did he getfrom being a young SAS soldier to beinga butler in America? And it also gives usa chance to create a real world aroundhim, a world in England that fits thewhole DC universe. ... Jack and theseguys here have created a world as we’regoing. So, it’s surprising to all of us thedepth and range that you can go to withthis character.”Indeed, while Bannon says he had a fair

amount of latitude in creating the youngPennyworth, that also came with some re-sponsibility to remain reasonably faithfulto the DC Comics character that fansknow.“There is a huge amount of pressure,”

the actor says, “and obviously some in-credible people have played him later onin life, but ... what takes the pressure offis that we’ve never seen him this age. ...You know, the world that Bruno’s createdis a great playground for us to muck aboutin. And we’re sort of rewriting little bitsand changing little bits and having funwith it. So that alleviates the pressure.”

By Jay BobbinQ: What happened to “The Red Line”? Itjust disappeared. — Alice Larson, DeLand,Fla.A: CBS intended the Noah Wyle-starringdrama to be a limited “event” series, so allof its eight produced episodes aired overconsecutive Sundays in April and May, twoepisodes per night. The network did havean option to continue the franchise, presum-ably with a different story, but it decided notto exercise that despite the considerableproducing cred of Greg Berlanti and AvaDuVernay. The program’s less-than-strongratings undoubtedly were a big factor.

Q: It’s interesting to see Mischa Barton aspart of the cast of “The Hills: New Begin-nings,” and it made me think that I haven’tseen her do much acting lately. What hasshe been doing professionally? — AmberKay, via e-mailA: The past several years largely havebeen a combination of stage work, inde-pendent films and “Dancing With theStars” for her. Her movies have leanedlargely toward horror and suspense, by herprofessed preference, with such titles as“The Basement” and “Ouija House” in-cluded; thanks to her residual fame fromthe series “The O.C.” (which inspiredMTV to develop both “Laguna Beach:The Real Orange County” and “TheHills”), the makers of such relatively smallfilms undoubtedly have been happy tohave Barton both present and promotable.Barton also had the role of Shelby in a pro-duction of “Steel Magnolias” that touredIreland and marked the first time she haddone live theater in a while. And in 2016,she competed in the spring season ofABC’s “Dancing With the Stars,” stayingin the contest for a month before she andpartner Artem Chigvintsev were elimi-nated.Q: I’ve heard that Demi Moore was on“General Hospital.” If so, when, and whodid she play? — Kate McDonald, Leav-ittsburg, OhioA:Moore’s movie career was very young, with only two films to its credit (including“Parasite”), when she joined the venerableABC serial in 1982 as investigative jour-nalist Jackie Templeton. She didn’t stayvery long, leaving the show the next year— and seeing her film value explodeshortly thereafter, thanks to such picturesas “Blame It on Rio” and “No Small Af-fair,” but especially “St. Elmo’s Fire” and“About Last Night ... .”Q: On the old “Batman” series, was theBatmobile an actual working car, or was itjust a visual effect? — Kim Derwin, via e-mailA:Oh, it was (and is) a real vehicle ... andwe can say that firsthand, having stoodnext to it on one memorable occasion.Legendary car customizer George Barrisfashioned the Caped Crusader’s “wheels”out of a Lincoln Futura prototype that hadbeen seen in its original form in the 1959Debbie Reynolds-Glenn Ford movie “ItStarted With a Kiss.”Because a Batmobile was needed almostimmediately when ABC ordered the seriesin the mid-1960s, Barris decided to trans-form the Futura (which he had purchased)rather than start from scratch. He keptownership of the car during production, with 20th Century Fox Television payinghim a leasing fee for its use, but it has beensold a couple of times over the pastdecade. The last time was a real deal, sinceit included the Batcycle, too. (“Um, sweet-heart, I’ve put a couple of things in thegarage ... .”)

HOLLYWOODBy Tony RizzoHOLLYWOOD — “Game of Thrones” stars havemoved on. Richard Madden, who scored big asElton John’s lover in “Rocketman,” is up next inSam Mendes’ “1917,” with Benedict Cumberbatchand Colin Firth. Though the 33-year-old Scotsmanplayed a gay man in “Rocketman,” he prefers notto discuss his private life and has been dogged bythe press, who think his relationshipwith his “out” gay actor roommateand constant companion, 25-year-oldBrandon Flynn (who recurred inHBO’s “True Detective” and the Net-flix series “13 Reasons Why”), aremore than “just friends.”Emilia Clarke stars with Henry Gold-ing and Emma Thompson in “LastChristmas” (in theaters Nov. 8) and“Above Suspicion,” with Jack Huston.Sophie Turner, late of “DarkPhoenix,” who recently became Mrs.Joe Jonas (of the Jonas Brothers),stars in “Broken Soldier,” with Ray Li-otta and Mark Kassen. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau hasmade two films in his native Scandinavia: “SuicideTourist” and “Notat.” Peter Dinklage is next in theanimated feature “The Croods 2” (out Sept. 8,2020).Kit Harington, who came away from “Thrones” asthe biggest star, must have had the greatest pres-sure, because he used his break to enter a treat-ment center to work on personal issues. Couldthose “issues” be because of his “Game ofThrones” co-star Rose Leslie, whom he wed in

June 2018, or overmedicating?***

“Slumdog Millionaire” Oscar-winning directorDanny Boyle, who also directed the current Beatlessongfest “Yesterday,” is touting Robert Pattinson tobecome 007 after Daniel Craig completes his sec-ond of the two current Bond films. Problem is thatPattinson just signed to play Batman, and Boylequit directing the current Bond films due to cre-ative differences.George Clooney, currently in the Hulu series

“Catch 22,” has signed with Netflix todirect and star in the post-apocalypticfilm “Good Morning, Midnight,”about a lonely arctic scientist whotries to make contact with the crew ofa spacecraft as it returns to Earth. The original Agatha Christie hit“Death on The Nile” (1978) starredPeter Ustinov (as Hercule Poirot),Maggie Smith, Angela Lansbury, BetteDavis, Mia Farrow, David Niven andGeorge Kennedy, but the remakestars only director Kenneth Branagh(as Poirot), with Armie Hammer,

“Wonder Woman” Gal Gadot and some unknowns.Branagh’s other Christie remake, “Murder on theOrient Express,” grabbed $363 million. Can he doit again with this cast?Ryan Murphy and Netflix have united to bring theTony Award-winning cast of the 50th anniversaryproduction of “The Boys in the Band” — starringJim Parsons, Zachary Quinto, Andrew Rannells andMatt Bomer — to movie and TV screens. Spoileralert: It has no band and is not a musical, butthey’re all very funny and light ... in their loafers!
