EcoSchools Update

The Homestead Husky Helpers are looking forward to an exciting year. The team consists of 80 students from grades 3, 4 & 5 and had regular meetings in October. The main focus ofthese meetings was Waste Reduction.

The Husky Helpers are responsible for monitoring the “contamination” in the recycling and garbage bins. Recycling & garbage audits will occur every Friday in our school. The class that helps reduce the most amount of “contamination” will receive the Waste Reduction award for the month!

Waste-Free Wednesdays will begin on Wednesday, November 8. This year, the Husky Helpers are encouraging all students to bring in a waste-free lunch. This means bringing your lunch in a reusable bag and using reusable containers and utensils. The Husky Helpers are responsible for doing weekly spot checks. If your class is selected and you have 4 or more reusable containers in your lunch your name will be entered in the monthly draw to win a Homestead water bottle.

Homestead once again has partnered with David Suzuki S.S to collect milk bags to make bed mats for children in underdeveloped countries. The Husky Helpers would like to take this time to thank all students who brought in milk bags for the milk bag challenge! More information on the success of this challenge will be posted on Twitter and in the December newsletter.

The Husky Helpers would also like to thank all the students who participated in our Walk to School Wednesday Challenge to celebrate International Walk to School Month. The following students received Homestead water bottles for their participation; Japman K6, Bhavya 1C, Japijot 2C, Mirza 3B, Rayan 4B and Nichelle 5D. Congratulations!

Stay tuned for more events and interesting facts from the Husky Helpers in the December newsletter. Until then  follow us on Twitter @HomesteadEcoSch.

The LLC was a busy place in October!  We had a very successful Scholastic Book Fair with over $7000.00 in sales so we were able to keep over $2400.00 worth of new books for our LLC. The winning draw ticket belonged to Nia from 5A. Nia and Mrs. Reynolds-Hately each won $25.00 in books! Thank you Homestead and community for your support!

Grade 2’s finished up a Math STEM inquiry and we are in the middle of a Grade 5 Human Body inquiry. Students have created digestion systems, respiratory systems and used our human body lent to us by Mr. Kavidas to delve deeper into the human body inquiry. (Thank you Mr. Kavidas!)

We had a great Halloween in the LLC with our Literary Pumpkin contest. Classes were asked to design pumpkins with their favourite book character or cover. We saw amazing creations of Little Critter, Thomas the Train, Elephant and Piggy, Dogman, Tacky the Penguin, Pete the Cat, Little Red Riding Hood, Geronimo Stilton, Wonder, Haunted Canada and Mickey Scorcer’s Apprentice.  Classes voted and in 3rd place was 1C’s Scooby Doo, 2nd place was K8’s Clifford and the winning pumpkin was 5A’s Wild Robot. Congratulations and thank you to all theeducators and students for participating! See the video here: https://goo.gl/dQPNrF (copy and paste the link).

Please check out our Twitter account for pictures and up to the minute Tweets @HomesteadLLC.

Thank you, Mrs. Morrison-Edgar

Looking at Self-Regulation

As a school, we have been learning to prevent BIG problems. We have been doing this in a number of ways, including teaching our students to S.T.O.P. which is our new school- wide acronym to teach students to solve problems.

One way to approach this is to think about regulating your body when you encounter a problem.

How can you self-regulate to STOP yourself (calm your body) from making problems bigger?

What can you do to make sure you keep calm?

Once you're calm, what can you do? Make a plan that will:

Snap your fingers Count to tenTake deep breaths Take a step back

Community Corner

The Peel District School Board is pleased to introduce an electronic resource page on www.peelschools.org called, Community Corner, which contains links to information and resources in the community that may be of interest to students and their families. This site replaces our previous method of sendingpromotional materials about community clubs, camps, contests, fundraisers and events home with students on a regular basis. In particular, their site contains info about programs offered on PA Days.

How you can access Community Corner 1. Visit: peelschools.org/parents/communitycorner

2. Click on the “Community Corner”   button, found on the main page of school websites, as well as on www.peelschools.org.

School Success at Homestead

How are we engaging students to be mathematical thinkers?

This month, we have launched our school- wide math prompt: Math Around The Halls! The first Thursday of every month, all of Homestead will respond to a math question, situation or picture. Once they are finished responding, we will post our work all around the school! Students will get a chance to look and respond to everyone's work.

We are learning to show ourmathematical thinking and responding to questions in different ways.

Calming thoughts: what makes you feel positive and relaxed?"This is hard, but I can do it...""I can stay in control..."

Make you feel like a winnerMake the problem smaller, not BIGGERNot hurt anyone, yourself or anything
