  • DefinitionA set is a collection of objects (sometimes called elements)

  • ExamplesThe set of calculus students at Healdsburg High. The set of real numbersThe set of math teachers who live in Sonoma County

  • DefinitionA subset is a set consisting of a selection of objects within a set.

  • ExamplesThe set of female calculus students at Healdsburg High. The set of real numbers > 2The set of math teachers who live in Healdsburg.

  • DefinitionTwo kinds of set notation:Roster notationSet builder notation

  • ExampleRoster notation: the set of whole numbers greater than 20:

  • ExampleRoster notation: the set of whole numbers greater than 20 and less than 25:Write a subset of set A using roster notation.

  • Try ThisWrite using roster notation the set F of integers greater than or equal to 12.

  • ExampleSet Builder notation:the set of integers greater than or equal to 12.

  • Try ThisWrite using set builder notation the set B of real numbers between 3 and 8.

  • ExamplesInterval notation:(3,8) all reals between 3 & 8 (open interval)Be careful, this looks like an ordered pair

  • ExamplesInterval notation:[3,8] all reals between 3 & 8 plus 3 plus 8 (closed interval)

  • ExamplesInterval notation:What could this mean?(3,8][3,8)

  • Try ThisWrite using interval notation the domain and range of:Domain:Range:

  • Lesson CloseInterval and set notation will be used in many of our calculus lessons. You can now express the domain and range of your parent graphs in either notation.
