FY2018hasbeenaneventfulyearforITE.Wefocusedonthreekeythrusts,whichwereinlinewithourtheme,Think Future, Create Today:StudentSuccess&Resilience,DigitalisationandOrganisationalExcellence.
StudentSuccesshasalwaysbeenacorefocusforITEanditremainsakeyfocusin2018.Severalinitiativeshavebeenputinplacetohelpourstudentsdiscovertheirpassionsandsucceedatworkandinlife.Asworkforcelearningcatcheson,wehavedevelopedaslewofprogrammesforadultlearners.Manyofthemweredesignedtobequickandconvenienttobringthemuptospeedwithnewindustrychangesanddemands.
FY2018was also the yearwhere buzzwords like ‘Industry 4.0’, ‘digitalisation’ and ‘automation’were oftenrepeated.Inthemidstofchallengingeconomicconditionsandtechnologicaladvances,theneedforSingaporetoremaincompetitivegloballyisurgent.TheMinistryofTradeandIndustryrolledoutIndustryTransformationMaps(ITMs),covering23sectorsandaccountingforover80percentofourGDP,totacklethesechallenges.KeytotheseITMsistheshifttowardsdigitalisationanddeepeningofskillsamongworkers.Andwe,atITE,arerighttheretosupporttheGovernment’sinitiatives,astheeconomycontinuestotransform.
Newpartnershipswereforgedtoensureourstudentsgotthesupporttheyneededtodevelopdigitalskillsthatwerecritical inpreparingthemfor future jobs. Internally,ourstaffalsotookon initiatives thatutilisedtechnologytohelpimprovedworkefficiency–bothintheclassroomandout.
ToskillalargeportionofSingapore’scurrentandfutureworkforcerequireseffortonthepartofeveryoneinITE.Andtodothiseffectively,thereisaneedtoensureevery‘gear’works.Wehave,overtheyears,workedhardtoachieveorganisationalexcellence.Webelieveawell-runorganisationwithstaffwhotakeprideinwhattheydocandeliverbetterresults.AndinITE’scase,thistranslatestohighersuccessratesforourstudents.

Forourstudents,ITEisthegatewaytoaworldofopportunities,abetterlife,andapromisingcareer.Atthesametime,wewant toseeourstudentsprogress in life. InFY2018,we introducedthreenewHigher Nitec coursestocatertothegrowingdemandformanpowerintheFood&Beverage,Automotive,andEngineeringindustries.
FromApril2018,NitecinPastry&BakinggraduatescanopttodeepentheirskillswiththeHigher Nitec in Pastry &BakingcourseheldatITECollegeWest.ThiscourseservestomakeourPastry&Bakinggraduatesmoremarketable.Similarly,theneedforstrongerskillcompetenciesintheautomotiveandengineeringindustrieshaspromptedtheintroductionoftheHigher NitecinAutomotiveEngineeringandHigher NitecinRobotics&SmartSystemscourses.Thisbringsthenumberoffull-timecourses(TechnicalDiplomas,Nitec,andHigher Nitec)to98for2019.
The Enhanced Internship Frameworkwasputinplacetoensurestudentsundergomeaningfulwork-basedlearningandpickupindustryrelevantskills.Attheendof2018,ITEhascollaboratedwith2,810 companiestotrainabout10,500 studentsunderthisFramework.AsofMarch2019,some80 per centofITE’scourseshaveimplementedEnhancedInternship,upfrom69percentthepreviousyear.Thisbringsusonestepclosertoourgoalofhavingallsecond-yearstudentsundergoEnhancedInternshipby2021.
ITEhasalsobuiltonotherexistinginitiativestoallowmorestudentstofocusonpursuingtheircourseofchoice.BybroadeningAptitude-basedAdmissions,almost50percentoftheNiteccoursesareavailableunderthisschemeintheJanuary2019intake.Wehavealsostreamlinedandsimplifiedthefinancialassistanceapplicationprocesssostudentsfromlower-incomefamiliescanreceivetheaidtheyrequirewithminimalfuss.Withonelessworry,studentscanfocusmoreontheirstudies.
AspartofITE’sholisticdevelopmentofstudents,18essentialGeneric Skills and Competencies (GSCs)wereinfused into the LifeSkills curriculum. TheseGSCs, identified under the SkillsFuture Framework, are furtherreinforcedwhenthestudentsparticipateinco-curricularactivitiesorwhileundergoingIndustryAttachments.
InFY2018, ITEalsogavegreater focus to ITEgraduatesandadult learnersbyofferingmorepathwaysandgreateropportunitiesforlifelonglearning.Forgraduates,theWork-Learn Technical Diploma (WLTD)wasfirstannouncedin2017asanalternativepathwayforthoseseekingtodeepentheirskills.FourWLTDswerelaunchedin2018.TenmoreWLTDs,tobelaunchedin2019,wereaddedtothelistforatotalof14.Thesewereintheareasof:

WehavealsoincreasedthecourseofferingsforSkillsFutureSeriescoursesfrom 35 to 64,forworkingadultstoenjoyagreatervarietyofAccessible,Bite-size and Convenient (ABC) learning programmes.AsaProgrammePartnerfortheSkillsFuture for Digital Workplace,ITEisalsocommittedtohelpingSingaporeansbeawareofemergingtechnologiesandtoprepareforadigitally-literateworkforce.

ByendMarch2019,ITEhasbuiltindustryalliancesthrough115MOUs.SomeofITE’snewpartnershipsincludeAISingapore,AutomationAnywhere®,ExxonMobilAsiaPteLtd,NationalParksBoard,PayPalPteLtd,ShengSiongGroupLtd,ShellEasternPetroleumPteLtd,andSiemensPteLtd.
Tocatertocompanies’workforceupgradingneeds,ITEhasalsopartneredwithotheragenciestooffermorecustomisedcoursesandjointcertifications.Anexampleofthis isthenewJoint ITE-UPECCertificateinPre-hospitalEmergencyCare,whichissupportedbytheMinistryofHealth.Wenowhavefourjointcertificatesforindustryaccreditationpurposes.

Atthe2018MinistryofEducationSpecialAwardsPresentationCeremony,15 ITE graduateswhohadprogressedtofull-timestudiesatthepolytechnicsreceivedtheLee Kuan Yew Scholarship to Encourage Upgrading (LKY STEP) Award.Ofthe15,sixreceivedtheSultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien Book Prize.Ofthesesix,onereceivedtheLee Hsien Loong Award for Outstanding All-round Achievement,aswellforoutstandingacademicresults.
SUCCESS IN THE GLOBAL ARENA
Competitionsareagoodgaugeonhowwellourstudentshavelearnttheircraft.Moreimportantly,theyallowourstudentstodevelopotherskillsthatwillhelpthemintheircareers,suchasteamwork,discipline,interpersonal skills, timemanagement andmore.Where possible, ITE students are also encouragedto takepart inoverseascompetitions. InFY2018,anumberof themhavemade ITEproudwith theirachievements.
WorldSkills ASEAN Bangkok 2018
The12thWorldSkillsASEANCompetitionwasheldinBangkokfrom31Augustto2September2018.Itattracted331 competitors in 26 skill areas from10ASEANcountries.TeamSingaporefielded40 competitors in 20 skill areas,ofwhom20werefromITE.Overall,TeamSingaporedidwellandachievedthree Gold,three Silverandthree Bronzemedals,aswellasseven Medallions for Excellence.
LimHuiFangdidITEproudbywinningtheGold Medal in Beauty Therapy.ShealsowontheBest of Nation Medal,giventothetop-performingcompetitorfromeachcountry.Ouralumnus,WongShiJie,whoiscurrentlywithNgeeAnnPolytechnic,alsowontheGold Medal in Mechatronics(teamevent).ShiJiegraduatedfromITEinDecember2015.
ITE’s Silver Medallists were Vanessa Kow Chin Wen for Beauty Therapy and Shuana Tan Shi-Yu forInformationNetworkCabling.VanessawillberepresentingTeamSingaporeinBeautyTherapyatthe45thWorldSkillsCompetition,inKazan,inAugust2019.LimVoonKongandMahJiaYongtooktheBronzeMedalforIndustrialAutomation(teamevent),whileJeffLiuBiHuireceivedtheMedallionforExcellenceforInformationNetworkCabling.
Asia Innovation Challenge 2018
TheAsiaInnovationChallengeisacompetitionthatrequiresstudentsinSingapore(ITE,JuniorCollegesandPolytechnics)toteamupwithstudentsfromJapantoworkonprojects.Morethan80participantsfrombothcountriestookpartintheChallengeandseventeamsmadeittothefinals,heldon26August2018.
TwoITEstudentsfromtheHigher NitecinPassengerServicescourseandtheircounterpartsfromHongoHighSchoolinJapanclinchedthetopprize.TheirwinningprojectwasabusinessproposaltosellinsectrepellentclothinginBrunei,wheretherewerehighincidencesofdenguefever.Aspartoftheaward,theteamwassponsoredforatriptoBruneiinDecember2018.Anotherteam,comprisingtwoHigher Nitec inServiceManagementstudentsandtheircounterpartsfromHokkaiGakuenHighSchoolinJapan,weretheFirstRunner-up.

International Exhibition of Young Inventors 2018
Nine Electronics and Info-CommTechnology studentsparticipated in the International Exhibition forYoungInventors2018held inDelhi, India, from17to22October2018.Theyformedfourteamsandcompetedwithmorethan100teamsfrom12countries.Oneoftheprojects,MyBio,amedicalservicesorderingsystemdevelopedbyHigher NitecinBusinessInformationSystemsstudents,wonaGoldMedal.Another team comprising students from theNitec in Infocomm Technology coursewon the BronzeMedalandaSpecialAwardfortheirprojectonSpottingofTrappedVictimsduringaDisaster.TwomoreSpecialAwardswerealsopresentedtotheteamsfromITE.
Other Global Achievements
● LeoKohZeKai, aHigher Nitec in Electronics Engineering (IoT&Communications) student,wonthe Terry O’Banion Computer Champion Award.ThisannualAward isgivenbyTheLeagueforInnovationintheCommunityCollege,USA,tohonourthreestudentswithspecialtalentintechnology,strongfinancialneedandapassionforacareerintechnology.
● ITEwon theglobalfinalof theSocial Innovation Relay, acompetition thatchallenges teams todevelopinnovativebusinessconceptsthataddresssocialneeds.Itisopentostudentsaged15to19andinvolvedover14,000studentsfrom10countries.
CELEBRATING STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS
CongratulationstotheCollegesandstudentsfortheirachievementsforthefollowingcompetitionsinFY2018:
● Fifteenstudentscompetedandwontwo Silver Medals,eight Bronze Medals and one 1st Runner Up placementatoneofthemostprestigiousculinarycompetitionsinAsia–theFood & Hotel Asia Culinary Challenge.
● IrfanZailan,aPastry&Bakingstudent,competedintheSingapore Bake-A-Star Championship–CakeCategory(PetitGateaux)withhislecturerandemergedChampioninhiscategory.TheteamrepresentedSingaporeintheWorldChampionshipinearly2019.

TheicingonthecakefortheyearisnodoubtITE’ssuccessfulrenewaloftheSQASC.TheAward,laudedasthepinnacleoforganisationalexcellenceinSingapore,wasfirstpresentedtoITEinOctober2011.Sevenyearslater,ITEwontheAwardasecondtimeandareamongthefirstbatchofSQASCorganisationstohavesuccessfullyrenewedthisnationalaward.ThisisastrongtestamentofITE’scommitmenttowardsprovidingtechnicaleducationandtrainingofthehighestquality.

Forthefirsttime,ITEparticipatedinaNationalDayParadesegmentonalargescale.Almost600 staff,students and alumnivolunteeredtheirweekendstoputonaperformancetitledOur People,Our Home,whichshowcasedSingapore’s transformation journeyandpeople fromdifferentoccupationsworkingtogether forabetter future.Theeightmonthsofpreparationandrehearsalsweretough,butthe ITEcontingent’senthusiasticdisplayearnedthempraisesfromtheNDPShowChairmanandthepublic.
ITE Visual Arts Show 2018
ThebiennialITEVisualArtsShowtookplaceon18OctoberatITECollegeEastin2018.AFlashMobwithhighly-energeticdancersopenedtheshow,whichfeatured300artworksby1,500ITEstudentsandstaff,and600communitypartners.ThisinstalmentoftheVisualArtsShowexploreddifferentinterpretationsofthetheme,Perspectives.Whatwasspecialaboutthisshowwasthat50oftheartpieceswerecreatedwithcommunitypartners–thehighestnumbersincetheVisualArtShowstartedin2012.MsSimAnn,SeniorMinisterofStateforMinistryofCulture,CommunityandYouth,wastheGuest-of-Honourfortheevent.
Conference on Drone Technology for Urban Solutions
On23 January2019, ITE, togetherwithScienceCentreSingapore,held itsfirstConferenceonDroneTechnologyforUrbanSolutions.TheConferenceservedasaplatformfordroneindustryprofessionals,researchersandconsumerstosharethelatestindronetechnologyinnovationsandapplications.Some350 participants fromother InstitutesofHigherLearningand industrypartnerswerepresentat theevent,whichwasgracedbySeniorMinisterofStateforMinistryofTransportandMinistryofHealth,DrLamPinMin.
International TVET Conference 2018
ITEheld itsfifthtriennial InternationalTVETConferenceatRafflesCityConventionCentreon3and4October2018.Thetwo-dayevent,whereMinister forEducation,MrOngYeKung,wastheGuest-of-HonourattheOpeningCeremony,attracted400 delegatesfrom19 countries.
FifteenspeakersandfourFacilitators,comprisingacademics,policymakers,andindustrypractitioners,shared insightsandspokepassionatelyon the theme, Industry Transformation: Imperatives for Future Skills and Learning.AnExecutiveLearningProgrammetoITECollegeWestandNgeeAnnPolytechnicwasarrangedon5Octoberforthe70foreignparticipants.Thefeedbackgarneredfromtheeventwasoverwhelminglypositive.

AspartofthePublicSectorTransformationmovement,thePoly-ITE-SSGDigitalisationCommitteehelditsinauguralDigitalisationSeminar&ExhibitionatITECollegeWeston14November.Thefivepolytechnics,ITEandSkillsFutureSingapore(SSG)showcasedatotalof25digitalisationinitiatives,whichcoveredfourareas–DataAnalytics,ProcessAutomation,Culture&CapabilityBuildingandCustomer-centricServices.Theeventwasgracedby thenSecondPermanentSecretary (Education),MrLaiChungHan,andwasattendedbyover350 stafffromMOE,thepolytechnics,ITEandSSG.
Work-Learn Technical Diploma (WLTD) Signing Ceremony 2018
MinisterforEducation,MrOngYeKung,launchedthefirstfourWLTDsin2017inanefforttoprovidemorepathwaysandupgradingopportunitiesforITEgraduates.On2November2018,Ministerwasinvitedtolaunchanother10WLTDsataSigningCeremony,bringingthetotalnumberofWLTDsofferedto14.
TheWLTDSigningCeremony2018saw113 companiespledgingtheirsupport.ThesecompaniesincludeChevalierSingapore,ConradCentennial,ExxonMobil,KeppelOffshoreMarine,ResortsWorldSentosaandTouchCommunityServices.ITEtargetstoprovideWLTDplacesforsevenpercentofeachcohortby2022.
Funds for a Brighter Future
ITE is fortunate to have the endorsement and support of industries and individuals. In 2018, twocompanieshaveextendedtheirgenerositytoITEbydonatingatotalof$12milliontohelpsupportITEstudentsintheireducationjourney.On3August,KeppelCorporationpresentedITEwithachequefor$10millionincelebrationofits50thAnniversary.Twomonthslater,on24October,WorldwideHotelsGroupcontributed$2milliontowardstheITEEducationFundaspartofits25thAnniversarycelebrations.Theirdonationswillhelpgreatlyingivingfinancially-disadvantagedITEstudentsamuch-neededboost,andITEisgratefultothemfortheirgenerosity.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR FY20192018wasa fulfillingyear for ITE.Newpartnershipswereforged,oldonesrenewed.Staff,studentsandtheorganisationasawhole,performedwellandearnedseveralaccoladesandawards.2019willpresentITEwithnewchallengesandopportunities,andwewillcontinuetorespondwithagility,deliverresultsandgiveourstudentstheHigh-tech,High-touchandHigh-trustcareerandtechnicaleducationtheyhavecometoexpectfromus.
WithourfifthStrategicPlan,ITE Trailblazer,comingtoanendin2019,itistimeforITEtoplanthenextwave.Toreflectthis,thecorporatethemeforFY2019willbeNew Wave,New Future.
While we continue to strengthen and refine our core areas in Pre-Employment Training and ContinuingEducationandTraining,weall alsomove forwardasanorganisation toembracedigitalisation furtherandremainadaptiveandnimbleinafast-changinglandscape.Tohelpusdothis,ITEwillfocusonfourkeythrusts:
