Dear Parents/ Carers,
ROCKETING AROUND THE SCHOOL WITH MR PITT
K Dingo: On Monday morning I visited KD during maths time. The children were working very hard to come up with
different combinations to 5. Children used the mini-whiteboards to represent their work as well as different
resources. I was able to sit with each group and ask lots of questions to ensure the children knew what the task was
and could do it independently or with assistance from a friend or a teacher. After the maths lesson, children sat on
the floor as it was time for ’Munch n Crunch’. It was pleasing to see lots of KD children eating such yummy, fresh
fruit!
4 Bennelong: On Monday afternoon I visited 4B during maths rotation. Each rotation was connected to various number
activities. Some of the activities included equivalent fraction pizza bingo, matching factors and multiples jigsaw cards,
multiplication dice game and number sentences, digit and arrays matching. The children were engaged at each rotation and
worked well when completing tasks with a partner. It was also great to see children not give up when confronted with difficulty.
Lots of sweaty brains in 4B today! Check out some of my photos in this edition of the newsletter.
CLOSE CIRCUIT TELEVISION (CCTV) AT FAIRVALE PS
Over the past 12 months there has rarely been a Monday morning where I haven’t been informed that our school
grounds have been vandalised. Sometimes, our neighbours contact the school to say people have been in our
school over the weekend. With the support of the Parent Group and staff, a CCTV system will be installed at our
school. The system will be clearly visible with signs notifying people that they may be under video surveillance
when entering the site. The school has sought expert advice as to where the cameras will be placed. I will inform the
community in writing once the installation has occurred and when the surveillance will commence.
FAIRVALE PARENT GROUP EASTER RAFFLE
As part of our Parent Group fundraising, our annual Easter Raffle will take place. We are asking families to sell 12
tickets. They are $1.00 each or $10.00 per booklet. Tickets, sold and unsold, and money are to be returned to the
school office by Tuesday 9 April. The raffle will be drawn at our Easter Hat Parade on Thursday 11 April, 2019. As
always, there will be lots of baskets to be won! Tickets will be going home very soon.
SRC MUFTI DAY—CAMP QUALITY
Next Tuesday 26 March, our SRC will hold its first fundraiser for the year by raising funds for Camp Quality. Camp Quality is an
organisation created to provide support for children and their families from the first experience of cancer through every stage,
from treatment to remission. They provide innovative programs and services to develop life skills and
strengthen the wellbeing of children growing up with cancer with the key message that ‘laughter is the
best medicine’. To support this great charity children can come to school on this day wearing their
brightest and most colourful clothing—we ask that children donate a gold coin donation to Camp
Quality.
Have a great fortnight,
Anthony Pitt

Take a break with Mrs Karam!
We offer a range of extra curricular activities for our students at Fairvale Public School. These include;
gardening club, chess club, dance groups and sporting teams. Every week I will be visiting a ‘break activity’
group and I plan to showcase the wonderful learning and engagement in the Newsletter each fortnight. This
term I will be visiting the PSSA season 1 teams. I look forward to sharing our break activities with our
community in the next edition of the newsletter in week 10.
Tell Them From Me Survey
On Tuesday a range of students from Year 4—6 participated in the Tell Them From Me survey. This survey
asked our students vital questions about their learning and overall enjoyment at school. We are looking
forward to analysing the results in Term 2. In Semester 2 we will be conducting another survey which will be
focused on our Parents and community members.
Stewart House
We are supporting the Stewart House organisation and we are asking families to donate $2 towards this
great organisation. Families who donate will also have the chance to win a $4000 family holiday to a
destination of their choice. Envelopes are due back to school by Friday 24th May.
Every year 1,700 public school children attend Stewart House which is a safe haven next to Curl Curl beach
at no cost to their parents or carers. Children participate in educational programs and excursions designed
to develop their social and emotional skills, build self-esteem and improve their overall well-being.

7 March 2019 Term 1, Week 6
Who loves healthy eating? WE DO! At OSHClub, we love to
embrace our understanding of healthy eating and how important
it is to consume fruits and vegetables daily. We tailor our menu
according to what the children enjoy eating and what they
haven’t tried before! Strawberries, watermelon, apples, oranges,
bananas, passionfruit, lychees, celery, cucumber, carrots,
tomatoes, capsicum, you name it! We eat together and share our
fun of trying new fruits and vegetables.
This week we participated in a little week of Italy
by creating our own mini pizzas! The children
enjoyed spreading their tomato paste, spreading
cheese, our favourite toppings and watching it
cook! The children were able to express their
individuality by making their own creation. Not
only was it fun to make, but also so yummy to eat!
As parents, homework can be a little overwhelming,
especially seeing how techniques have changed since
going to school yourself. OSHClub hosts HOMEWORK
CLUB, where your children can get support and help
with the difficult questions, see some of their friends
outside of school and also get to fill their bellies with
some Healthy Afternoon Tea. If you have any
questions, please come by the Hall and talk to the
friendly OSHClub staff.

DRIVING AND PARKING SAFELY NEAR OUR SCHOOL
You can help keep children safe by remembering the
following:
drop your child off and pick them up on the school
side of the road.
Never call out to them from across the road—it is very
dangerous
Always take extra care in 40km school zones.
Follow all parking signs—these help keep your child as
safe as possible.
Park responsibly even if it means you have to walk
further to the school gate.
Never double park—it is illegal and puts children at
risk,
Never do a U-turn or a three point turn outside the
school as it puts children at risk of harm.
Model safe and considerate pedestrians and driver
behaviours to your child.
Always give way to
pedestrians particularly
when entering and leaving
driveways.
Our school is committed to providing a positive and
harmonious learning environment, where we strive
to respect the cultural linguistic and religious
backgrounds of our Fairvale community. The
Department of Education has an Anti-Racism policy
which aims to eliminate racism and supports Anti-
racism education to ensure all guidelines are met.
Our school has trained an Anti-Racism Contact
Officer (ARCO) who is happy to assist in any issues
or matters relating to racism.
Please contact Mrs Pereira, our ARCO (Anti-Racism
Contact Officer)

This Saturday 23 March, 2019, Fairvale PS will be open for voting at the State Election. As in previous years, the school
will be holding a sausage sizzle fundraising event on this day. All monies raised will go towards the Year 6 2019
Farewell to be held at the end of the year. Every year we hold quite a few Year 6 fundraising activities to ensure the
cost of the Farewell is kept to a minimal cost for every child. Come over and say hi and purchase a sausage sizzle and
can of drink—tell your neighbours and local friends as well.
Look who’s coming to visit!

21 March 2019 Term 1, Week 8
Following on from the AFL clinics held last Monday during class time, we had the first of the After-School
AFL sessions on Monday of this week. Despite the intermittent wet weather, we had 44 students who
attended. There are still about 20 spaces available and it is not too late to register. You can register and pay
online as per brochure sent home last week, or if this is not possible, you will be able to fill out a form on
the day and pay your $10 (which is heavily reduced). This is a very cheap program and apart from being fun,
it will also introduce your child to the sport of AFL.
See Mr Kinniburgh if you have any questions.
Last Thursday, six Year 4 and 5 students went to Fairfield HS to participate in an academic challenge. This
event is designed to encourage teamwork, collaboration, leadership, creativity and ability to solve problems
posed. The challenges this term were science and music related. Declan N, William C and Nathan N were our
Year 4 representatives with the team and Amanda D, Nathan C and Leon S were our Year 5 representatives.
Their first challenge was a science challenge and the students were asked to design and construct a boat out
of a large envelope and sticky tape, that would hold as many bananas as possible. They assigned their roles
and then worked together to come up with a design that would achieve their objective. The team then set
about making their boat.
The second challenge for the day was to learn to play a ukulele in time with the rest of their group. Whilst
some found this easy, others found it a little challenging.
Further Challenges will take place in Terms 2, 3 and 4 across a number of different subject areas. A school
will be awarded champion school once all challenges have been completed.
