Introduction to the word by word translation

This word by word translation has been designed to encourage reading and connecting with

this ziyarat in the original Arabic text.

This format provides the reader with a quick reference for the basic meaning of the Arabic

words. As with the Quran and the words of the Ahlul Bayt (as), many words will have deeper

meanings, so the translations provided below should not be taken as absolute, but only as a

first level understanding.

The recommended way of reading the ziyarat in this format is to read it in Arabic, and only look

down at the meaning if one does not know the meaning of a particular word. The goal is to

eventually read the ziyarat in Arabic, without needing the translation at all.

We pray that this effort helps readers connect with the words of the Imams at a deeper level

such that it moves the heart and makes the reader a more devoted and sincere follower of the

Ahlul Bayt (as), and we pray that this effort is accepted by Allah and the Holy Masumeen.

الله عبد أباياعليكالسالم Peace upon you oh father of servant of Allah

الله رس ول ابنياعليكالسالم Peace upon you oh son of prophet of Allah

ي رةالله ياعليكالسالم ي رت هوابنخ خ Peace upon you oh choice of Allah and the son of his choice

Ya Ali

ن يأم ي ابنياعليكالسالم الم ؤم Peace upon you oh son of the commander of the believers

and the son of the master of the successors Peace upon you oh Ya Ali

العالم ين ساء سيدة فاط مةابنson of Fatima the master of the women of the worlds

Ya Ali

وابنالله ثارياعليكالسالم Peace upon you oh (one) (whose) avenger (is) Allah and the son of

Ya Ali الموت وروالو ت رثار ه

one whose avenger is He and (you are) the unavenged the one who has yet to seek revenge Ya Ali

ب ف نائ كحلتالت الرواح على وعليكالسالم Peace upon you and upon the souls who dismounted in your vicinity*

يعا م ن عليك م ماأبدا الله سالم ج Upon you all from me all peace of Allah forever (as long as)

*Subnote from Kamil Al-Ziyarat published by shiabooks.ca (2008): It is important to note that this

statement refers to the souls who dismounted at his vicinity … and not the bodies. Therefore, the inner

meaning of this statement is, “Salaam to the souls who dismounted from their bodies and were

martyred with Imam Husain and were buried with him in the same land.”

unbearable and great (is) the calamity for you (for you all) Ya Ali

Ya Ali يبت كعظ متوجلتو م ص ف

and unbearable and great your calamity in Ya Ali

يع علىالسماوات ف لعن السماوات أهل ج the heavens upon all the people of the heavens So cursed*

Ya Ali

والظلم أساسأسستأ مة الله Allah (the) nation (that) founded the foundation of oppression and

Ya Ali لعنو الب يت أهلعليك مالور

the injustice upon you all the people of the house and cursed Ya Ali

ومقام ك معندف عتك مأ مة الله Allah nation drove you all from your positions and

Ya Ali الله رت بك م الت مرات ب ك م عنأزالتك م

dethroned you from your posts (in) which placed you Allah Ya Ali

ق ت لتك مأ مة الله لعنو ف يهاin it and cursed Allah (the) nation killed you all

Ya Ali ب التمك ي ل مالم مهد ينالله لعنو

and cursed Allah the facilitators for them by enabling Ya Ali

* Although the literal meaning of لعن is ‘he cursed’ (past tense), it is commonly translated as ‘May He

curse’, similar to هللارحم (literally: Allah had mercy) being translated and used as ‘May Allah have mercy’.

Ya Ali إ نأباعبد الله يا أول يائ ه موأت باع ه م

their followers and their loyalists Oh Aba ’Abdillah Verily I am Ya Ali

لم ل منحرب وسالمك مل منس at peace with whoever is at peace with you and at war with whoever

Ya Ali لعنو الق يامة ي وم إ لحاربك م

is at war with you until the day of the judgement and cursed Ya Ali

مروانآلوز ياد آلالله Allah the family of Ziyad and the family of Marwan

Ya Ali قاط بة أ ميةبن الله لعنو

and cursed Allah children of Ummayads all of them Ya Ali

و مرجانةابنالله لعنوand cursed Allah son of Marjanah and

Ya Ali وسعد بنع مرالله لعن

cursed Allah Umar son of Sa’ad and Ya Ali

را الله لعن الله لعنو ش cursed Allah Shimr and cursed Allah

Ya Ali ت ن قبتوألمتوأسرجتأ مة

the community (that) saddled and gave reins to and masked them Ya Ali

ل ق تال ك لقد أ ميوأنتب أب for fighting you By my father for you and my mother Is

Ya Ali عظ م الذ ياللهفأسأل ب كم صاب

difficult my calamity with you So I ask Allah who Ya Ali

Ya Ali منص ور إ مام معثار كطلبي رز قن

he grant me to seek your revenge with an Imam supported Ya Ali

الله صلىم مد ب يت أهل م نfrom people of the house of Muhammad send blessings Allah

Ya Ali ع ندكاجعلن الله م آل ه وعليه

on him and his family Oh Allah make me with you Ya Ali

يها السالمعليهب ال سي وج ن ياف الدdignified by Husain on him the peace in the dunya

Ya Ali رة و أت قرب إ نأباعبد الله يا الخ

and the hereafter Oh Aba ‘Abdillah Verily I (seek) nearness Ya Ali

ورس ول ه إ لوالله إ لto Allah and to his prophet and

Ya Ali ن يأم ي إ ل فاط مةإ لو الم ؤم to the master of believers and to Fatima

Ya Ali ب واالت كإ ليكوالسن إ لو

and to Hasan and to you by loyalty to you Ya Ali

نصبوقات لكم نب الب راءة وand by disassociating from whoever killed you and set up

Ya Ali أسسم نب الب راءة والربلك

(against) you war and by disassociating from whoever founded Ya Ali

و عليك مالور والظلم أساسthe foundation of oppression and injustice upon you and

Ya Ali رس ول ه إ لوالله إ لأب رأ

I disassociate to Allah and to his prophet Ya Ali

ب نوذل كأساسأسسم نfrom whoever founded the foundation (of) that and built

Ya Ali يانه عليه جرىو ب ن ه ف ظ لم on it the structure (of oppression) and continued in its oppression

Ya Ali أشياع ك معلىوعليك مجور ه و

and its injustice on you and on your devotees Ya Ali

ن ه مإ ليك موالله إ لبر ئت م I disassociate to Allah and to you from them

Ya Ali إ ليك مث الله إ لأت قرب و

and I seek nearness to Allah and then to you Ya Ali

ب الب راءة و ول يك مم واالة وب واالت ك مby loyalty to you and loyalty to your wali and by disassociating

Ya Ali ب يوأعدائ ك مم ن الربلك م الناص from your enemies and the ones who incited (against) you war

Ya Ali أت باع ه موأشياع ه مم نب الب راءة و

and by disassociating from their devotees and their followers Ya Ali

لم إ ن حرب وسالمك مل منس Verily I am at peace (with) whoever is at peace with

you and at war

Ya Ali يوحاربك مل من واالك مل منول

(with) whoever is at war with you and a friend of whoever is a friend to you Ya Ali

اللهفأسأل عاداك مل منعد ويوand an enemy to whoever is your enemy So I ask Allah

Ya Ali عر فت ك مأكرمن الذ ي أول يائ ك ممعر فة وب

who honored me (with) knowing you and knowledge of your friends Ya Ali

أن أعدائ ك مم نالب راءةرزقن وand granted me disassociation from your enemies that

Ya Ali

معك ميعلن ن ياف رة والد الخ he places me with you in the dunya and the hereafter

Ya Ali ي ثبتأنو قدمع ندك مل

and that he makes firm for me with you (my) foot Ya Ali

دق ص ن ياف رة والد و الخ (on the path of) truth in the dunya and the hereafter and

Ya Ali

لك مالمحم ودالمقامي ب لغن أنأسأل ه I ask him that he makes me attain the status praiseworthy (that you have)

Ya Ali طلبي رز قن أنو الله ع ندwith Allah and that he grants me to seek

Ya Ali )مهد ي(ه د ىإ مام مع)ثارك م(ثار ي

my revenge (your revenge) with an Imam guided (guiding) Ya Ali

ر نك مب القناط ق ظاه أسأل و م clear speaking with the truth from you and I ask

Ya Ali قك مالله لك مالذ يب الشأن وب Allah by your right and by the rank which you have

Ya Ali

ي عط ين أنع نده أفضلب ك مب صاب with him that he gives me for my suffering with you the best

Ya Ali يبت ه م صابا ي عط يما يبة ب ص مام ص

what he has given a sufferer for his suffering A calamity not Ya Ali

رز ي ت هاأعظموأعظمها سالم ف ال greater than it and greater catastrophe than it in Islam

Ya Ali و يع ف الرض والسماوات ج

and in all the skies and the earth Ya Ali

اجعلن الله م م نهذامقام يف Oh Allah make me in my place this from those who

Ya Ali

ورحة وصلوات م نكت نال ه receive from you blessings and mercy and

Ya Ali م مد ميامياياجعلالله م مغف رة

forgiveness Oh Allah make my life (like) the life of Muhammad Ya Ali

وم مد آل و ماتمات and the family of Muhammad and my death (like) the death of

Ya Ali إ نالله م م مد آل وم مد Muhammad and the family of Muhammad Oh Allah verily

Ya Ali ب ن و)ف يه (ب ه ت ب ركتي وم هذاthis day (considered) as blessed by it (in it) the children of

Ya Ali اللع ي الكباد آك لة ابن وأ مية

Umayya and the children of the eater of the livers the cursed Ya Ali

ل سان ول سان كعلىاللع ي ابن son of the cursed on your tongue and tongue

Ya Ali آل ه وعليه الله صلىنب يك

your prophet bless (oh) Allah on him and his family Ya Ali

وقفموق ف وموط ن ك لف in every place and stopping place stopped

Ya Ali وعليه الله صلىنب يكف يه in it your prophet bless (oh) Allah on him and

Ya Ali وس فيانأباالعنالله م آل ه

his family Oh Allah curse father of Sufyan and Ya Ali

عليه مم عاو يةبنيز يدوم عاو يةMu’awiyah and Yazid son of Mu’awiya on them

Ya Ali هذاو الب د ينأبداللعنة م نك

from you the curse for ever everlasting and this Ya Ali

Ya Ali الله صلوات ال سيب قتل ه م مروانآل

the family of Marwan for their killing Hussain blessings of Allah Ya Ali

عليه م فضاع فالله م السالم عليه on him peace Oh Allah so multiply upon them

Ya Ali الله م الل يمالعذابوم نكاللعن

the curse from you and the punishment severe Oh Allah Ya Ali

إ ليكأت قرب إ ن الي وم هذاف verily I seek nearness to you in this day

Ya Ali و أيام وهذاموق ف يف

and in my stopping place this and the days of Ya Ali

ن ه مب الب راءة حيات عليه ماللعنة وم my life with disassociation from them and cursing upon them

Ya Ali نب يكآل ول نب يكب الم واالة و

and with loyalty to your prophet and the family of your prophet Ya Ali

السالم عليه م وعليه on him and on them peace

Say 100 Times:

حقظلمظال أولالعنالله مOh Allah curse the first oppressor oppressed the right of

Ya Ali روم مد آل وم مد آخ Muhammad and the family of Muhammad and the last

Ya Ali العن الله م ذل كعلىله تاب ع

follower to him on this Oh Allah curse Ya Ali

Ya Ali يعا العن ه مالله مق تل ه علىوتاب عت ج

and followed on his killing Oh Allah curse them all Ya Ali

الله عبد أباياعليكالسالم Peace upon you oh father of the servant of Allah

Ya Ali ب ف نائ كحلتالت الرواح علىو

and on the souls that dismounted in your vicinity Ya Ali

ماأبدا الله سالم م نعليكUpon you from me peace of Allah for ever (as long as)

Ya Ali

الن هار والليل بق يوبق يت I remain and remain the night and the day

and not make Allah the last time Ya Ali

ال سي علىالسالم ل ز يارت ك مم نfrom me to visit you Peace on Husain

Ya Ali وال سي بن عل يعلىو

and on Ali son of Husain and Ya Ali

أصحاب علىوال سي أوالد علىon the children of Husain and on the companions of

Ya Ali ظال أولأنتخ صالله م ال سي Husain Oh Allah apportion you the first oppressor

Ya Ali أوال ب ه ابدأوم نب اللعن

with curses from me and begin with it the first Ya Ali

وخام سا يز يدالعنالله م الراب عthe fourth Oh Allah curse Yazid the fifth and

Ya Ali وز ياد بنالله ع ب يدالعنcurse Ubaidallah son of Ziyad and

Ya Ali سعد بنع مرو مرجانةابن

son of Marjanah and Umar son of Sa’ad Ya Ali

را و آلوش س فيان أب and Shimr and the family of Abu Sufyan

Ya Ali مروانآلوز ياد آلو

and the family of Ziyad and the family of Marwan Ya Ali

الق يامة ي وم إ لuntil the day of standing

Ya Ali Go in Sajdah & Recite:

لكالشاك ر ينحدالمد لكالله مOh Allah to you (is) the praise the praise of the grateful to you

Ya Ali عظ يم علىل له المد م صاب معلى

(in) their calamities The Praise to Allah on the great Ya Ali

ي ومال سي شفاعةارز قن الله م رز يت my misfortune Oh Allah grant me the intercession of Husain (on) the day of

Ya Ali ث بتو الو ر ود دق قدمل ص

entering (the desert of judgement)) and make firm for me (my) foot (on the path of) truth Ya Ali

ال سي أصحاب وال سي معع ندكwith you with Husain and the companions of Husain

who exerted their sacrifice in place of Husain on him peace Ya Ali Ya Ali
