Ways YOU can help therecycling process...

l Please only recycle clean and dry items

l Only place items in loose, pleasedon’t put them in carrier bags

l No need to squash cans and bottles

l No black plastic

l Keep paper flat and break large cardboard boxes into smaller pieces.

Cling films, container seals, crisp packetsand expanded polystyrene are NOTrecyclable, but they are light and easilymissed if amongst other items. They blow about at the sorting plantjamming up the machinery.

First the items are sorted byhand to remove the items ofrubbish that have been putinto the recycling by mistake.

Then the glass issmashed and fallsthrough the conveyorbelt to separate itfrom the other items

Next a ballistic separatorsorts flat items like paperfrom 3D items like cans andbottles which roll away.

Paper and card aresorted by hand.

Then the 3D items are separated.Magnets are used to remove thesteel cans from the conveyor belt.

Next optical sorters shine lightson the plastics to sort them intodifferent types and colours.Black plastic is not detected as itdoesn’t reflect light.

Eddy-current separators, whichwork like magnets in reverse, areused to propel the aluminiumcans off of the conveyor belt.

Lastly quality control check that thesorted materials are as pure aspossible. They are baled and taken toother plants to be processed furtherbefore they are made into new things.
