What is Instagram?

Have you ever been on Facebook and seen pictures that seem to have some sort of elegant vintage to them?

Instagram is a free photo App that up until April 3, 2012, was not available to phones other than Apple users. But now it is available for Android users as well.

This App allows users to change the appearance of a simple photograph taken on their phone to one that looks professionally done.

In 2011…*7 million users worldwide

*Over 150 million pictures have been uploaded, average 15 per second.

*8/10 of all photos uploaded have had a filter

Creating an Account

Just like any other network, Instagram requires the user to create an account with a password and username. (Similar to Facebook, Twitter, etc.)

Even though it is an App, it is considered a Social Network. It is not just a photo editor.

History The “CEO” of Instagram is Kevin

Systrom. He began researching the App in San Francisco. Surprisingly, he had no formal engineering training and now. It been around for about two years now.

Facebook has agreed to acquire mobile photo sharing application Instagram and its team for about $1 billion in cash and Facebook stock

Features

Follow other users’ photo streams as they post them. People can follow you back. Unless a user is set to private, you can automatically follow them.

“Profile” button at the bottom right at the screen allows you to search for friends by name or find ones that are already connected to you by another social network.

The “home” button is your news feed icon where all of the people’s pictures will show. (who you follow)

You can like or comment on any pictures in your news feed.

The “Popular” section (star or heart) helps you find creative followers and some of the most interesting photos to look at.

Once you have taken the picture, you can choose from multiple settings (filters). Including a blur button, boarder button, and a contrast button. These features can be previewed before actually choosing.

Once your photo is ready you can upload it not only to Instagram, but to other social networks. You may caption your picture also.

Teacher Use and UDL

Photography class. As for the social networking part, you could form

your own class group and comment on each others pictures leaving settings to private.

*Multiple means of representation (different visual alternatives illustrated through multiple medias. Highlight critical features).

*Provide multiple means of action and expression (provides options for communication)

*Provide multiple means of engagement (individual choice and preferences amongst Instagram).
