There are two hotel classification systems in Switzerland. You will find information on both systems at www.hotelleriesuisse.ch and www.gastrosuisse.ch.

In harmony with nature.Wellness where even the backdrop is uplifting

Sparkling mountain lakes, thundering waterfalls, still forests and the purest air: nature has a decisive effect on human wellbeing. In Switzerland, such features are in plentiful supply. It’s never far from a hiking trail to the next mountain lake, or from a ski piste to the nearest thermal baths. Many spas offer the finest natural vantage points – take the Kurhaus Cademario, for example, with heavenly views of Lake Lugano. Everywhere, nature sets the tone – as at the Wellness Destination of Gstaad with its attrac-tive alpine treatments.

Oases of relaxation.Take a step to promote your personal wellbeing – you won’t regret it. Switzerland has all you need for a de-stressing break with lasting effect: inspiring natural landscapes, beautiful Wellness Hotels to pamper you from head to toe, and certified Wellness Destinations that promise the ultimate in relaxation.

A taste for wellness.Fine food belongs at the heart of any wellbeing programme

Wellness represents a holistic concept of health. This em-braces a varied diet and inventive cuisine: defining features of Swiss gastronomy. Each region has its specialities; great value is placed on authenticity and quality. The Hotel Adula in Flims, for example, has been celebrating traditional Grau-bünden cuisine for four generations; at “The Restaurant” of The Dolder Grand in Zurich, the celebrated chef Heiko Nieder thrills guests with his innovative gourmet cuisine.

Fountains of health.Water from deep in the mountains is a blessing for the body

Rich in minerals and trace elements, the thermal spring water so cherished by the ancient Romans tingles on the skin. Today, guests enjoy its relaxing effects at a variety of attractive venues from the elegant thermal spa of the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz to the spacious open-air thermal pools of Bad Zurzach.

You’ll find everything from sports training to pampering treatments and all-round relaxation at the Sal Aqua-Natura pool and sauna complex and in the Spa Medical Well-ness Center, while Papa Moll Land promises endless fun for children. Swiss secrets of aging well.Cherish health, eat wisely, be proactive, take time: experts have a better insight than ever into the essence of wellbeing. Today, Swiss hotels combine classic wellness practices with the latest medical therapies to lasting effect.

The surge of interest in aging well has spawned labels from “holistic well-ness” and “wellness plus” to “selfness” and “well-aging”. Whatever the pre-ferred name, Switzerland offers the perfect setting: at state-of-the-art ho-tel spas, highly trained therapists and doctors perform wonders while a

beautiful natural backdrop works its magic. Near Appenzell, for example, at the Hotel Hof Weissbad –Switzerland’s only certified F. X. Mayr centre – fast-ing cures help improve digestion and de tox the body. The Grand Resort Bad Ragaz, meanwhile, with its min-eral-rich thermal spring water and top-quality anti-aging treatments, is re-garded as Europe’s leading wellbeing & medical health resort. The Dolder Grand in Zurich is known for its indivi-dually tailored preventive therapies and its outstanding network of medical experts. Near Geneva, La Réserve Genève Hotel and Spa has gained renown for its Nescens “better-aging”

programmes. Aging well is not the exclusive domain of the luxury sector, however. Three- and four-star hotels are also supporting holistic, preventive wellness – adding services from nutri-tion advice and health coaching to stress management. The Engadin Scuol Samnaun region, home to the Swiss National Park, has gone a step further, pro mising gluten- and lactose-free holidays with participating hotels, guesthouses, restaurants and shops. Top-class facilities and a nat-ural setting that is good for body and soul: no wonder guests fall in love with Switzerland.

The symbol below denotes Switzerland’s first official Medical Wellness Hotels. Each of them has not only a large spa but also a skilled team of doctors and medical experts at guests’ disposal. All the venues place an overriding emphasis on controlled treatments: the role of Medical Wellness is to help guests deve-lop a healthy lifestyle and to support them in taking control of their own pre-ventive healthcare.

Bracing: sauna water to regulate humidity

Power of the peaks.Fresh air, pure water, lush alpine flora and magnificent views: the Swiss mountains have long given visitors a deep sense of wellbeing. Today, health specialists ex-pertly combine nature’s treasures, traditional methods and modern knowledge to beneficial, lasting effect.

One of the beauty secrets of the mountains is whey, a by-product from the manufacture of cheese. The calcium- rich milk serum contains many vitamins and was used long ago al ready as an elixir of beauty: in ancient Greek and Roman civilisations, people bathed in whey to keep their skin soft and silky. In the Swiss moun-tains, whey baths are popular once again: for example at the Chäseren-holz alpine pasture in the Wellness Destination of Weggis Vitznau Rigi. Attractions here include not only deli-cious fresh cheese but whey baths in a wooden tub – as well as an outdoor whirlpool bath, alpine sauna and plen-tiful hay promising a relaxing sleep. Other mountain regions also offer the much-loved whey baths – such as the Appenzellerland, where the practice enjoys a long tradition. Wherever the location, a whey bath always includes a breath taking view of the mountain

scenery from the tub. Such baths on alpine pastures are generally offered from early June to late August.

From the herb garden of the Alps Many plants that grow in our moun-tains are effective against fatigue and stress. For hundreds of years, local people have known that alpine plants can relieve exhaustion, stimulate circu-lation, quicken metabolism and re-lease tension. At the Parkhotel Belle-vue & Spa in Adelboden, for example, delicately scented flowers and plants growing in surrounding areas are used for their therapeutic qualities in baths, scrubs, packs and massages, with pleasantly invigorating effect.

Vinotherapy. Wine and the by-products of winemaking have a surprising variety of beneficial effects. Vinotherapy is used to stimu-late circulation, strengthen the immune system, encour-age metabolism of fats and improve blood flow. Venues offering treatments include the Hotel & Spa Cacciatori in Cademario or the Walliser Alpentherme & Spa in Leu-kerbad.

Apitherapy. The long-established tradi-tion of apitherapy involves the use of honey-bee pro-ducts for the prevention and treatment of illnesses. At the hotel Mirabeau & Alpine Re-sidence in Zermatt, for ex-ample, Valais alpine honey therapy detoxifies the skin and also features in anti-aging treatments.

The spacious spa (1,900 sq. m) boasts features including a Finnish sauna, bio-soft sauna, herbal steam bath, whirlpool bath and 25-metre sports pool; the modern gym and choice of massages are equally im-pressive.

Pure alpine charm: in one of the sau-nas, a rest room and two treatment rooms, you’d think you were in a ge nu-ine log cabin. But the whole spa offers a feast for the senses, with spe cialities including a honey-pine bath, massages such as the Matterhorn Touch and at-tractive multi-day packages. The moun-tain views from the outdoor whirlpool bath are gorgeous. The hotel, with its own flock of Valais Blacknose sheep, lies by the funicular.

Silver granite, glacial rock, soapstone: even the names of the materials have a poetic ring. The Mirabeau’s spa echoes the surrounding alpine nature with features such as a mountain crystal steam bath, Valais chalet sauna and soapstone herbal bath. Treat-ments including vinotherapy and a hot chocolate massage hint at the gastro-nomic pleasures that delight guests in the restaurant with views of the Mat-terhorn.
