The 2017-2018 School Year in Review

STUDENTS FROM KEHILLAH RELIGIOUS SCHOOL CELEBRATED graduation on Sunday, May 6, 2018. Children from Pre-K through 7th grade stood proudly on the bima while parents, grandparents, other relatives, and friends filled the sanctuary to enjoy the occasion. Each class performed a song about Kehillah’s annual theme—community! Seeing all of our students singing and enjoying themselves was a moment of great pride and inspiration for Rabbi Wechsler, Rabbi Taff, teachers, and me. Kehillah is the bridge that brought our families together under one umbrella, supported by our Jewish values and traditions. There many highlights of this past year. A few include: 1. The collaboration of the Education Committee, comprised of Congregation Beth Shalom and Mosaic Law Congregation parents.2. Friday night services at CBS with gourmet Shabbat dinners and student-led singing and learning.3. Our Hanukah celebration with student performances in both English and Hebrew.4. Seeing the benefits of the educational partnership between CBS and MLC, including increased class sizes, the bonds formed among students, and professional and lay leadership who worked tirelessly to make Kehillah a success. We look forward to seeing all of our students next fall! - Irit Winston, Director of Education & Youth

KOH Book Club: The Last Train To Istanbul by Ayse Hulin - Tuesday, June 12 at 7pm. An International bestseller by one of Turkey’s most beloved authors. This novel uncovers a little-known dramatic rescue through the fictional story of a Turkish family who, in 1943, is part of a group of Jewish evac-uees on a special train from Paris to Istanbul. The Turkish couple – Selva, a pretty Muslim, and Rafael, a handsome Jew – meet while at university in Istanbul. Having fallen deeply in love, they married in 1933, much against Selva’s father’s wishes. But when the Nazis invade France, the exiled loverswill learn that nothing—not war, not politics, not even religion—can break the bonds of family. Together, they must traverse a war-torn continent, crossing enemy lines and risking everything in a desperate bid for freedom. From Ankara to Paris, Cairo, and Berlin, Last Train to Istanbul is an uplifting tale of love and adventure from Turkey’s beloved bestselling novelist Ayşe Kulin. Everyone, including drop-ins, are welcome. For more information contact Valla Hoffman at 916-743-8247 or [email protected].

KOH Film Club: Blessed Is The Match – The Life and Death of Hannah Senesh - Tuesday, June 24 at 2pm. At only 22, Hungarian poet Hannah Senesh made the ultimate sacrifice – having already escaped Nazi-occupied Europe for Palestine and freedom, she returned, parachuting in behind enemy lines in a valiant effort to save Hungary’s Jews from deportation to Auschwitz and certain death. Captured immediately upon crossing the border into Hungary, Hannah was tortured and taken to a prison in Budapest, yet she refused to reveal the coordinates of her fellow resistance fighters - even when they also arrested her mother, Catherine. Narrated by AcademyAward® Nominee Joan Allen, Blessed is the Match is a truly moving memorial that brings to life this Holocaust heroine through interviews with Holocaust historians, eyewitness accounts from those on the rescue operation as well as in prison, rare family photographs and the writings of Hannah and her mother. Following the film, there will be a discussion led by Leslie Kuperstein. Not Rated. Run Time 84 minutes. There is a suggested $5 donation. For information & to RSVP contact Mehrnaz Halimi at [email protected] or 916.508.4571.

Stitched Together: Creating Needle Art, Friendships & Community with Josephin Sieroty - Wednesday, June 27 at 1:30pm. For the young and young-at-heart; men and women. The rhythmic, repetitive movements in needlework have been proven to provide therapeutic benefits as serotonin production induces a natural state of well-being and mindfulness. Stitched Together is anongoing class that is open to the entire community. Please bring your projects to work on or join us for the guidance and inspiration to chose a project that will meet your needs and interests. Instructors will be present to assist and answer questions. Josephin will bring the canvas to provide to participants and will demonstrate new stitches along with a short presentation on the history of needle arts. There is a $5 suggested donation.
