The Garbage Project

Began at the University of Arizona in 1973 As part of their research method, project personnel

have studied over 250,000 lbs of garbage from American households and Landfills since 1973.

Research Question: What can we learn about our own

society from the garbage we throw away?

THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD---Applied to History Class & Garbage ---

1) Research Question:What can you learn about a person/family from their garbage?

2) Hypothesis:If students investigate a particular set of garbage, then they will be able to find

out 6 different characteristics about the person/family who created it. (Step #1)

3) Methods:Random collection of household garbage. (Provided by teacher)

4) Data Collection:Record observations regarding data related to the problem you are interested

in. Listing out of garbage – and what can be determined. (Step #2)

5) Inferences/InterpretationWhat can you say about your hypothesis based on your observations? What

can you infer from the collected garbage? (Step 2 & 3)

6) Sharing your conclusionsScientists write reports and give presentations to inform others about their

research! In your case, Step #3 – Findings Report.

Step 1- Predictions

Brainstorm what you could learn about a person/family by going through their trash.

Discuss your ideas as a class and we will create a list of 6 predictions for this project

Step 2- Itemizing the Findings ---Data Collection---

With your group, you will need to separate all the garbage in your provided bag.

Next, you will need to fill out the “Step 2” section of your Write-up Packet.

For each item you find, you will need to write down what the item is and brainstorm what this could tell us about this person/family.

For example: What could you learn from this?

Step 3: Summarizing Your Findings

Your paragraph (write-up)

Topic Sentence: As one can clearly see, a lot can be learned about a family by examining their trash.

You will then apply each prediction that you copied down from the board to your trash. You need to find 2 pieces of garbage that could prove that information about your family.

A Bad Example The group determined that this person was

unhealthy and probably not in good shape. We figured this out because they had protein and chips. Those are foods that make a person gain weight.

Does one bag of chips really make you unhealthy? Instead, look at the whole itemized list and see if

you have trends (lots of fatty foods, salty snacks, etc.) EVERYONE has a cheat-day once in a while.

Look for other indicators of fitness/health aside from junk-food (vitamins, workout shoes, etc.)

Prediction Example: - Wealth

One thing a person might be able to tell about a family is how wealthy they are. In the bag, there were two coupons. One coupon was for Carter’s baby clothes, and one coupon was for baby formula. This could lead one to believe that the family is not in need of money. A family that throws away coupons that would save them money probably has enough money to survive on. Also found in the bag was a catalogue for a BMW 3 series SUV. BMW is normally considered a “luxury brand” which are generally more expensive than other car brads. If one is in need of a new car, and is able to purchase a new one that is a luxury brand, one may assume the family has a secure financial status. Given these items of garbage, the family that produced this garbage has higher than average wealth.

Wrap-up

For the wrap-up paragraph: Write down one thing that you think makes

your family unique. Also, you need to make a prediction

statement about who this family or person is. For instance: “Based on the evidence, this family is probably a single mother with two young girls.

Lastly, make a final statement about what can be learned by using garbage as a primary source.
