JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title: Pastoral Leader
Reports to: Assistant Principal (Student achievement and wellbeing)
Overall Responsibilities:
To provide assistance and support to the Assistant Principal.
To have shared responsibility for the operation of the Pastoral Support Offices and pastoral intervention packages
To be the lead colleague for a group of pupils with regards to their achievement
To be the lead professional for pupils who are members of vulnerable groups (with Education Health Care Plans, low attendance, children looked after etc.)
To work closely with the Assistant Principal with regards to any student matters
To be an initial point of contact in the day-to-day running of pastoral support, acting as a triage to deal with concerns raised or to identify the colleague who can best deal with this and support the actions of that colleague
To be the point of contact for families and external agencies for a significant group of pupils
To lead on uniform, attendance, punctuality, behaviour and safeguarding issues for a significant group of pupils
To assist the Assistant Principal in the further development of the pastoral support system
Main Duties – some of which will overlap with others in the team:
1. To effectively liaise with school staff, parent/ carers and other outside agencies in developing support for students, ensuring confidentiality at all times.
2. To organise, run or contribute to meetings and other events, and as appropriate take notes or minutes, distribute papers, brief other staff, keep records and ensure appropriate follow up.
3. To liaise with the attendance lead regarding student attendance including liaising with Educational Welfare where appropriate.

4. To make phone calls and follow up attendance concerns daily, including for all pupils who are absent on each day.
5. As part of a team, to run and supervise isolation for pupils who have been referred to isolation or removed from lessons.
6. As part of a team, to run and supervise pupils who have not gained golden time, some corrections (detentions) and other similar sanctions.
7. To manage, run and co-ordinate re-integration meetings and all other follow up according to the school policy when pupils have been sanctioned beyond a correction.
8. To organise and process fixed-term exclusions as directed by the Principal.
9. To co-ordinate the collection, completion and return of school work for pupils who are absent for health or behavioural reasons.
10.To ensure that all behavioural issues are dealt with according to the school systems, liaising with and supporting teachers and senior leaders and ensuring no issues ‘fall through the gaps’ in the context of a busy school day.
11.To ensure that students are support through any period of transition.
12.Where directed, take the lead role in representing the school, including in external meetings and with families.
13.To prepare the senior staff and teachers for meetings and engagements involving pupils, ensuring appropriate files and documentation are available and ensuring smooth and effective relationships with a wide variety of people and/or agencies within and outside the School and attend meetings with or in place of Senior Staff and teachers.
14.Co-ordinate and organise year group events including assemblies.
15.Work with and lead a group of tutors in establishing positive relationships with young people.
16.To process and post all other documentation, making summaries and digests as required and ensuring the Leadership Team is briefed on internal and external matters.
17.To develop and maintain filing systems (both paper and electronic) and ensure ease of access to necessary documents and information and liaise with the Leadership Team on student data storage and requests for information.
18.To undertake data analysis and make proposals to the Leadership Team for effective developments in pastoral support.
19.To word-process and produce a range of documents including personal confidential/sensitive data.

20.To deal with members of the public and external agencies on behalf of the school and to maintain effective public relations for the school.
21.To organise events and travel arrangements.
22.To ensure that all documents and records relating to statutory duties and compliance are effectively organised and retained.
23.To contribute to the student experience through events/activities.

and for raising any concerns in line with School procedures.
25.To collectively ensure the wellbeing of students and to do whatever is necessary to ensure this is the first priority.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Qualifications / Training
GCSE Maths and English (Grade A*-C) or equivalent
Customer services training or equivalent
Equality and Diversity training
Recent EHA / Safeguarding training or any training relevant to effective pastoral student support
Knowledge / Experience Experience of scheduling
complex arrangements
Extensive knowledge of English grammar
Experience of taking minutes of meetings
Experience of working effectively with people from diverse backgrounds and a wide range of agencies
Experience of organising and managing events, meetings and schedules
Recent experience of student pastoral support in an educational setting
Experience of monitoring student attendance and a pro-active approach to maintaining good levels of attendance
Experience of supporting senior managers
Experience of successful project management
Understanding of the principles of protection of personal data
Experience of working in an innovative educational environment
Skills / Abilities Ability to communicate effectively, face-to-face, on the telephone and in writing
Able to take on ‘difficult conversations’ that have to be done, and reach a positive outcome
