Choosing a Childcare CentreThere are a variety of types of childcare to meet differing family needs. A brief description of each type of care is listed at the beginning of each section of this guide. All childcare services must provide a safe and appropriate care and educational environment for children as outlined in the Children & Young Persons (Care and Protection) Act, 1998. Regulations cover areas such as staff qualifications, the ratio of staff to children, physical requirements of building spaces and equipment, health and safety and administrative requirements. Some points to consider in choosing a centre for your child:

Are you welcome to visit your child at any time? Does your child feel welcome? Are family members encouraged to participate in activities? Is information shared between the centre and families? Does the centre's philosophy fit well with your own ideas and

values? Is there a planned program of daily activities? Are you encouraged to talk to staff about the programs offered? Do the activities interest your child? Do you and your child feel comfortable with the centre?

For further advice on choosing the service that best meets your and your child's needs, contact the Australian Children's Education and Care Quality Authority on 1300 422 327 or [email protected]. Website: www.acecqa.gov.au.
