Phonics and Letter Formation Booklet for parents At Brize Norton Primary School we initially teach children sounds following Ruth Miskin’s Read Write Inc scheme. Alongside this we teach children to write using a cursive script from the beginning. This booklet aims to support you in helping your child learn their letter formation in line with the schools policies. The sounds are presented in the order they are taught, with an example of how to form each letter correctly and the rhyme that accompanies the letter, to help your child remember the pattern. We talk about sounds that ‘stretch’ or ‘bounce’ to help the children think about whether a sound is long or short.

At Brize Norton Primary School we initially teach children sounds following Ruth Miskin’s Read Write Inc scheme.

Alongside this we teach children to write using a cursive script from the beginning.

This booklet aims to support you in helping your child learn their letter formation in line with the schools policies.

The sounds are presented in the order they are taught, with an example of how to form each letter correctly and the rhyme that accompanies the letter, to help your child remember the pattern.

We talk about sounds that ‘stretch’ or ‘bounce’ to help the children think about whether a sound is long or short.

s s (stretch)up to the snakes head, slither down the snake.

d d (bounce)up the dinosaurs back, round his bottom, up his long tall neck, down to his feet.

t t (bounce)up the tower, down the tower and across the tower.

i i (bounce)up the insects body, down his body and dot for the head.

n n (stretch)up to Nobby’s head, down Nobby and over his net.

p p (bounce)up to the parrot, down the plait

and around the pirates face. g g (bounce)up to the top of the girl’s head, round her face, down her hair and give her a curl.

o o. (bounce)up to the top of the orange, all around the orange.

c c (bounce)up to the caterpillar’s head, curl around the caterpillar.

k k (bounce)up to the kangaroo’s head, down his body, around his tail and down his leg.

u u (bounce)up the umbrella, down and under, up to the top, down to the puddle.

b b (bounce)up to the top of the boot, down the laces, around the toe and touch the heel

f f (stretch)around the flower, down the stem and around the leaf.

e e (bounce)slice through the egg, over the egg and under the egg.

h h (bounce)up to the horses head, down to his hooves and over his back.

sh sh (stretch) sh, says the horse to the hissing snake

r r (stretch)up to the robots head, down his back, then curl over his arm.

j j (bounce)up to the jack-in-a-box’s head, down his body, curl and dot.

v v (stretch)up to the tip of the vultures wing, down a wing, up a wing.

y y (bounce)up the yak’s horn, down a horn, up a horn, under his chin and round his nose.

w w (bounce)up to the worms tail, down, up, down, up.

th th(stretch) the princess in the tower is rescued by the horse, she says ‘thank you’.

z z (stretch)up to the start of the zip, zig-zag-zig.

ch ch(bounce) the caterpillar’s hairs make the horse sneeze, ‘achoo’.

q q (bounce)up to the top of the queens head, round her head, up past her earrings and down her hair.

x x (bounce)up to the arm, down the arm and leg, up to the other arm, down the arm and leg.
