Powtoon project: Five Themes of Geography

You are going to create a Powtoon that will describe THREE of the 5 Themes of Geography. You may complete this project individually or with a partner (no groups of 3).

You will choose THREE from the following to include in your presentation

** Note that absolute location and relative location are not two different themes; they are both part of location. If you choose the theme of location you need to discuss both absolute location and relative location.

*** Note that physical characteristics and human characteristics are part of the theme of place. They are not individual themes. If you choose the theme of place, you must discuss both physical characteristics and human characteristics.

Your presentation should be a minimum of EIGHT slides long will include the following:

a title slide with your name(s), period, and the title of your project a slide listing the five themes of geography (not just the three in your presentation, list all 5 themes) two slides for each of the themes you are doing. Each slide should give the name of the theme, a

description and 2-4 images. Since you are doing THREE themes this means you will have SIX slides in total for this section. It’s okay to have more than two slides per theme, it is not okay to have less than two.

Background music Transitions

You will be graded on the quality of your presentation including spelling, grammar, accuracy of your descriptions and the appropriateness of your images.

Your presentation must be at least one minute long and no longer than two and a half minutes long.

Please remember to save your work FREQUENTLY! You should save every 3-5 minutes. It’s a quick click and you want to make sure you don’t lose your work! It is especially important to save before you import an image. Sometimes an image won’t load and you may have to reload your page. When you reload your page, anything you did after your last save will be LOST! I can’t stress this enough, hit the save button FREQUENTLY!

1. Create an account on Powtoon. Go to www.powtoon.com and click the “sign up for free” link. Use your PVSD e-mail address.

2. For your password please use my last name (Anestad) as your password. If everyone uses the same password, there’s no risk of forgetting it and not being able to get back in. Your e-mail addresses are not active yet, so you can’t have your password e-mailed to you. So, just use Anestad as your password and we won’t have any issues!

3. After logging in, click on the Powtoon logo on the top left of your screen4. Click on the “start now” button5. Click on “create”6. Choose the “start from scratch” theme.7. You are now ready to create your presentation. See your handout for help on how to use Powtoon.

Have fun! If you’re not sure what something does, try it out! Just be sure to save before you play around with something. That way if you don’t like what happens, you can log out and then be back to how it was before you played around with it. I will do my very best to help you with your project, however, there is one of me and about 24 of you! So, please try to figure things out on your own. Again, if you save often, you won’t risk totally messing up your project. I am confident you can create a great presentation all by yourself!

Using PowtoonHow do I add a slide?

Click on the + button that says “add a slide” located on the left side of your screen.

How do I add a background?Click on “Layouts” in the tool bar all the way to the right. Layouts is the top choice. Choose your layout

and click on it. It will appear on the slide. You can also choose “background” instead of layout.

How do I add text?Click on the button that says “text.” Choose the text style you want. Drag it to the slide. Double click on

the text and you can then change it to what you want it to say.

How do I add images?Click on “images.” Choose “image search.” Type in what you’re looking for. When you find an image

you like, click on “use.” It will appear on your slide. It may be very large, put your cursor on a corner, hold down and you can drag to change the size.

I can’t find an image on Powtoon that I like. How do I get more images?You can add images from the internet. Do a google search for what you would like to find an image for.

Once you have the image you’d like to use, save it to your desktop or document folder. Go back to the image section of Powtoon, choose “upload image.” Find the image from your document folder. Click on it and it will be added to your Powtoon library. Click on the image. Click on “insert image.”

I want to know what my project will look like when it’s presented.Click on the play button located on the left side under the slides. It will play your video from whichever

slide you are on. If you want to watch it from the beginning, click on the first slide.

The length of time for my slide isn’t good. I need to change it.There is a bar under your slide. It will show you how long each text piece or image is shown for. To

change how long the slide shows for, use the + or – at the end of the bar to add or subtract time to your slide.

My images or text are appearing for too short or too long. How do I change at what point in the slide they appear and for how long they are shown?

There is a bar under your slide. You’ll see a T where text is added in and a small box with an image where an image is added in. To change the length of time for the item, click on the T or small box. Blue lines will now appear on the bar showing the start and end for that image or text. You can drag these blue lines to make it last longer or shorter.

How do I name my Powtoon?Towards the top left part of your screen there is a white box that says “untitled Powtoon.” Click on it

and give your presentation a new name.

How do I add transitions?On the lefthand side where your slides are, there is a small image between your slide. Click on it to add

a transition. A box will pop up. Choose the transition you’d like to use. Be sure to add transitions between all of your slides.

How do I add music?Click on “sounds” from the right side. Click on “sound track.” You can choose any of the songs that have

“add” next to it. After clicking “add” you must ALSO click “apply.” If you only choose “add” and forget to “apply” your music will not be added. You know your music has been successfully added when you see wavy lines on the bar under your images.

How do I publish my Powtoon?This is a very important final step. If you don’t do this, I can’t see your presentation.Click on “Export” located to the top of your screenChoose Publish to My PowtoonsIn the category, choose EducationThe privacy is PublicClick “Next”Click “Export Powtoon”

*** When your project is finished, you need to copy and paste the link of your presentation into a Google Doc that you will share with me. Log into your Google Drive, go to Google Docs, copy and paste the link into the doc and then share it with me. Save it using your last name and the word geography (ex: Smith geography or Jones geography) ***
