Chapter 5 – Newton’s Laws of Motion HW

1. A 215-N box is placed on a frictionless inclined plane that makes a 35.0° angle with the horizontal.

(a) Find the component of force parallel to the plane’s surface.(b) How fast would the box accelerate down the ramp?

2. Joe wishes to hang a sign weighing 7.50 x 102 N so that cable A, attached to the store, makes a 30.0° angle. Cable B is horizontal and attached to an adjoining building. What is the tension in each cable?

3. A 45-N force is exerted in the upward direction on a 2.0 kg briefcase. What is the acceleration of the briefcase?

4. A 0.53-kg billiard ball initially at rest is given a speed of 12 m/s during a time interval of 4.0 ms. What average force acted on the ball during this time?

5. Linus drags his 2.4 kg blanket along the ground with a force that pulls at an angle of 25° above the horizontal. (a) How much does the ground push up on the blanket and (b) what is the acceleration of the blanket?

6. (BONUS) A shopper pushes a 7.5-kg shopping cart up a 13° incline. Find the magnitude of the horizontal force, F, needed to give the cart an acceleration of 1.41 m/s2. Note that F points horizontal and not along the plane of the ramp.
