Things you need to know:

ISO(International Organization of Standardization): Standard numbers that indicate film speed. The standard ISO setting for digital cameras is 100.

F-Stop: The iris opens and closes at specific settings called f-stops, which work in conjunction with the camera’s shutter to allow the correct amount of light to create a proper exposure.

Camera Vocabulary:

Aperature Ring: Manual lens on a camera which controls the size of the aperature.

Aperature: The size of the lens opening.Film Speed: The rate at which film reacts with light.

Focal Length: Refers to the distance that light travels between entering the lens and arriving to the film

Fixed Lens: Lens that is permanently attached to a camera.

Focal Point: Point where all rays of light from a single object merge, which causes the object to be in focus.

Focusing Ring: The ring on a lens that moves back and forth that help focus the image.

Point of Interest: The object in a photo that attracts the most attention.

Shutter: device that uncovers a single frame of film for a specified time so that light may pass and produce an image.

Shutter Release: Button that releases the shutter on a camera.

Shutter Speed: The time that the shutter remains open. Ex. 1/25

View Finder: The camera’s window.

Overlay: Filter that can be layered over a digital image.

Visual Elements: All the basic components of an image.

Visual Harmony: Any visual repeating element in a photo.

Zoom Lens: Any lens of a variable focal length.

Contrast: The range of values in a photograph or subject.

Dynamic Balance: A composition where the visual elements are arranged to produce a sense of harmony and motion.

Photoshop Tools:
