GENERAL BUSINESS

1. Warren Crozier’s mother has passed away after a lengthy illness. The funeral is Wednesday 11th March. Members are encouraged to attend. Secretary to contact Warren with a view to a donation to his chosen charity as flowers are not requested.

2. Supper Roster

This is gradually filling up. Some concern that only 1 person may be providing April supper. Heidi Jatis volunteered to assist.

3. LOC Orchid Spectaculara. Refreshments

This is taking place across Mother’s Day weekend. Progress is steadily being made with regard to sourcing suitable consumables. Thanks to Lisa and Maria for helping in this area; also, possible helpThe next meeting will see a roster available for people to sign up to help with the refreshments stall. It is very important that there are sufficient volunteers to man the stall as it does raise money for the club. Please consider signing up for a shift. Volunteers will receive free entry to the Spectacular.

b. DisplayThe Orchid Spectacular has provision for clubs to enter a display. This year’s theme is “Celebrating Mothers”. In previous years, a small committee has organised the display. Thanks to Kerryn Steward for offering to oversee the display again. She will need help. Just as importantly, she will need orchid plants to decorate the display. Any orchids that are of too poor quality to enter for the show itself can be put into the display. Please bring some along.

5. AOBa. A request that information be available for club members with regard to use of

pesticides and fungicides. Some discussion as to whether this was appropriate for the bulletin. Possibility of a fact sheet to be produced.

b. Don’t forget to start preaparing your plants for the Orchid Spectacular – staking and training ‘spikes’, fertilising, ‘weeding’ etc.

Popular vote. Mark Ryan’s plant C. cernuaLucky door Rob Chapman [a beautiful large Dendrobium Maid of Gloucester donated

Thanks are due to Lisa Fong and Maria Tchia for providing another splendid supper.

Orchid Focus1. Due to the lateness of the evening, there was a very short talk about all of the orchids

displayed, including the popular vote winner and several runner up plants.

a motion was put to confirm this intent.

Moved Rob Chapman Seconded Wally Grimm

The Constitution also stipulates that a Librarian be appointed. Wally Grimm nominated himselfNomination Wally Grimm Moved Anthony Fuller Seconded Heidi Jatis

2. Treasurer At the AGM, no nominations were received for the position of Treasurer. NOS cannot continue without a Treasurer. There was much discussion about what exactly was required to carry out the job effectively. At present, documentation regarding the club’s finances is still with the outgoing treasurer while matters are finalised, so no real progress could be made as to the time commitment required. Given the necessity of making an appointment, Rob Chapman nominated himself and was voted in unanimously by the committee. Nomination Rob Chapman Moved Marion Davey Seconded Anthony Fuller The new Treasurer then requested that steps be taken as a matter of urgency to obtain all the necessary documentation, including access to the bank account so that bills can be paid. Secretary to email Wendy .New signatories are also required for the cheque account. According to the constitution, the treasurer does not have to be named as a signatory. A proposal was made that 4 people be listed as signatories, rather than specific positions. The people to be listed are: [AF, RC, MD, HJ]. Those who have not done so, will need to present at an ANZ branch with 100 points of identity.Moved Lynne Strathie Seconded Wally GrimmConcern was raised that current legislation may require that members undergo a Criminal History Check. Further investigation needed.Electronic access to the Constitution is also needed. Still to be finalised.

3. Orchid Spectacular More information is needed with regard to 2014 accounts so that purchase prices for consumables can be investigated, as well as quantities. For example, could scones be sourced more cheaply from supermarkets? WG is willing to approach Woolworths.WG has also offered the loan of a fridge for the weekend for perishables.

4. Outing A visit to Majestic orchids has been suggested. WG offered to see what he could do.

5. Social/workshop .It was felt that either an afternoon workshop or evening social should be organised as soon as possible. MD to investigate.

2.If you have flowering orchid plants that are not quite good enough to enter [e.g.

This tiny orchid is called Schoenorchis fragrans.but is already of flowering size. The entire plant is about 3cm long.It was supplied on a piece of extremely unattractive wood and is not growing particularly well. It will be moved to a mount that better suits its fine roots.

Miltonia spectabilis. This plant was originally owned by Warren Crozier. It is not a robust grower, and frequently appears to be about to die. However, it continues to survive and every now and then produces a single, spectacular flower.

GONGORAS FLOWERING IN MARCH

11 | P a g e

Gongora galeata. This orchid is not said to grow successfully in the Top End. It is too hot for it. This particular plant has certainly struggled for several years but seems to have now accepted life in Darwin. This is its 5th inflorescence this year.

Gongora scaphephorus. This orchid is much happier in Darwin conditions. The flowers are a very attractive pink colour, unlike many of the more yellow/brown Gongora flowers commonly grown in the Darwin region.
