In Memoriam

It is with sadness we note the recent passing of Past President and Life Member Diane Osborne. Diane was a hard working Committee Member, a loyal supporter of all types of dance and was well known for her successful fundraising efforts prior to moving North with her family

several years ago. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

ADJUDICATORS 2017

BALLET

Daniel Cooper

Daniel trained at The New Zealand School of Dance and graduated in 2001. After graduating he understudied and danced in Douglas Wright’s 2002 season of ‘Inland’ then went on to dance with Black Grace Dance Company for the next four years. During his time with Black Grace, Daniel performed at festivals and in theatres around the world including the prestigious Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival and a month season off Broadway. He was honoured to create two works on the company, ‘Man’ in 2005 and in 2006 was commissioned by Black Grace to make a new work for their triple bill 'Black Grace and Friends' named ‘Behind i’s’.

Since then, Daniel has had the opportunity to choreograph for television (Stars in their Eyes, Montana Sunday Theatre "Life's a Riot") and was Assistant Choreographer for the much loved World Of WearableArt show. Daniel has also had the privilege of being Rehearsal Director/Choreographic Assistant for two of New Zealand's leading contemporary dance companies, Okareka Dance Company and Atamira Dance Company. Most recently, Daniel has been on stage performing nationally and internationally with Atamira Dance Company and Douglas Wright Dance Company as well as continuing his Choreographic Assistant work on Atamira projects Moko by Moss Patterson and Mitimiti by Jack Gray.

In the field of education, Daniel has had the pleasure of teaching young people of all ages and levels nationwide as Dance Educator for the Royal New Zealand Ballet, facilitating events such as workshops in schools, masterclasses, ballet for boys and theatre events for the public as well as being and adjudicator for dance competitions regionally. At a pre-professional level, Daniel worked with Okareka Dance Company to initiate their annual Summer School. He has also enjoyed teaching professional level classes for IndependANCE, Atatmira Dance Company, Raising the Barre, Okareka Dance Company, WOW and Unitec.

JAZZ

Alissa Bell

Alissa Bell (nee Yee) was introduced to the magical world of dancing doing ballet at 5 years with Sharon Statham and jazz at 6 years with Keri Edley. Alissa started teaching and doing competition choreography work at the tender age of 14. She was one of the principal members of the professional dance troupe “Tiptoze” for most of her dancing years. Alissa assisted with the development of JDNZ syllabus and does the medal tests for hip hop. She formed the dance troupe “Girls Night Out” to offer the dancers opportunities to perform and extend their dancing experience. Alissa was also an aerobics instructor and personal trainer at many Auckland gyms. In 2008, Alissa officially retired on her 20th year of teaching as motherhood and living in Waiuku with her wonderful husband and 3 children is more than time consuming. Even though she is not actively teaching, she still does have a lot to do with the dancing world and continues to teach on a casual basis.

Dancing is a wonderful, expressive art and is to be enjoyed by all.... both as a dancer and spectator! Love what you do and dance from the heart!  I wish you all a fantastic weekend of dancing!

Alissa
