Wednesday Lesson 5 - Parts of a ProcedurePhase Time ActivityStarter 5 Formalities

Introduction 20 Students will need their books for this lesson. First off we will recap what we learnt yesterday. I will ask what the definition of a procedure is. They will have to write this down. Then I will give out the handout

Handout on what makes a good procedure: Framework Purpose Materials Procedural steps Conclusion Wording – verbs

Using two of the examples from the activity yesterday, I will go through these headings and break down how to make these effective procedures using this framework.

Development 20 How to Make a Chocolate Cake activity. Students will get the recipe in nonlinear, cut up strips. In pairs they will have to put the recipe in thecorrect order. We will then discuss what everyone had for answers.

This time using picture only instructions, I will give the students Ikea Instructions for the ‘Billy’. They will have to work out what order they go in.

Hand out Planning a Procedure worksheet and go through it with the class

Development 25 Assign days of presentation for students and get them to start thinking of ideas.

Presentations commence Wednesday June 22nd and finish Friday June 24th. 4 on the Wednesday, 9 in the Thursday double and 5 on the Friday.

Help students generate ideas about what they can “teach” the class through their presentation.`

Starter 5 Formalities

Introduction 10 Ask students about what they remember about word choice. If needed, go through technical language PowerPoint again, with particular focus on verbs and adjectives.

Development 25 I will play Verb/Adverb/Adjective Bingo with the class. I will read out 2 recipes. They can call bingo when they have found either 10 verbs, 5 adjectives or 1 adverb. They will also have to provide examples.

Prizes will be given.

Introduction 20 Explain oral presentation skills using PowerPoint of the oral presentation checklist. They will need their exercise books.

Then watch How To Sound Smart in Your TEDx Talk. Discuss as a class if he ticks off anything from our checklist.

Development 20 Play the How to Make Toast video. This will get them to understand why they are doing this visually and how important it is to map out things.

If there is spare time, I will go through the marking criteria.
