CHURCH RUMMAGE SALE

Perfect Love Casts Out Fear

Hard to believe that we are coming up on the Lenten season already. This year it comes a little later and still it seems to sneak up on us, Ash Wednesday is on March 6 th. So even before we have put our Christmas decorations away we are preparing for our midweek services.

This year the theme of our reflections during Lent is “Perfect Love Casts Out Fear”. I will resist the temptation to reflect on that theme right here but instead invite you to come and participate in our Wednesday evening services. I know this about the Lenten season there are always surprises when God finds us gathered around the word. There are always new areas of

growth and new insights that reshape us and transform us. We should expect nothing less and always be wanting more. So come and join both the fellowship around the table (soup supper), and around those gathered for worship.

As in years past we will be gathering for a soup supper followed by a time of worship. If you have never participated in the Wednesday evening services during Lenten this may be the year you might want to come and attend one. It is actually pretty fun, even though we are in Lent. Fun because most everyone is coming from a long day at work or school and we are all a bit tired and hungry. This gives our meal a kind of friendly home feeling only with a lot of people together. Something I have observed for years is that families who don’t normally get together for supper unless it’s a holiday are suddenly enjoying conversations and sharing their day. That is pretty awesome! Grandparents and grandkids together and enjoying the daily stories and struggles.

I WISH WE COULD ALL JUST HOP

A PLANE TO FLORIDA, BUT…

Page 2: Kenwood  · Web viewI know this about the Lenten season there are always surprises when God finds us gathered around the word. There are always new areas of growth and new insights

For sure, we don’t want to let the winter blues get the best of us, and midweek worship is the perfect antidote for SAD (Seasonal Effective Disorder). I wish we could all just hop a plane to Florida, but… first off TSA officials may not be available to check our bags, and who knows

if the weather might be crazy. Right? So just come and get all the son…light you need right here in your very own church! Too simple, I know, but it is a rather intriguing scenario. Church as healing! I like the sound of that and it actually offers some hope. Well, I think so anyway. My point is that I believe love can be found here and that “Love” does keep fear from bringing us down. More about that later. Right

now I just want you to know that we are here. Lenten starts very soon and you are invited. February 14th Valentine’s Day, celebrate love with those around you, especially those special someones in your life. March, see you at Kenwood Lutheran and let’s celebrate Lent, and the love of God in Jesus.

Love in Christ,

Pastor Jeffrey Holter

Greetings –

The annual meeting was last week. Actually I am writing this before the annual meeting. (So fingers crossed, it went well.) With God’s Blessing, we start a new year here at Kenwood Lutheran.

Lent starts next month already. There are also plans for a pancake camp scholarship dinner and a fundraiser dinner for the Pre-School in the works. More information will be coming soon.

At the October Council meeting we discussed having more combined services. It was decided that we would try something new this year. In 2019, we will have a combined service when there is a fifth Sunday in a month. This only happens 4 times in 2019. The first one will be on March 31. We are also looking at having something special like a potluck on those Sundays.

We are also looking at cutting back on some of the printing of this newsletter. Turns out that Theresa, our good a faithful secretary, spends over 5 hours assembling this paper newsletter – copying, stapling and adding mailing labels. In addition, we go through a lot of paper. We are looking at sending the newsletter by e-mail. Many of us receive the newsletter by email now. There would also be a few hard copies available at church if you would like a paper copy. For those who do not have email, a paper copy would still be mailed. Please let me, the church office, or another Council Member know what you think. We will discuss this at the February Council Meeting. To be clear, if you need or want a paper copy – you can still get one.

I look forward to working with you this year. Only God knows what is in store for us in 2019. May the Lord guide us through 2019.

Blessings,

Joy Michalicek, Council President

It’s Party Time!!!

This month we are celebrating our 75th Anniversary as Kenwood Lutheran Church. This includes celebrating Messiah Lutheran and Lutheran Campus Ministry. The itinerary is now finalized.

Ice Cream Social, Carnival, Silent Auction and Live MusicSaturday, August 11, 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.Come and join us for a carnival and ice cream social. There will also be history displays, a

silent auction and live music. Proceeds will be split between the Raise the Roof Fund and the CHUM Food Shelf.

Celebration Worship and Congregational BrunchSunday, August 12, 9:45 a.m.There will be a combined service followed by a congregational brunch downstairs. Pastorsfrom years past will also be helping with the service. All are welcome.

Here’s how you can help:Volunteers to help with scooping ice cream, carnival helpers, ticket helpers and items for theauction are still needed. There is a sign-up sheet in the Messiah Room. Please call the

churchoffice (218-724-9291) or Sue Muehlberger (218-720-3196) with questions. There aremeetings every Sunday during the B.I.G. Hour in the Fireside Room. All are welcome.

So what else is going on at Kenwood? Here is a sampling:

The Annual Steak Fry is August 23. Please come and enjoy a wonderful steak and great fellowship. Tickets will be on sale soon.

God’s Work Our Hands Sunday is September 9th. We are putting together a welcome kit for LSS Center for Changing Lives. There will be a list of items and collection area in the Messiah Room. There will also be a neighborhood clean-up that day.

Rally Sunday is coming up in September as well. Please stay tuned. The Education Committee is finalizing their plans.

Memorial Garden – At Council we learned that there was a snafu with the Memorial Garden paperwork from when the land around the church was sold. Billman’s was listed as the tax holder. It was just an error. The error has been corrected, and all is well. So you are aware, Billman’s hasn’t been paying taxes on the Memorial Garden either. Just letting you all know it is corrected.

Blessings,Joy MichalicekCouncil President

HungerSupport for hunger issues will be highlighted in February and March.

In February, be watching for a special offering envelope for ELCA World Hunger. Please consider an offering of a least $1 for each day in February, or $28. God richly provides for daily bread. Yet many of our sisters and brothers still go hungry.

In March, our congregation we will support CHUM Food Shelf during Food Share Month. More details next month.

For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me. Matthew 25:35 If you have not yet picked up your

offering envelopes, they are on the table by the bulletin board in the Messiah Room.
