Sticky Note Fly Swat Activity

Write sight words on individual sticky notes. Set them out on a flat surface and give the student a fly

swatter. Say one of the sight words on the sticky and have the student swat the word.

Supplies: A fly swatter, pen, and sticky notes

Page 6: abigailwillcox.weebly.comabigailwillcox.weebly.com/.../5/2/2/2/52220853/prof_dev_sight_words… · Web viewHave the student tape the end of the yarn to the sight word on one side,

5

String the Sight Words

Post sticky notes to the floor in two lines facing each other. Each sight word should be written twice,

one on each side. Be sure to mix the order of the sight words so they are not all directly across from

each other. Give the student a ball of yarn or twine. Call out one of the sight words. Have the student

tape the end of the yarn to the sight word on one side, pull the yarn across to the sight word on the

opposite side, have the student cut and tape the yarn to the other sight word. Continue this process

until all of the sight words are connected.

Supplies: Sticky notes, a pen, scissors, yarn/ twine, and tape

Sight Words Dominoes

With a sharpie, draw a line down the middle of a blank notecard. On the top and bottom, write two

separate sight words. Be sure to create cards that will match. For example, the bottom of one card

may say “could” and the top of another card should also say “could.” Once the cards are created,

have your student match each end together.

Supplies: Blank notecards and a marker

7

Uncover the Sight Word

Write sight words upside down on paper cups. Insert a tiny object (possibly a rubber ball) that can

move easily under one of the cups. Show the student which cup you are putting the object under, re-

order the cups around on a flat surface, and have the student say the sight word to choose where

they believe the object is. Be sure to change the cup with the object underneath of it so the student

has the ability to practice different sight words.

Supplies: Paper cups, a marker, and a prize object/ tiny ball

Say It, Build It, Write It

On a piece of paper with “Say It” at the top, “Build It” in the middle, and “Write it” at the bottom have

the student complete the different activities. Under the “Say It” header, put a sticky note with the sight

word you want the student to practice. Have the student use foam, plastic, or magnetic letters to spell

the word under the “Build It” header. Finally, use another sticky note under the “Write It” header so

the student can write the sight word on their own.

Supplies: “Say It, Build It, Write It” Sheet, sticky notes, a pencil, and letters (foam, plastic, or

magnetic)

Sand Spelling

Pour sand into a plastic pencil holder or Ziploc bag. Give the student a pencil or have them use their

finger to write a sight word. You can write the sight word on a sticky note and place it in front of the

student for reference. As the student progresses, simply say the word and have the student write it in

the sand.

Supplies: Sand, a pencil, sticky notes, and a plastic pencil case or Ziploc bag

10

Cover the Sight Word

Write a number of sight words both individually on sticky notes and on a white board. Have the

student cover the sight word on the white board with the sticky note. To make it a little more

challenging, do not match the same number of white board sight words to the sticky notes.

Supplies: Sticky notes, a marker, white board, white board markers, and a white board eraser

11

Magnify the Sight Word

Either using a specific worksheet or one created on your own, have students find and write different

sight words. If creating your own, it may be a good option to use a white board to write sight words in

a tiny font. Each time the student finds a tiny sight word using the magnifying glass, have them recite

and write the word.

Supplies: Magnifying glass and either a worksheet or white board (with a white board marker and

eraser)

Color by Sight Word

Using any sort of clear, colorless image create a text box in various points in that image to write in

sight words. Then, create a key that matches the sight words with a specific color. Have the student

use markers, colored pencils, or crayons to color in the image based on the key. It would also be a

good idea to have the student say the sight word out loud while they are coloring it in.

Supplies: Color by sight word image/ worksheet and drawling supplies (markers, colored pencils, or

crayons).

Sight Word Stick Puzzle

You can either buy or paint popsicle sticks so that they are specific colors. With a marker, put two

popsicles of the same color together and write a sight word on both of them. When the two popsicle

sticks pull apart, the word should split in half horizontally. Mix all of the sight word popsicle sticks

together and have the student put the sticks together and say the sight word aloud. To make the

activity more challenging, do not color code the popsicle sticks.

Supplies: (colored) popsicle sticks and a marker

14

Sight Word Hunt

Put sight words on colored stickies throughout the room. Each time the student finds a sight word

they can call it out. Consider having the student conduct the hunt with the lights off, using a flashlight.

Now, when the student finds the word they can illuminate it on the wall, making it more enjoyable and

engaging.

Supplies: Sticky notes, a pen, and possibly a flashlight

Sight Word Twister: Chalk Edition

On a paved surface, use red, blue, green, and yellow chalk to make a twister board. All of the usual

Twister circles should be sight words. Create a color and hand/ foot wheel or use a Twister wheel to

tell students which hand/ foot is going on a certain color. When students place their hand or foot on a

sight word they should call it out.

Supplies: Red, blue, green, and yellow chalk and a Twister (or handmade) wheel
